The Bauchi State Government has dismissed claims suggesting that Governor Bala Mohammed is considering defecting to the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP.

The clarification followed a statement attributed to the PRP Publicity Secretary in the state,  Hon Wada Abdullahi, alleging that the governor was not welcome to join the party. The government described the remark as “false” and “a product of imagination.”

According to Abdullahi, the party’s attention was drawn to circulating reports suggesting that Governor Mohammed might seek refuge in the PRP following the “alleged disintegration” of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nationwide.

However, the PRP declared that even if the rumours were true, the governor would not be welcomed.

Abdullahi stated that Governor Mohammed’s leadership record in Bauchi State falls short of the standards the party upholds.

But responding to PRP in a statement issued on Wednesday, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mukhtar Gidado, said Governor Mohammed has never contemplated leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), adding that no move—direct or indirect—had been made toward joining the PRP.

According to Gidado, Governor Mohammed remains a key figure in efforts to stabilise the PDP and strengthen internal democracy within the party.

He noted that the governor’s political strength has been demonstrated in his electoral victories over the PRP in previous contests.

The government maintained that Bauchi has continued to record progress under Mohammed’s administration, citing gains in empowerment, infrastructure, rural development, urban renewal and tourism.

It also criticised the PRP’s stance, saying the party had failed to appreciate ongoing reforms, including the restructuring of traditional institutions and transfer of certain powers aimed at improving governance.

Gidado urged residents to remain watchful and not be swayed by “habitual criticism” from political actors seeking relevance.

He added that although the governor, like every Nigerian, has the constitutional right to freely associate and determine his political future, any such decision would not be influenced by “falsehood or malicious propaganda.”

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, on Wednesday, warned that Nigeria faces one of its gravest internal threats as mutual trust between major religious groups continues to deteriorate at a disturbing pace.

Akume, who spoke at the second triennial meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) in Abuja, said recent tensions had “almost ebbed into religious conflict” in the last few months.

According to him, Nigeria is navigating “one of its most delicate periods,” driven by heightened political rhetoric, deepening insecurity and widening suspicion among communities.

The SGF cautioned that unless urgent efforts are made to mend fractured relationships, the nation could slip into a crisis that may be exploited by criminal and extremist networks.

Citing violent incidents in Benue, Kwara, Kebbi, Niger and Zamfara states, Akume said the rising insecurity had amplified public fear. But he warned against the temptation to frame the violence in religious terms.

He said: “Truth be told, this is a critical time in our nation’s history. From previous incidents in Yelewata in Benue, to recent ones in Eruku in Kwara State, to others that occurred in different parts of Kebbi, Niger and Zamfara States, the nation has painfully endured.

“However, the most worrisome part, which we expect NIREC to address, is the erosion of mutual trust among adherents of different faiths, as reflected in views expressed and the tone of such rhetoric.”

Akume added that the task before religious leaders is not to trade blame but to restore the nation’s fragile unity.

“The point is not to engage in a scorecard of pain, but to underscore that violence in Nigeria is not monolithic. Both major faith groups bleed when any Nigerian is killed,” he said.

His comments come amid growing debate, especially in the U.S. Congress, over allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria, following a recent fact-finding mission by American lawmakers.

The Federal Government has repeatedly rejected the claims, maintaining that while insecurity persists, no religious group is targeted.

Akume conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s appreciation for NIREC’s peacebuilding efforts and reaffirmed the administration’s support for non-kinetic security interventions.

He also disclosed that the President had set up a U.S., Nigeria Joint Working Group on Security, with NIREC expected to play a significant role.

On Nigeria’s recent designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the U.S., the SGF said stronger domestic engagement was required to correct false narratives and reinforce the nation’s commitment to religious freedom.

Co-chair of NIREC and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, called for sincere dialogue, saying no amount of force could guarantee lasting peace without honesty and mutual respect.

