Groups fault Soyinka’s comment, say tight security for Seyi Tinubu justified, not political
Two civic organisations, operating under the umbrella of the Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative (GMI) and the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), have issued a joint response to recent remarks by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, regarding the security detail attached to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The groups noted that Seyi Tinubu had previously come under attack during the charged political atmosphere preceding the 2023 party primaries, an incident they said underscored the genuine threats that accompany his public visibility and influence.
In a statement jointly endorsed by GMI’s National Coordinator, Samaila Musa, and DWI’s Director of Strategic Communications, Dr. Tunji O. Bamidele, the organisations argued that Seyi Tinubu’s status as the first son of a sitting president naturally subjects him to heightened scrutiny and, at times, hostility.
According to the statement: “We hold Professor Soyinka in high regard for his contributions to literature and his advocacy for justice, we believe that his comments on this matter merit a thoughtful and reasoned rebuttal.
“Professor Soyinka’s critique appears to stem from a perspective that overlooks the unique circumstances surrounding Seyi Tinubu’s public life and the potential threats he faces.”
The groups emphasised Seyi Tinubu’s sustained interactions with young Nigerians, his involvement in youth-focused initiatives, and his efforts to expand opportunities for everyday young people. While these engagements have strengthened his influence, they said, they have also increased his exposure to risks.
GMI and DWI urged Soyinka to refrain from politicising issues of personal safety, warning that his remarks could unintentionally diminish the seriousness of the threats individuals like Seyi Tinubu encounter.
“In a nation where political tensions and violence can escalate rapidly, it is imperative to recognize the need for adequate security measures for individuals in high-profile positions and especially members of the first family whenever the need arises.
“Seyi Tinubu has not only embraced his role as a public figure but has also actively engaged with the youth of Nigeria, advocating for their interests and facilitating appointments that resonate with their aspirations.
“His commitment to youth empowerment and involvement in advocating for ordinary Nigerian youths has positioned him as a pivotal figure in the current administration, a role that, regrettably, also heightens his vulnerability.
“It is essential to emphasize that the provision of security for Seyi Tinubu is not merely a matter of privilege; it is a necessary precaution to ensure his safety and well-being. In a society where political violence is not uncommon, the protection of individuals who are influential in shaping the future of the nation must be prioritized.
“To dismiss the need for such protection is to disregard the realities of our political landscape and the potential dangers that accompany public service. Furthermore, we urge Professor Soyinka to refrain from politicizing issues of security and safety.
“The implications of his remarks could inadvertently undermine the seriousness of the threats faced by individuals like Seyi Tinubu. While it is crucial to engage in healthy political discourse, it is equally important to approach matters of personal safety with the gravity they deserve knowing fully well the security situation in Nigeria for the past twenty years can not be compared with other claims that Professor Soyinka was trying to reference.”
“Security is not a luxury; it is a fundamental right that should be afforded to all citizens, especially those who have chosen to serve their country in the public eye. The Grassroots Mobilisation Initiative and Democracy Watch Initiative stands firm in our belief that Seyi Tinubu, given his unique position and the challenges he faces, is deserving of police protection,” the statement read.
Reiterating their position, the groups maintained that Seyi Tinubu’s circumstances justify the security provided to him. They encouraged all stakeholders, including Soyinka, to prioritise safety above political disagreements.
They added: “Let us move beyond political rhetoric and work together to ensure a secure environment for all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliations or familial ties.”
President Bola Tinubu has described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike as an “audacious top performer” and a “shining star in his cabinet” who defies obstacles and delivers results.
Tinubu made the remark while felicitating with the FCT Minister of on his birthday.
Wike clocked 58 on Friday, December 13, 2025 and was celebrated by his friends and associates.
However, Tinubu thanked God Almighty for enriching Wike with a life defined by purpose, service, and courage.
In a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president acknowledged the “ongoing transformation of the Federal Capital Territory through infrastructure expansion, highlighting the Minister’s recent intervention that broke the 14-year logjam in the construction of the Apo-Karshi road.’
The President commended the Minister for his resilience, “can-do attitude, and commitment to excellence in all assignments.”
He applauded the FCT Minister for his consistency towards r sults delivery and wished him strength to further his good work in the capital city.
“Nyesom Wike has been one of the shining stars in the cabinet, an exceptional performer, developing infrastructure in the Federal capital as never seen before and proving that his moniker as ‘Mr Project’ is not limited to his home state of Rivers,” he added.

