Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), yesterday, declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in Sunday’s attempted coup in the Republic of Benin, saying his timely role prevented a major security threat to Nigeria. Chairman of NGF and governor of Kwara State, Alhaji AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, disclosed this while reacting to the development.

That was as Senate granted Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to Benin, endorsing what the lawmakers described as a decisive and constitutionally grounded move to prevent the collapse of democratic order in the neighbouring country.

At the same time, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) applauded Nigeria’s role in quashing the coup, saying it must be the standard to safeguard democracy.

Relatedly, France, yesterday, said it provided intelligence and logistical support to Benin to help thwart Sunday’s coup attempt in the former French colony, according to officials from the French presidency.

AbdulRazaq said a successful military takeover in Benin would have created opportunities for militants and other non-state actors operating across the Sahel to further destabilise Nigeria.

He said large portions of the country, including the forests, had already been infiltrated by armed groups.

The governor, in a statement, insisted that any collapse of constitutional order in the neighbouring country would have had direct security implications for Nigerian border communities.

He stated, “Apart from supporting democratic order in the Sub-region, the president acted in the best interest of Nigeria and West Africa.

“With the Sahel already in severe security distress, a successful coup in Benin would have had devastating effects on our own country due to the long and porous borders we share.”

The forum praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for the rapid response that helped restore stability in Benin, stating that threats to cities such as Porto Novo, Cotonou or Parakou pose serious risks to Nigeria.

“It is our position that democracy, despite its challenges, remains the most reliable framework for regional peace, stability and development,” it added.

NGF said the intervention, carried out at the request of Benin, strengthened ongoing ECOWAS security efforts aimed at preventing further spread of militancy in the region.

Senate Okays Troops’ Deployment, Backs Tinubu

Senate, yesterday, granted Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to the Republic of Benin. The lawmakers described the move as decisive and constitutionally grounded to prevent the collapse of democratic order in the neighbouring country.

The approval came moments after the senate president, Godswill Akpabio, read Tinubu’s urgent letter, triggering an immediate debate and a vote of affirmation from senators, who said Nigeria could not afford instability next door.

Ruling after the session, Akpabio declared, “Distinguished colleagues, will the senate now confirm the actions of Mr. President, the deployment of the Air Force and troops to the Benin Republic to ensure a peace mission and restore order and sanity in that country? Those in support say ‘aye’… Those against say ‘nay.’ The ayes have it. The approval is hereby confirmed.”

Akpabio praised Tinubu for adhering to constitutional provisions by seeking legislative consent before putting Nigerian troops in harm’s way.

He said, “Let me thank the president for complying with the constitutional requirements.

“We believe he has taken a step in the right direction. This is about saving a neighbouring democracy, protecting Nigerians from the ripple effects, and preventing the influx of thousands of refugees. Injury to one is injury to all.”

He added that senators approved the request “without much discussion” because the threat unfolding in Cotonou demanded unity of purpose. “We congratulate the president for rising to the occasion,” he said.

In his letter, Tinubu informed the upper chamber that the government of the Republic of Benin had come under immediate threat from an “attempted unconstitutional seizure of power” that imperilled its democratic institutions.

Tinubu said the situation required “urgent external intervention,” particularly air support from Nigeria, to prevent anti-democratic forces from toppling the government.

Tinubu wrote, “The government of the Republic of Benin is currently faced with an attempted unconstitutional seizure of power and destabilisation of democratic institutions.

“The distinguished Senate may wish to note the close ties of brotherhood and friendship between Nigeria and Benin, as well as the principles of collective security within ECOWAS.”

The president, who doubles as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, anchored his request on Section 5(5) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandated Senate approval for deployment of the armed forces on foreign missions.

He urged senators to grant “expeditious consideration” so that the armed forces could respond without delay.

Immediately after reading the letter, Akpabio referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for deliberation, saying the matter is “a national priority with far-reaching security implications for Nigeria and the ECOWAS region”.

Senators subsequently reviewed the operational, legal and diplomatic dimensions of the planned deployment before giving the green light.

The senate president promised that the approval document would be transmitted to the president immediately.

The attempted coup in Benin had further heightened concerns within ECOWAS, which had, in the past four years, witnessed multiple military takeovers in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Niger.

Under Tinubu’s leadership, the regional bloc had repeatedly warned that unconstitutional changes of government posed an existential threat to West Africa’s stability and economic integration.

