NHRC Condemns Lamurde Killings, Demands Independent Probe
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the killing of unarmed, peaceful protesting women in Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State, calling for an independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killings.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, in a statement in Abuja, warned that such actions amount to grave violation of human rights which he said is fundamental, inalienable rights every Nigerian.
Ojukwu who demanded that the Federal and State Governments should commit to respecting and protecting citizens’ rights to peaceful protest, and immediately review security-sector protocols to prevent excessive use of force, also requested that measures for reparation and psychosocial support be made available to survivors and families of victims.
While calling for a scaled up civic-education and human-rights awareness programmes, especially in conflict-prone areas in order to rebuild public trust and reinforce the legitimacy of peaceful protest, the Nigerian human right’s chief defender urged the federal government to fast-track the adoption of the National Policy on Protection of Civilians in Conflict Situations and further called on the Adamawa State Government to urgently initiate peacebuilding and conflict resolution mechanisms to resolve on-going inter-communal conflicts in the state.
“The National Human Rights Commission expresses its profound shock and deep sorrow over the tragic killing of protesting women in Lamurde Local Government Area, Adamawa State.
“The pattern of violence against peaceful protesters undermines the protective mandate of the NHRC, which exists to uphold these very rights under its enabling legislation”.
“On the 31st of July, the NHRC issued an “Advisory on the Protection of the Right to Freedom of Association and Assembly in Nigeria” where it stated the principles and values underpinning these twin freedoms as cornerstones of our democracy. It is our strongest view that where the Freedom of Assembly is violated, the very foundation of our democracy is attacked.
The National Human Rights Commission affirms that the killing of protesting women whether done by members of the Armed Forces as alleged by many accounts or by Non-State Actors violates the very essence of our humanity – the right to life”, Ojukwu stressed.
Further calling on all responsible authorities to immediately identify and hold to account all those responsible and ensure they face appropriate criminal prosecution, the senior advocate of Nigeria demanded that there should be provision for full reparations and support to the victims, their families and the communities affected.
He also called on the government to guarantee that no similar incident happens again and enforce strict adherence to legal standards on use of force, and by facilitating the safe exercise of citizens’ rights to protest, assembly, and expression.
The Peace Corps of Nigeria, PCN, has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, of acting in bad faith in the arraignment of its National Commandant, Dr Dickson Akoh, and the Director of Finance, Mrs Omolola Aminat Ahmed, at the FCT High Court on December 11.
The Corps said that the arraignment of its two bosses on contractual transaction was unlawful, illegal and uncalled for.
In a statement on Friday in Abuja by its Media Consultant, Comrade Peterhot Apeh, Peace Corps said it was wrong of the EFCC to have criminalized a simple civil contract transaction between Peace Corps of Nigeria and Jethel Nigeria Global Resources Limited.
PCN, in the statement, recalled that contract No: 101/PCN50 for the production of badges of ranks, Nigerian/Service Badges, beret badges and related kits was freely awarded to Jethel Nigeria Limited on July 12, 2024 and freely accepted by the company on the same day in writing by its Managing Director, Okocha Jones Gido.
The Corps said that challenges arose in the payment of the contract sum when the police unlawfully sealed off its national secretariat in Abuja which, till date, has crippled the activities of the organization .
Specifically, Peace Corps said that it was unable to effect full payment for the contract sum due to the inability to sell the badges to its members across the country as a result of the sealing of its secretariat.
The organization recalled that Jethel Limited had on March 6, 2025 petitioned the police on the matter and Police in a letter with No; 3000/IGP-SEC/MU/ABJ/T.2/Vol.115 of March 6, 2025 invited the national commandant in respect of the matter.
After taking arguments from the two parties, the Office of the Inspector General of Police practically resolved the matter with a conclusion after investigation that the issue in dispute was a simple business transaction fully documented by the two parties.
The police however committed the Peace Corps of Nigeria and Jethel Limited to an agreement by the two parties in writing to facilitate short term payment.
Peace Corps noted with happiness that in compliance with police facilitated agreement, it on December 9, 2025 made the first part payment of N20 million to keep faith with the agreement.
PCN however noted with regret that four days after the office of IGP resolved the matter specifically, March 10, 2025, Jethel still took similar petition to EFCC in flagrant breach of the agreement reached at the Police Headquarters.
It alleged that rather than following the lawful and civil resolution adopted at the Police Headquarters, EFCC took side with Jethel Limited with unnecessary harassment and intimidation of the two Peace Corps chiefs in simple civil contract matter.
The organization noted that when its Director of Finance on December 9 went to its Abuja office to present the evidence of N20 million part payment for the contract sum, only for the EFCC, rather than appreciating the payment, “unlawfully arrested and detained the lady” .