The Nigerian Army troops of 3 Division of Operation Lafiyan Jama’a have rescued four abducted persons and neutralised a kidnapper during an ambush operation in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to Zagazola Makama, the operation followed intelligence on the abduction of four persons at Rimi village in Jere District of Bassa LGA.
The sources disclosed that at about 3:28 a.m. on Friday, troops of Sector 1 of the operation deployed from Jingre and laid an ambush along the suspected withdrawal route of the kidnappers.
“During the operation, the troops made contact with the kidnappers and exchanged fire, forcing them to abandon the four victims and flee,” the sources said.
They added that troops subsequently exploited the general area and discovered the corpse of one kidnapper neutralised during the encounter.
Items recovered from the fleeing kidnappers included one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and 13 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
According to the sources, the rescued victims were debriefed and later reunited with their families, while efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the remaining members of the kidnap gang.
They noted that no casualty was recorded on the side of the troops, adding that morale and fighting efficiency of personnel remain satisfactory.

Yobe State has emerged as the overall winner of Nigeria’s Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge, outperforming other states in an independently verified assessment.
The assessment measures governance, financing, service delivery and accountability within PHC systems.
The award was announced at the PHC Leadership Challenge Awards and Gala Night organised by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and development partners, including the Gates Foundation, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The annual challenge, which rewards measurable improvements in state-level PHC performance, aims to strengthen accountability, peer learning and sustained political commitment to PHC reforms across Nigeria.
How states were assessed
The PHC Leadership Challenge is built on a Performance Monitoring Framework (PMF) jointly developed by health sector stakeholders and endorsed by all states through their commissioners for health and heads of state PHC agencies.
The framework tracks progress across key domains aligned with the Seattle Declaration commitments signed by governors in 2019, including governance and leadership, financing, quality of care, human resources for health, data use, evidence and sustainability.

The verified findings were reviewed by an Independent Judging Panel (IJP), comprising public health experts, academics, civil society representatives, traditional and religious leaders, and media professionals, before final endorsement by the PHC Leadership Challenge Steering Committee.
The steering committee is chaired by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammed Pate, with membership drawn from the NGF, NPHCDA and key development partners.
Standout performances
During the presentation, Yobe State was said to have delivered an “exceptional and well-balanced performance” across governance, quality of care, service delivery coordination and data integrity, earning it the national overall prize of $700,000.
The state also clinched the best-performing award in the North-East, securing an additional $500,000, after leading in indicators such as patient satisfaction, availability of essential commodities and effective PHC coordination mechanisms.
Gombe State emerged as first runner-up in the North-East, winning $400,000 for strong results in human resources for health.
Across other zones, Nasarawa, Zamfara, Abia, Bayelsa and Osun states emerged as best performers, while Kwara, Kaduna, Anambra, Bayelsa and Ogun picked up first runner-up prizes.
All best-performing zonal states received $500,000, while runners-up earned $400,000 each.
In total, 13 awards worth $6.1 million were presented under the challenge.
The judging panel noted that at least 20 states recorded measurable improvements in health reforms, though performance remained uneven, particularly in leadership engagement and governance.
‘Progress visible, gaps remain’
Speaking at the event, the Gates Foundation said Nigeria had recorded notable gains in PHC outcomes but warned that progress remained fragile without sustained leadership.
In remarks delivered by Uche Anowu on behalf of the Deputy Director for Health Systems Strengthening at the foundation, Nkata Chuku, the organisation highlighted improvements in routine immunisation, maternal health services and malaria interventions.

Mr Chuku noted that the National routine immunisation coverage has risen to the high 60 per cent range, with several states exceeding 75 per cent, compared to the low 60s in 2022.
He added that more than 500,000 zero-dose children were reached between July 2024 and October 2025 through targeted immunisation campaigns.
Also, skilled birth attendance and antenatal care coverage have improved, while integrated vaccination campaigns have expanded access to malaria prevention tools.
However, challenges persist, including insecurity in parts of the North-east and North-west, nutrition risks in conflict-affected areas and inconsistent data reporting.
He disclosed that the Gates Foundation has invested $27 million in the PHC Challenge Fund over the past four years, with 70 per cent dedicated to performance-based awards.
“The Challenge Fund is a tool. Your leadership is the engine that will deliver lasting change for every Nigerian family,” he said.
Governors reaffirm commitment
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, said the challenge has become a national accountability mechanism for health sector reform.
Mr AbdulRazaq, who was represented by the Governor of Nassarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, said the initiative demonstrates that “measurable and dramatic change is possible” when political leadership is combined with sustained investment and peer accountability.
“We are not just celebrating awards tonight, but the institutionalisation of a national tradition that reinforces leadership responsibility for primary healthcare,” he said.