Only days before the senate received Tinubu’s request, ECOWAS had issued a strongly worded statement condemning developments in Cotonou and urging member states to stand firmly against anti-democratic forces.

Nigeria and Benin share deep security cooperation, especially along their expansive land borders, where joint operations target smuggling, terrorism and transnational crime.

The unfolding crisis presented a major test of that longstanding partnership and Nigeria’s readiness to assert leadership in defending democratic governance in the region.

Lawmakers warned that failing to act quickly could trigger destabilisation that would spill into Nigeria, affecting border communities and potentially overwhelming security agencies with refugee inflows.

Akpabio summed up the chamber’s stance, when he said, “The impact this would have had on Nigeria in terms of the security of our brothers would have been terrible. We have acted swiftly, and in the national interest.”

Extolling the contribution of Nigeria in truncating the overthrow of democratic governance in Benin Republic, Touray asked that Nigeria should be given a standing ovation by the gathering.

He stated the swift intervention of Nigeria’s military within a short period to stop the coupists, insisting that this should be the standard in the region if democracy must be protected.

The ECOWAS commission president said, “Events of the last few weeks have shown the imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.

“Faced with this situation, Excellencies, it is safe to declare that our community is in a state of emergency. For that, the sessions of the mediation and security council should be organised more regularly beyond the two ordinary sessions for the next one year. We must confront these threats with the attention they deserve.

“We must pool our resources to confront the threats of terrorism and banditry, which operate without respect for territorial boundaries.”

He also highlighted other causes of humanitarian challenge to include growing erosion of electoral inclusivity across multiple states; expanding influence of terrorists and armed groups and criminal networks threatening regional stability.

Touray pointed out the need for constant monitoring of political situations within member states.

“This council needs to constantly monitor the political and security situation in our Community, to provide guidance and to enable regional action,” he said.

France Reveals It Provided Logistical Support to Thwart Attempted Benin Coup

France provided intelligence and logistical support to Benin to help thwart Sunday’s coup attempt in the former French colony, officials from the French presidency said yesterday.

French officials said they also shared intelligence with Nigeria, which sent fighter jets and ground troops to its much smaller neighbour at Benin’s request, a Reuters report said.

The unrest was the latest threat to democratic rule in the region, where militaries had in recent years seized power in Benin’s neighbours – Niger and Burkina Faso, as well as Mali, Guinea and, only last month, Guinea-Bissau.

“France provided support in terms of surveillance, observation, and logistics to Benin forces,” a French presidential adviser told reporters. “This support was done as part of regional efforts by ECOWAS,” the adviser said, referring to the regional bloc.

French officials declined to give more detail. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to the presidents of Nigeria and Benin on the phone over the weekend, his office said.

After retreating from much of its former West African sphere of influence over the past few years following coups in several nations, France had been lying low, preferring to work in support of local governments rather than intervene directly as it did for most of the post-colonial decades.

Northern Benin had suffered repeated jihadist attacks, including major assaults in January and April that killed dozens of soldiers. The coup plotters cited insecurity in the north as a justification for attempting the putsch, the Reuters report added.

Cleric Hails Tinubu for Quick Action

Religious and community leader, Apostle Lawrence Bamilaw of Apostolic Grace Network International, commended for his proactive response to the failed coup in Benin, saying his decisive leadership saved the neighbouring country from what could have escalated into a full-blown crisis.

Bamilaw made the remarks while addressing journalists during this year’s edition of the African Marathon Praise “25,” held at the Correspondents’ Chapel in Osogbo yesterday.

Bamilaw thanked Tinubu for his timely intervention, emphasising that such initiative demonstrated the leadership qualities that Nigerians hoped to see applied domestically, particularly in addressing the country’s persistent insecurity challenges.

He highlighted the pressing need for urgent action against crimes, such as kidnapping, banditry, Boko Haram insurgency, and other violent criminal activities that continued to threaten peace and stability in Nigeria.

Bamilaw stated, “The Nigerian crime situation requires drastic action and strategic measures. The president’s swift response in the Benin Republic shows that with determination and effective leadership, security challenges can be managed.

“This same proactive approach should be applied within our borders to protect citizens from criminal activities and insurgency.”

The Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, has proposed N14.88 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

He described it as the Budget of Restoration, Innovation and Development.