Challenging religious leaders to self-reflect, the Sultan said: “We sit down and say so many good things to one another, knowing God owns everything. Yet, when we go out, away from our comfort zone, we begin to say negative things about one another. Are we really honest with ourselves?

“God doesn’t make mistakes. He created us into tribes and nations so we could understand one another… When we close the session, we should speak honestly and sincerely, without mixing words. We must be very blunt.”

He stressed that interfaith cooperation does not require compromising core beliefs.

“You won’t tell me to abandon my faith because of NIREC. I won’t change it, no matter what. And I would never try to change your faith as a Christian, never,” he declared.

Meanwhile, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, commended the Tinubu administration’s steps to improve security, noting that religious institutions remain indispensable in stabilising the country.

He said faith-based organisations possess the moral authority and community reach needed to rebuild trust.

“Faith-based organisations hold immense potential for strengthening security and sustaining peace. Because of their deep community roots, moral authority and trusted presence, they are natural bridges to the hearts and minds of citizens,” Okoh said.

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has faulted the claims by “Some uninformed minds” that President Bola Tinubu was behind the myriad of crisis currently rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying that Governor Seyi Makinde and a few others within the opposition party should be held responsible “as a result of their naivety, pride and insincerity”.

The PDP, which once dominated the political space in the country, is now becoming a shadow of itself as it continues to lose more members, including serving governors and lawmakers at both federal and state levels, to other political parties, especially the APC.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, Oyo APC regretted that the PDP failed Nigerians while in power for 16 years at the federal level and now that it was expected to be the major opposition platform in the country.

“As democrats, we are worried at the turn of events in the PDP since the umbrella party was dislodged from power at the centre in 2015, as it became evident that the only thing which united members of the party was the national cake.

“Things fell apart within the PDP immediately after the 2015 presidential election was decided in favour of the newly registered APC, and up till now, the centre could not hold as the former dominant party now faces imminent collapse and extinction.

“Meanwhile, political pundits and discerning minds who watched while the PDP decimated the socio-political and economic structures of the country between 1999 and 2015 would attribute the present travails of the umbrella party to the law of retribution.

“A particular leader of this same party boasted that they would be in power for at least 50 years, as this marked the height of power intoxication.

“Shortly after, power and money, which kept them going, disappeared, and minor crises were allowed to fester until the time of the 2023 general elections, when the worst happened.

“Rather than look inward for solutions, supposed elders and leaders within the PDP left everything to chance and paved the way for the likes of Gov. Makinde to take over the affairs of their party.

“Because he lacked capacity, experience and other traits required to lead a national party, Governor Makinde emerged as the final nemesis which consumed the PDP, as he is now the only governor belonging to the umbrella party in the whole of Southern Nigeria, with only three or four left in the North.

“We recall that Senator Bola Tinubu and other victims of the do-or-die politics of the Obasanjo era sacrificed a lot to keep the opposition movement afloat until 2015, and the same set of people cannot be blamed for the incompetence on the part of those in the opposition today.

“As a matter of fact, Gov. Makinde cannot deliver the PDP from its current comatose condition. If virtually all his governor colleagues can leave the party for him, questions should be asked about his mission and vision for the PDP, while President Tinubu should be allowed to focus on his job as the president of the country.” APC stated.

The push gained significant momentum at a major conference in Algiers recently, where policymakers convened to translate principle into action.

The meeting, focused on having colonial-era crimes “recognized, criminalized and addressed through reparations,” directly advances a resolution passed by the African Union (AU) earlier this year.

That resolution calls for justice and reparations for victims of colonialism, building on a landmark proposal at the AU’s February summit to formally define colonization as a crime against humanity and develop a unified continental position.

Nigeria, a regional powerhouse, is taking a leading role in the burgeoning campaign. The push was foreshadowed in September when Nigerian Senator Prince Ned Nwoko sent an official claim to the British government demanding $5 trillion in reparations for the damages of colonialism.