He noted that states have increased domestic health funding in recent years, with a growing share directed to primary healthcare, leading to improvements in infrastructure, staffing and service delivery.
He commended state commissioners for health, PHC agency heads and development partners for driving reforms aligned with Nigeria’s health sector renewal priorities.
Minister urges long term investment
During his address, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, described health investment as both a social and economic imperative, urging states to sustain reforms through smarter resource allocation, transparency and long-term planning.
Mr Pate said recent reforms under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII) have strengthened collaboration between federal, state and local governments, while improving transparency and efficiency in health spending.
“Health is a fundamental aspiration of every human being. Investing in health is investing in the present and the future of the country,” he said.
According to him, investments in PHC are beginning to translate into better maternal, child and infectious disease outcomes, but sustaining the gains will require long-term commitment.
He said the government had increased health sector investments and prioritised affordability, access to essential medicines, workforce expansion and transparency in resource allocation.
He noted that the next phase of reforms would focus on smarter resource allocation, workforce development and system-wide transparency to ensure that investments translate into improved outcomes for citizens.
He described the PHC Leadership Challenge as a key accountability mechanism that encourages states to prioritise health while fostering peer learning and competition.
“This is not just about celebrating achievements, but about sustaining progress and building a health system that delivers for Nigerians today and in the future,” he said.

Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chairman and ex-Nigerian Ambassador to South Korea, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, has described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike as the “naked wire” of Rivers politics.
Akawor, who is the ex-Director-General of Nyesom Wike’s 2015 governorship campaign, said Wike’s feat had shown that President Bola Tinubu picked the right product from the PDP to work with.
He disclosed this while leading the
Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and members of the state House of Assembly to celebrate with Wike on his 58th birthday.
Wike, who clocked 58 on Friday, had his residence in Abuja flooded with friends and associates who came to felicitate with him.
Speaking last night, Ambassador Akawor while eulogizing Wike made reference to Psalm 90 verse 12, where “the Lord teach us to number our days.”
He said: “Your excellency, on behalf of the zonal Coordinators of the Renewed Hope, the 23 Coordinators, 319 Coordinators at the Ward level, and the 6,866 unit leaders of Rivers State. The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, has declared that not even $1 billion could tempt him into politics.
According to Politics Nigeria, he made the statement during the impartation service of the church’s annual convocation, Shiloh 2025.
Bishop Oyedepo urged church members to focus on their divine callings, stressing that it is within their God-given purpose that they can “rule their world” and be enlisted in God’s end-time army.

His message encouraged believers to remain steadfast in their God-given purposes rather than being distracted by worldly pursuits. By focusing on their calling, he stressed, Christians can positively influence their communities and nations, following the example of biblical figures like Joseph and Daniel.

In addition, road access within farms will be enhanced to accelerate the evacuation of produce, while integrated technology systems will provide end-to-end tracking and management of the supply chain. Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has explained that criminal networks, including bandits involved in kidnappings, use sophisticated communication technology that makes them difficult to track through conventional SIM registration systems.
He said the calls made to victims’ families do not rely on standard mobile towers, challenging assumptions about unregistered or fraudulently registered SIM cards.
Speaking on the intersection between digital regulation and national security, Tijani dismissed claims that large numbers of unregistered SIMs remain active despite the National Identification Number linkage policy.
He noted that telecom operators had conducted a nationwide clean-up exercise to eliminate improperly registered lines from the system.
Beyond conventional mobile networks
He added, “It’s more technical than that communication. There was a special kind of technology that they were using to call. They weren’t using the normal towers. They bounced calls off multiple towers when they leave,” explaining why tracking the origin of such calls remains difficult.
Government response and satellite investment
Tijani said this technical reality partly explains why bandits prefer operating in remote and unconnected areas, where conventional network infrastructure is weak or absent.
He added that the technology being used does not depend solely on Nigeria’s standard mobile tower architecture.
The minister revealed that President Bola Tinubu approved increased investment in telecommunications towers in hard-to-reach areas after security agencies identified gaps in coverage exploited by criminals.
These investments aim to limit the advantage bandits gain from operating outside network reach.
He also disclosed that the Federal Government is upgrading Nigeria’s existing communication satellites to strengthen surveillance and connectivity.
Tijani said satellite coverage would serve as a backup where terrestrial towers fail.
The minister emphasised that addressing technologically driven crime requires coordinated investment across digital infrastructure, security intelligence, and innovation, rather than reliance on SIM registration alone.