Obasa stated that the projected revenue would be largely driven by federal allocations amounting to N14.57 billion, comprising N2.08 billion from statutory allocation, N12.14 billion from Value Added Tax, and N355.29 million from other FAAC-related sources, while Internally Generated Revenue is expected to contribute N306.8 million.

He explained that the proposed expenditure was equally balanced at N14.88 billion, with recurrent expenditure standing at N8.23 billion, covering personnel costs of N2.95 billion, pension obligations of N503.46 million, and overhead costs estimated at N4.77 billion, while capital expenditure was put at N6.65 billion.

The chairman said the budget is anchored on three core pillars of restoration of public infrastructure, innovation in governance and service delivery, and sustainable, inclusive development aimed at improving the quality of life of residents across all seven wards of the local government.

He noted that major priorities under the capital programme include road rehabilitation and construction, drainage expansion, street lighting, modernization of public facilities, school infrastructure upgrades, healthcare facility improvement, and environmental sanitation and beautification projects.

Obasa further stressed that education, healthcare, infrastructure, environmental management, youths and women empowerment, and social welfare would remain the strategic sectors driving the implementation of the fiscal plan.

Reflecting on the performance of the outgoing year, the council boss highlighted the construction and rehabilitation of key roads across Agege and Dopemu, extensive drainage works to tackle flooding, renovation of several public primary schools, establishment of a tech hub, e-library, and vocational centres, as well as landscaping projects across major roads.

He also listed wide-ranging environmental and health interventions, including the employment of 300 street sweepers, acquisition of refuse compactors, community sanitation campaigns, provision of vaccine storage equipment, digital health tools, community health outreach, and health insurance for vulnerable pregnant women.

Adamawa State Police Command has deployed additional personnel and operational assets to Lamurde Local Council following the state government’s declaration of a 24-hour curfew amid renewed communal violence.

Spokesperson for the command, Suleiman Nguroje, in a statement, urged residents to comply fully with the curfew and remain indoors to prevent further breakdown of law and order.

He noted that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Dankombo Morris, has ordered intensified enforcement across the affected communities.

Security personnel were also confirmed to have been tasked with monitoring compliance, restoring calm and maintaining peace by all lawful means.

The command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property while working closely with other security agencies to stabilise the area. Residents were advised to avoid any action that could heighten tension or threaten public safety.

“The command will not allow miscreants and misguided elements to operate unchallenged,” the statement reads.

It further assured that officers would conduct their operations professionally, avoiding unnecessary force or action that could result in loss of life during the enforcement of the curfew.

The police appealed to members of the public to cooperate with ongoing security operations aimed at restoring normalcy.

Sunday’s attacks had sent shockwaves across the state after heavily armed tribal militia, reportedly advancing from neighbouring Gombe State, launched coordinated assaults on many Bachama communities in Lamurde leaving many reportedly dead and settlements destroyed.

Local sources stated that the attackers advanced from creeks bordering Gombe and overran villages, including Tingno, Waduku and two nearby communities.

The renewed hostilities erupted just days after Governor Ahmadu Fintiri facilitated a fragile peace agreement between the Chobo and Bachama groups.

A counter insurgency security expert Zagazola Makama has claimed that Burkina Faso authorities are yet to release detained Nigeria Air Force (NAF) pilot despite diplomatic pressure, condemnation.

In post on 𝕏 on Tuesday evening, Zagazola wrote: “Burkina Faso has continued to hold a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) pilot and crew more than 24 hours after their detention, despite repeated diplomatic efforts by the Nigerian government and widespread condemnation of the action as a blatant violation of international norms.”

However, reports had emerged claiming Burkina Faso released the eleven Nigerian military officers who were detained after their Air Force transport aircraft made an ‘unauthorized’ landing in the country on Monday.

According to Business Insider Africa, the personnel were cleared to return home after Burkinabè authorities completed initial checks amid suspicions related to Nigeria’s intervention in the Benin coup attempt.

The personnel were aboard a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 that landed in the western city of Bobo-Dioulasso. Burkinabè security officials told the BBC that the officers were released after initial questioning and permitted to depart.

While the NAF maintained that the aircraft was en route to Portugal on a ferry mission and was forced to make a “technical emergency landing” due to a fault, the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) – comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – offered a contrasting, more aggressive account.

