A nuclear attack on the UK would prove catastrophic

A chilling map has exposed the devastating destruction that could be wreaked by a Russian nuclear assault on three key targets across the UK, as World War 3 anxieties reach fever pitch. In the latest ominous warning to emerge from Moscow, Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s veteran foreign minister, this week outlined the conditions that would prompt Vladimir Putin to launch an attack on Europe.

In remarks that will only heighten concerns about an all-out clash with Europe, Lavrov launched a scathing attack on Britain and EU nations whilst lavishing praise on Donald Trump for his 28-point Ukraine peace proposal. It represents just the most recent in a string of menacing threats from high-profile Russian officials in recent weeks.

Only today, the Russian propaganda machine has declared that the admission of the presence of UK armed forces in Ukraine constitutes a “casus belli” for a nuclear attack on Britain, with Kremlin mouthpiece Vladimir Solovyov stating on his programme: “Now a nuclear strike on Britain is inevitable….”

Earlier this month, reports emerged that Dmitry Rogozin, a Russian senator and military veteran, had shared a list of strategic British targets for potential Russian assault and cautioned that Britain could become “deadly dangerous”.

Similarly, in additional alarming remarks, Putin adviser Sergey Karaganov recently declared to Russian state-controlled television channel Russia-1 that “this war will not end up until we defend Europe – morally and politically.” But what would warfare with the UK actually look like if Russia unleashed some of its staggering arsenal of 5,580 nuclear warheads?

An interactive map designed to demonstrate the impact of such an attack, called NUKEMAP, gives us a glimpse into the potential destruction zone and the catastrophic combined death toll of roughly a quarter of a million people.

According to Gene Sticco, a national security specialist and former Air Force nuclear defence expert, we should “avoid anywhere near the US and NATO facilities”.

He continued: “Otherwise, the key military centres – Telford, Plymouth, South Yorkshire, and the South East and South West of England.”

Should an attack happen tomorrow, however, Gene reckons the probable target would be: “Naval centres – this is the UK’s strength and lifeline. Strike at Plymouth and Barrow-in-Furness.”

Plymouth

Working on the basis that Britain would face an assault from the 800-kiloton Topol (SS-25), which the website says is currently part of Russia’s arsenal, the consequences would be catastrophic.

It would claim an estimated 133,510 lives, wound 85,830 people and create a fireball stretching 1.28 km (5.16 km2). The heavy blast damage radius would extend 2.02 km (12.8 km2), whilst the resulting radiation would cover 2.43 km (18.6 km2).

In the shocking image above, the explosion seems to reach approximately 285 miles from Plymouth, which houses Britain’s biggest naval facility, stretching nearly to Peterborough, with the map indicating a thermal radiation zone (causing third-degree burns) spanning 9.7 km (296 km2).

Telford

Applying the same calculations to Telford, which houses a Ministry of Defence facility at Donnington, yields equally devastating outcomes. An estimated 71,350 fatalities and 49,040 injuries would occur, as well as mirroring the blast figures mentioned earlier.

The map shows this explosion reaching northeast towards Scarborough (a distance of roughly 173 miles) and extending beyond the coastline into the North Sea.

Furthermore, the map indicates that radiation would eventually claim the lives of 15% of survivors due to cancer caused by exposure.

Barrow-in-Furness

In a scenario similar to Telford, a nuclear strike on Barrow-in-Furness – home to the only UK site capable of designing and building nuclear submarines for the Navy – would also extend beyond the coast into the North Sea.

Echoing the previously mentioned blast figures, the explosion would result in an estimated 54,060 deaths and 12,620 injuries. The graphic depicts a blast spanning the width of Northern England, just below the Scottish border and narrowly missing Carlisle.

The map further reveals that the light blast damage radius would span an astonishing 10.9 km (375 km2). In total, the estimated death toll from all three strikes would reach 258,920.

The Department of Homeland Security has pledged to appeal the latest ruling, slamming it as ‘naked judicial activism’.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose case has become a flashpoint in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in the United States, has been freed from detention on a judge’s order and returned to his home, according to reports.

Abrego Garcia was due to check in with US immigration officials on Friday, The Associated Press news agency reported, a day after returning to his home following his release from an immigration processing centre in the latest twist in a convoluted case of deportation and detention targeting the Maryland man.

In a ruling on Thursday, US District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement to let Abrego Garcia go immediately, writing that federal authorities had detained him again after his return to the US without any legal basis.

Abrego Garcia has an American wife and children and has lived in Maryland for years, under protected legal status since 2019, when a judge ruled he should not be deported because he could be harmed in his home country by a gang that targeted his family. He originally moved to the US without documentation as a teenager.

He then became the highest-profile case among more than 200 people sent to the notorious El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in the US.

He was wrongfully deported by the Trump administration to El Salvador in March. A court later ordered his return to the US, where he was detained again, as immigration officials sought to deport him to a series of African countries instead of El Salvador.

‘Judicial activism’

The Department of Homeland Security slammed Thursday’s ruling and said it would appeal, labelling the decision as “naked judicial activism” by a judge appointed during President Barack Obama’s administration.