While this was a national initiative, it set a powerful precedent and figure for the broader continental discussion.

The British government has consistently rejected such claims. Officials in London have previously labeled demands for colonial reparations as “astonishingly hypocritical,” maintaining that the UK is proud of its modern partnership with African nations and refuses to engage with allegations of historical crimes in a legal or reparative framework.

However, the African initiative is gaining traction in the court of global public opinion. A recently released documentary, “From Slavery to Bond,” has renewed scrutiny on the British Empire’s legacy.

The film investigates how colonial policies on resource extraction, arbitrary borders, and historical artifacts offset laid a “solid ground for modern problems and crises” across the continent, lending academic and moral weight to the reparations argument.

The Algiers conference represents a critical step in a meticulously planned framework. Analysts suggest a joint AU claim would carry far greater geopolitical and legal heft than individual national efforts, posing a significant diplomatic challenge to the UK.

The next phase is expected to involve consolidating a common historical assessment, finalizing a legal strategy, and determining the structure and scope of the reparations demand.

While the path to any monetary payment remains long and fraught, the collective move marks a pivotal shift.

A group in Ogun State, Tinubu Mandate Support Group, has urged the State governor, Dapo Abiodun, to contest for the position of the Ogun East Senatorial District after the expiration of his second term in office in 2027.

The group led by a former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Rev Sola Salau, made the call during a solidarity visit to the governor at his office in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Tuesday.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the visit, Salau explained that the group decided to take the call  to the Governor’s  doorstep, in order for him to realize how serious the people of Ogun East were rooting for him.

He disclosed that though he defected from the PDP to the APC in less than three months ago, he has embarked on massive mobilization to rally support across Ogun East for the Governor  come 2027.

Salau stated further that the group has been working with the Arewa and Ndi’Igbo Communities in the state to ensure the success of the senatorial journey of the governor.

He said though the governor is yet to accede to the call to contest for the Senate, the group will continue to lobby and spur him into action, stressing that Governor Abiodun has not only delivered on his electoral promises to the people of the state, but has further opened up Ogun East to foreign investment, hence the need to continue the delivery of good governance as a senator.

He added that the group is equally mobilizing for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the second term, declaring that the group would soon embark on a mobilization tour to market the president to all the nooks of Ogun.

Salau, however, disclosed that his group will formally launch “Dapo Abiodun for Senate 2027” support  group on December 17, 2025 in Isara-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

Also speaking, the Coordinator of Arewa APC Community in Ogun State, Shuaibu Ghanga, expressed the readiness of the Arewa people in Ogun State to mobilize actual voters for the re-election of President Tinubu.

He added that the community will also continue to rally support for Governor Abiodun to contest for the Senate in 2027.

President Bola Tinubu has urged All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in Osun State to unite and embrace consensus ahead of the party’s primary scheduled for Saturday.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the President met with the aspirants at the State House, Abuja, to foster harmony before the contest.

Those in attendance included former Deputy Governor Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), Babatunde Oralusi, Mulikat Abiola Jimoh, and Munirudeen Oyebamiji.

Also present were the APC National Chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Governor Hope Uzodimma; and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.

Tinubu commended the aspirants for their contributions to the party and appealed for cooperation to avoid a repeat of the divisions that affected the APC during the last Osun election. He urged them to rally behind the party’s consensus candidate for the forthcoming poll.

“You all have a duty and obligation to the party by ensuring the candidate of our party wins the next election in Osun State.

“You must strengthen the bonds of unity, party supremacy, and collective responsibility.

“I have absolute confidence in your ability to deliver victory to our party in Osun State. You have my support and that of the national leadership of the APC to win the coming election,” he said.

At the end of the meeting, the aspirants and APC leaders issued a joint declaration pledging unity and support for the consensus candidate.

President Bola Tinubu has expressed strong displeasure over the growing backlog of debt, estimated at about ₦1.5 billion, owed to federal contractors.