The country’s Territorial Administration Minister, Emile Zerbo, stated the plane violated national procedures by flying into Burkina Faso “without authorisation,” prompting security agencies to intervene.

Military sources, yesterday, confirmed that one of the wanted, and notorious terrorist kingpin, ‘Kalamu,’ was among the terrorists neutralised during the ambush operation conducted by Special Forces of 8 Division in Sokoto State on Monday.

Consequently, the villagers of several communities in the Sabon Birni Local Government Area of the state, who have suffered kidnapping for ransom and attacks, trooped out to the streets jubilating the successful operation of the troops.

Vanguard had reported that troops of 8 Division, Nigerian Army, in a daring offensive operation on Monday thwarted an attempt by heavily armed terrorists to invade a Sokoto community and embark on a kidnapping spree.

Military sources disclosed to Vanguard that in the heavy gun battle, 11 terrorists were neutralised while available andnoticeable blood stains during exploitation showed that fleeing terrorists escaped with gunshot injuries.

Sources said: “In the early hours of December 8, 2025, 8 Division Special Forces stormed bandits hideout around Kurawa village Sabon Birni LGA.

“The terrorists were attempting to attack Tara village in Sabon Birni LGA which was thwarted.
“Troops neutralised 11 terrorists and captured eight AK 47 rifles, five extra magazines and 26 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.”

It was gathered that the successful offensive against the bandits is in furtherance of troops action to deny criminal elements and non state actors, freedom of action.

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka on Tuesday criticised the large number of armed security personnel that he saw accompanying Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu.

Mr Soyinka spoke in Lagos while presenting an honourary award to Odia Ofeimun, the famous poet and activist who was honoured by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism.

Mr Soyinka mocked the situation by saying that President Bola Tinubu should not have deployed Nigerian soldiers and air force officials to Benin to foil Sunday’s coup there but should instead have asked Seyi Tinubu to go with his armed security escorts to foil the coup.

Mr Soyinka said he counted at least “15 or so heavily armed to the teeth” security officials who accompanied the president’s son at a hotel in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) for alleged terrorism financing.

The ex-Minister is also to explain issues relating to money laundering, especially operation of suspicious accounts.

Malami has been asked to account for his investment of about N10billion in Kebbi State, whereabouts of $322million Abacha loot recovered from Swiss account and about $22million from Island of Jersey in the UK.

The EFCC was holding on to Malami as at 10pm on Tuesday because he has not been able to meet his bail conditions.

But the ex-AGF said his public record in office stands in direct contradiction to any insinuation of complicity in terrorism financing.

A top EFCC source said the allegations against Malami were many which will require some days to go through.

The source said:”We have detained the ex-Minister for terrorism financing and the whereabouts of Abacha loot recovered from Switzerland and Island of Jersey in the UK.

“His sudden wealth of N10billion investments in Kebbi State are under investigation. We may attach some of these assets.

“We are likely to interrogate one of his wives on her role on N4billion Anchor Borrowers cash advanced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“He has a lot to clarify but he has not been able to meet bail conditions. He might be with us until he fulfils these.”

But Malami has rejected allegations of terrorism financing.

 He cited his key roles in Nigeria’s AML/CFT Reforms and FATF Grey-List exit to dismiss the terrorism financing insinuations.

In a statement on X, Malami said: “My attention has been drawn to a recent publication in which my name was mentioned in connection with allegations of terrorism financing and so-called “links” to persons described as terror suspects or alleged financiers.

“I consider it necessary, in the interest of truth, justice and public record, to make the following clarifications.

“First, I state clearly and unequivocally that I have never at any time been accused, invited, interrogated, investigated or charged by any security, law-enforcement, regulatory or intelligence agency—within or outside Nigeria—in respect of terrorism financing or any related offence.

“Secondly, even the retired military officer cited as the principal source in the said publication categorically admitted that he was not accusing me, or other named individuals, of financing terrorism.

” His own account, as reported, was limited to a vague assertion that certain suspects allegedly had some form of “business” or “institutional” relationship with various persons.

” That important clarification was, unfortunately, overshadowed by a headline and framing capable of misleading well-meaning members of the public into drawing inaccurate and damaging conclusions which was unfortunately politically manipulated by my political opponents to create mischievous insinuations implying my involvement in terrorism financing.