Peace Corps also expressed sadness that the same EFCC arrested and detained its national commandant when he went to the Commission’s office to effect the release of the detained officer.
While faulting the EFCC for acting as debt recovery agency for the contractor, Peace Corps warned the anti-corruption agency to stop the impunity of criminalising simple business transactions .
The organization called on EFCC Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede, who by training, is a lawyer, to wade into the unlawful action of its operatives, especially those involved in the instant matter, by calling them to order .
PCN particularly noted with deep concerns that the arraignment of its national commandant and director of finance was borne out of malice because of their refusal to cooperate with operatives to compromise the matter.
The Peace Corps urged the EFCC boss to always obey and respect court orders in the discharge of it functions, adding that an Abuja High Court presided by Justice J.E Obanor had on August 11, 2025, ordered the Commission to maintain status-quo in respect of the contract dispute between Peace Corps of Nigeria and Jethel Limited .
The order of the court followed a motion filed against EFCC by Peace Corps Director of Finance, Omolola Ahmed, in which she prayed the court to stop the Commission from harassing, intimidating, arresting or detaining her in respect of the contract.
The PCN also noted that another Abuja High Court through Justice Edward Okpe had on April 7, 2025, restrained Jethel Limited from further harassing, arresting or taking any adverse steps against Akoh in respect of the contract dispute.
Peace Corps therefore demanded that the charges against its two chiefs be immediately terminated in court so that the EFCC will not be seen as acting unlawfully as a debt recovery agency for anybody or organization.
Former Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, has declared that he is still in active politics.
According to the former Minister who spoke on Friday at the convocation lecture of Achievers University in Ondo State, a politician can never retire from politics.
“You can never retire from politics. Once you are in, you are in forever. It’s for life,” he said.
Mohammed also affirmed his commitment to the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that he intentionally stayed off the limelight.
He added that he fully supports the current administration, but whatever he needs to do now, he passes it through the back doors, having been at the forefront of government activities in previous times.
“I am a very loyal member of the APC.
“I am 100% behind this administration. But I have played my role on the front line. Whatever I need to do now, I will pass it through the back channels.
“I have been very privileged to have been minister for eight years, the longest-serving minister in the history of this country,” he said.
Tinubu Doing Well
The former Minister submitted that President Tinubu does not deserve the harsh criticisms coming from certain political quarters.
Speaking specifically on the challenges of insecurity facing Nigeria, Mohammed argued that those outside the government often don’t understand the efforts those in power put in.
“Many people who are not in the kitchen don’t know the fire coming out of it.
“Is there any president who would want his own country to be insecure? The government is doing a lot. We must all encourage the government.
“All the change we are looking for must begin with all of us. Security is local. Actionable intelligence is part of it.
“The president cannot be in Abuja and know what is happening everywhere. People must report suspicious movements. The president is doing his best, and insecurity is a global issue,” he said.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has endorsed Ghanaian President John Mahama as its sole candidate for chairperson of the African Union.
Mr Mahama was chosen as the bloc’s candidate for chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship position reaches West Africa in 2027.
PREMIUM TIMES reports that the ECOWAS Council of Ministers reached this decision on Friday at the 95th ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, held in Abuja.
The council said it made the decision because Ghana is “an important ECOWAS Member State and contributes to its international standing.”
It also considered the need to “maintain and increase the chances of ECOWAS occupying positions in regional and international organisations.”
The Ghana Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Ablakwa, in a post made on X Friday, also announced that the Authority of Heads of State and government of ECOWAS is expected to adopt this declaration on Sunday.
“ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Abuja, Nigeria has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sole candidate from ECOWAS for Chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship gets to West Africa’s turn in 2027.
“The Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to adopt this declaration on Sunday.
“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” Mr Ablakwa wrote.
The AU member states elect new senior leadership of the AU Commission. The body’s last election, which brought in the Angolan President, João Gonçalves Lourenço, was held in February.
The position is rotated across different regions of the continent, with the election of a Southern African President this year, and a West African leader in 2027.
Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani had previously held the chairmanship after being elected in February last year at the 37th session of the AU Assembly.