In response, the President has established a high-level committee to address the bottlenecks and secure funds for repayment.

The President’s anger over the outstanding payments was disclosed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, during a briefing with State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by the President at the Council Chambers, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Onanuga revealed that the President was deeply upset upon learning that approximately 2,000 contractors have yet to be paid.

“He made it very, very clear that he is not happy and wants a one-stop solution,” Onanuga said. “A key highlight of the FEC meeting is that the President expressed grave displeasure that contractors are being owed money.

“The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement informed the President that about 2,000 contractors are owed, and this made him very, very upset.

“So, the ministers will look into the problem to find a real solution and identify the funds needed to pay the contractors.”

The presidential aide explained that the committee includes the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Minister of Works, Dave Umahi; Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa; Minister of Housing, Ahmed Dangiwa; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola; as well as the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Kurfi; and the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji.

“All members are to sit down, develop a plan as a committee, and present their solution to the President, particularly on how to allocate funds to pay contractors,” he stated.

Onanuga added that the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, had briefed the Council on the magnitude of the legacy debts, prompting the President’s directive.

“The mandate is to find the money and fix the problem of paying contractors. We need to look at what has been causing this situation. Why are contractors still owed even when revenue is reportedly increasing? What is driving this problem?

“That is why the President has set up a multi-ministerial committee. He even said that as a sovereign nation, we can borrow to pay these contractors. By the time the committee meets him today, we expect a solution,” Onanuga explained.

Contractors have for months decried delays in the payment of arrears for jobs completed since last year. In early September, the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria protested at the Finance Ministry, claiming that more than ₦4 trillion was outstanding for certified 2024 capital projects, a figure also presented during their demonstration at the National Assembly.

The Works Ministry had earlier acknowledged a significant backlog and launched a verification exercise in January 2024 aimed at clearing about ₦1.5 trillion owed on federal highway contracts.

In addition to the arrears, budget execution has been further complicated by carry-over projects, with capital components from the 2024 budget spilling deep into 2025.

President Bola Tinubu has ordered that ministers and senior officials must obtain presidential approval before requesting police escorts for official duties.

The directive was given at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

This is aimed at preventing security lapses caused by the uncoordinated redeployment of officers.

Tinubu instructed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Minister of Police Affairs to ensure compliance, stressing that officials should contact the IGP and secure his clearance through the presidency if they require special security arrangements.

“I have told the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), and I hope the Minister of police affairs is here to implement the directive.

“If you have any problem with security, because of the nature of your assignment, please, contact the IGP and get my clearance,’’ the President said.

President Tinubu also directed the Minister of Interior, in collaboration with the IGP and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to address security gaps created when officers are deployed on special duties, ensuring communities and officials remain protected.

• He also tasked the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) with reviewing the country’s security framework and implementing necessary reforms.
• The President further stressed the importance of equipping civil defence personnel and forest guards to strengthen community protection.

Beyond security, he urged the Vice President and the National Economic Council to revive grazing reserves and develop ranches, turning salvageable lands into livestock hubs to reduce herder–farmer conflicts and boost economic development, with states leading land management.

Backstory 

The directive builds on earlier moves by President Tinubu to strengthen national policing.

In November, he ordered the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) nationwide, redeploying them to core policing duties. VIPs requiring security protection are now mandated to request armed escorts from the NSCDC, a shift expected to free thousands of police officers for frontline duties.

• The presidency said the move addresses longstanding personnel imbalances that left rural and semi-urban communities under-policed.
• Tinubu highlighted the declining police visibility in remote areas and stressed the need for robust, community-level policing as the country grapples with banditry, kidnapping, communal clashes, and other violent crimes.

To support this goal, the President approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel, one of the largest expansions of the Nigeria Police Force in recent years. The drive will include upgraded training facilities, with federal and state governments collaborating to ensure modern, well-equipped academies capable of producing highly trained officers.