“Terrorism financing is a grave crime with devastating consequences for national security and human life. Any attempt—whether by direct allegation or indirect innuendo—to associate an individual with such an offence must be grounded in verifiable facts, due process and lawful findings, not in conjecture, speculation, or guilt by association. To suggest that lawful professional or institutional engagements can, without more, be read as evidence of terrorism financing is both mischievous and unjust.

“For the avoidance of doubt, my public record in office stands in direct contradiction to any insinuation of complicity in terrorism financing. During my tenure as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, I worked with other arms of government and relevant institutions to strengthen—not weaken—Nigeria’s legal and institutional framework against money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

“Among other efforts:

●The Federal Government, through collaborative work involving the Federal Ministry of Justice, the National Assembly and other stakeholders, established an independent Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) by law, in order to meet global standards on operational autonomy and to restore Nigeria’s standing within the international financial-intelligence community.

●We supported and saw to the enactment of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which repealed the older Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act and provided a more comprehensive and stringent framework for combating money laundering and related offences, including those that may underpin terrorism financing.

●We similarly worked on the passage and implementation of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which strengthened Nigeria’s legal regime against terrorism, updated offences and penalties, and reinforced provisions dealing specifically with the financing of terrorism in line with international standards and United Nations obligations.

●In furtherance of these laws, my office cooperated closely with key domestic institutions—such as the NFIU, the Central Bank of Nigeria, law-enforcement and regulatory agencies—and with international partners, to improve coordination, information-sharing and compliance across the anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing (AML/CFT) architecture.”

BENIN CITY – THE Speaker of the Edo State Youth Parliament, Prince Fawaz Muhammed, has resigned his position and membership of the parliament, citing abandonment of youth-oriented programmes and non-funding of the parliament.

In a letter addressed to the Clerk of the parliament, Muhammed said they have been self-funding the parliament and that most of the programmes that relate to youths were being abandoned while praise singers are the people getting attention, a development he said was contrary to the reason for the setting up of the parliament

He said “The Edo State Youth Parliament has survived not through institutional commitment but through the personal and financial sacrifices of its members.

“This is unsustainable, unjust, and contrary to the spirit in which this Parliament was established.

“In the current dispensation, we’ve seen youth welfare decline from bad to worse. Young people are losing confidence in good governance. Critical issues affecting Edo youths receive little to no meaningful attention, unless they are touts or praise singers of misgovernance. Presently, youth concerns are pushed to the background and treated as an afterthought when they are acknowledged at all.”

He said the establishment of the Parliament sowed a visionary seed that empowered young people to learn, question, challenge, and lead “However, leadership demands clarity, honesty, and the courage to confront uncomfortable truths. Today, I choose truth over silence, duty over comfort, and my people over political pretence.

“I cannot, in good conscience, remain a ceremonial Youth Parliament Speaker while my constituents face fear, vulnerability, and administrative indifference. I cannot lead a Parliament that runs on sacrifice while those empowered to strengthen youth governance look the other way.

“I cannot allow my voice to be confined within a system that has chosen not to listen. When institutions fail, leaders must refuse to fail with them.”

Checks at the Ministry of Youths which oversees its activities did not yield any response but a senior civil servant who did not want his name mentioned said the ministry look into the development through the appropriate channels

United States President Donald Trump has reignited debate over America’s birthright citizenship policy, insisting that affluent foreigners are exploiting the provision to secure citizenship for their families.

Speaking in an interview with Politico’s Dasha Burns, Trump expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would eventually overturn the policy, which currently grants automatic citizenship to children born on US soil, including those of undocumented migrants and foreign nationals with “no ties to the U.S.”

Trump argued that the law’s original purpose has been “distorted,” saying it was designed in the post Civil War era to protect children born to enslaved people.

“The case is very interesting because that case was meant for the babies of slaves… It was exactly having to do with the Civil War,” he said.
“It was not meant for some rich person coming from another country, putting a foot in our country, and suddenly their whole family becomes United States citizens.”

The President warned that the US “cannot afford to house tens of millions of people that came in through birthright citizenship,” stressing that the Supreme Court overturning the provision would not only be justified but necessary.

His concerns were echoed on Capitol Hill. Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) raised alarm over a surge in “birth tourism,” especially among wealthy Chinese nationals, taking advantage of visa exemptions in the Northern Mariana Islands.

According to Tiffany, the islands now witness more foreign childbirths than local births.