During the 2027 election, candidates from West Africa will be voted on by all AU member states, and a two-thirds majority is generally needed to win.
Meanwhile, ECOWAS’s early candidate selection increases the likelihood that West African states will coordinate their votes at the AU level.
It also strengthens Mr Mahama’s profile within the AU ahead of the official election.

GCC Zaria Class Of 1979 Reunites After 46 Years As Alumni Promise Support To Alma Mater
Government Commercial College, GCC, Zaria, Class of 1979 has reunited after 46 years of graduation.
The reunion which took place in Abuja featured lecture, health talks, Annual General Meeting, AGM, dinner among other varieties.
Delivering the Reunion Lecture, the Guest Speaker from Political Science Department, University of Abuja, Prof. Abubakar Sadiq Abba called for unity of purpose among the Alumni.
Prof. Sadiq Abba whose lecture centered on benefits and challenges of Alumni highlighted the importance of Alumni Association and stressed the need for Class ’79 of Government Commercial College, Zaria to effectively harness the potentials of all Alumni towards improving their lots and that of their Alma Mater.
According to him, the benefits of Alumni is both vertical and horizontal which include building of infrastructures in their Alma Mater through institutional support while they also have various responsibilities to themselves as individual and their communities as well as the nation in general.
He therefore called on Alumni Associations to always compliment the efforts of Government in developing the nation’s education sector.
In his words “This they can do by institutionalizing scholarship for the less privileged, construction of classrooms, provision of books and instructional materials, institutionalize the best teacher of the year, promote productivity and professionalism, construction of school clinic among other projects that can fast track the growth of education in the country”.
While congratulating them for being alive to reunite after 46 years of graduation , Prof. Sadiq Abba emphasized the need for them to come up with functional and effective leaders that would pilot the affairs of its Alumni.
An Alumnus of the College and Dean, Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, Oyo State, Dr. Mrs Folashade Abiola expressed joy for the reunion after 46 years of graduation g from Government Commercial College, Zaria saying they are determined to work together towards ensuring the wellbeing of one another.
Dr. Mrs Folashade Abiola also expressed their readiness to contribute to the educational growth of their Alma Mater.
On his part, Mr John Ibrahim who is also an Alumnus of the College was elated for seeing his school mates after over four decades from Government Commercial College, Zaria.
Mr John Ibrahim who is a Retired Staff of Ministry of Finance, Kaduna promised to contribute his quota towards realizing the objectives of the reunion.
The reunion programme of activities which lasted for three days in the Federal Capital Territory saw Alumni winding and dinning as well as sharing ideas on the way forward as a family.

In her video, which she posted on TikTok, the lady, @bekee047 said it was risky to have built such a high tank stand close to a house.
The video showed the tank stand almost has the same height as the three storey building and there were eight tanks on it.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a Nigerian man shared a video showing the tank stanchion installed in a compound where he went to work.

The state Minister for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, has formally received Sadiq Abubakar Ciroma, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, into the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The state APC chairman, Tukur Danfulani, presented Ciroma to Matawalle on Friday, welcoming him and his supporters into the party.
Speaking at the event, Matawalle described Ciroma as a politician with vision and sound judgment, saying his move to the APC would benefit the people of Zamfara.
He assured Ciroma and his supporters of equal opportunities within the party.
Ciroma explained that his resignation from the PDP was due to what he perceived as the APC’s more inclusive leadership and performance in the state.
He accused the PDP-led government under Governor Dauda Lawal of neglecting local communities and focusing primarily on revenue collection.
Reacting to the defection, the chairman of Kaura Namoda Local Government Council, Manir Haidara Kaura, alleged that Ciroma had worked against the PDP even before a recent state assembly by-election.
Haidara accused him of leaking confidential party strategies and collaborating with APC stakeholders, raising doubts about his loyalty.
The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to put an end to what he described as fiscal rascality, particularly the pattern of uncontrolled and unexplained borrowing that does not contribute to productive sectors of the economy.
Obi, in a post on his verified X handle on Friday, criticised the government’s plan to secure about ₦20 trillion in new loans to finance the 2026 budget.
According to him, the borrowing plan is alarming at a time when debt servicing is projected to consume nearly half of the nation’s revenue, and when the country’s borrowing requirement has risen by more than 72 percent.
He questioned the rationale behind planning fresh multi-trillion-naira loans for 2026 when the 2024 budget is still being implemented and the 2025 budget appears untouched.
Obi wrote, “Where is the revenue from 2025? How can we be discussing trillions in new borrowing for 2026 when we are still implementing the 2024 budget? This suggests, very clearly, that the 2025 budget is still untouched and unimplemented.
“So, where are all the revenues that accrued in 2025, even when we were told that revenue targets had been surpassed since August?”
He warned that continuous borrowing for consumption rather than production would endanger the country’s future.
“We cannot keep mortgaging the future of our children through thoughtless borrowing. Nations do not develop by consuming more than they produce.
“They develop by producing, exporting, creating value, and building strong institutions that ensure accountability,” he said.
Obi added that the government cannot boast of increased revenue while simultaneously pushing borrowing to historic levels.
“Governance must be built on transparency, not propaganda. We cannot build a new Nigeria on the foundation of misleading figures, rising debts, shrinking production, and continuous hardship. Our nation must move forward,” he added.

Dr. Adefulire, a UK-based medical doctor, reportedly died in the early hours of Wednesday, December 10, 2025, after undergoing an undisclosed surgical procedure in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
A family source confirmed the incident to Vanguard, stating the death was unexpected and a devastating blow to the family. The deceased is survived by his wife and children.
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) confirmed the development, with party spokesperson Seye Oladejo describing the incident as “the kind of tragedy most dreadful for parents,” adding that the entire party structure was shaken.
Princess Orelope-Adefulire, a prominent figure in Lagos politics, served as Deputy Governor from 2011 to 2015 under former Governor Babatunde Fashola.