“This order lacks any valid legal basis, and we will continue to fight this tooth and nail in the courts,” said Tricia McLaughlin, the department’s assistant secretary.

Abrego Garcia’s lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, said he expected his client’s ordeal was far from over, and he was preparing to defend him against further deportation efforts.

“The government still has plenty of tools in their toolbox,” Sandoval-Moshenberg said.

“We’re going to be there to fight to make sure there is a fair trial.”

The lawyer said the judge’s ruling had made it clear that the government could not detain a person indefinitely without legal authority, adding that Abrego Garcia had already “endured more than anyone should ever have to”.

Legal battles ongoing

Abrego Garcia has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the Trump administration is illegally using the deportation process to punish him due to the attention his case received.

Since his return, federal authorities have also filed charges against Abrego Garcia for alleged human smuggling related to a 2022 traffic stop.

He has pleaded not guilty and filed a motion to dismiss the charges, claiming the prosecution is vindictive.

In her ruling on Thursday, Judge Xinis said Trump lawyers “affirmatively misled” the court, including falsely claiming that Costa Rica had rescinded an offer to accept Abrego Garcia.

Abrego Garcia has said he was willing to resettle there in the event he was deported from the US.

In a separate proceeding, Abrego Garcia has also petitioned to reopen his immigration case to seek asylum in the US.

Wes Streeting has warned resident doctors that strikes and a jump in flu cases over the Christmas period could be “the Jenga piece” that forces the NHS to collapse.

The health secretary said the NHS faced a “challenge unlike any it has seen since the pandemic” and urged resident doctors to accept the government’s offer and end their actions.

He said: “The whole NHS team is working around the clock to keep the show on the road. But it’s an incredibly precarious situation. Christmas strikes could be the Jenga piece that collapses the tower. That’s why I am appealing directly to resident doctors to accept the government’s offer.”

NHS figures published on Thursday showed flu cases at a record level for the time of year after jumping 55% in a week to an average 2,660 patients in hospital each day last week.

Writing in the Times, Streeting said the number of patients in hospital in England could triple by the peak and described the scenes in hospital as “inexcusable”.

Dr Chris Streather, a regional medical director at NHS England, said while the impact of flu admissions on hospitals was “pretty bad” but it was “nothing like the scale” of the Covid pandemic.

Asked if talk of the NHS collapsing was over the top, Streather told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “The NHS is coping at the moment. The flu rates are still going up.”

He added: “It’s well within the boundaries of what we can cope with. One of the things we learned during the pandemic was our preparation for coping with large outbreaks of respiratory viruses got better. We increased the number of critical care or intensive care beds during that time, so we’re better prepared. And it’s a different scale from the situation we’re facing in March 2020, you have to prepare for the worst case.”

Streather said there were 2,500 patients in hospitals in England with flu admissions, a 55% increase on the previous week and the equivalent of three large hospitals being full of flu patients.

“It’s a significant problem,” he said. “It’s nothing like the scale of the 2020 pandemic. And I think we need to use our language to make people do the right healthy behaviours but not to cause alarm at the moment.”

The health secretary said the British Medical Association (BMA) leadership calling off planned Christmas strikes would have “given the NHS certainty this week, when it is firefighting the flu epidemic”.

The BMA said it would consult members by surveying them online on whether a new deal from the government was enough to call off strikes next week.

The online poll will close on Monday, two days before the five-day strike is due to start.

The union said the new offer includes new legislation to ensure homegrown doctors in training have priority for speciality training roles, an increase in speciality training posts over the next three years, with 1,000 of these to start in 2026, and funding mandatory examination and Royal College membership fees for resident doctors.

Matt Wright’s lawyers say he intends to appeal the verdicts

Celebrity crocodile wrangler Matt Wright will spend five months in prison for tampering with evidence after a helicopter crash that killed his co-star and left the pilot a paraplegic.

In August, the former Netflix star was found guilty of lying to police and pressuring a hospitalised witness after the 2022 crash in the Northern Territory (NT).

On Friday, Acting Justice Alan Blow handed Wright a 10-month prison term, which will be suspended after he has served half of it. He was also fined A$5,000 ($3,300; £2,500).

Justice Blow said Wright had “shown no remorse” but was “very unlikely to reoffend in any significant way in the future.”

The maximum sentence for his charges was 15 years in prison.

The jury could not agree on a verdict for a third charge that alleged Wright asked someone to “torch” evidence.

Wright’s lawyers indicated previously that they planned to appeal the guilty verdicts.

The judge pointed to mitigating factors in deciding the length of his jail term, like his contribution to the community and character references that were the “most impressive I’ve ever seen”.

The NT Supreme Court case centred around a helicopter crash in February 2022 in Arnhem Land, about 500km (310 miles) east of Darwin.

Wright’s friend and Outback Wrangler co-star Chris “Willow” Wilson – suspended from the chopper in a sling during a crocodile egg harvesting trip – was killed.

The pilot Sebastian Robinson was seriously injured, suffering punctured lungs and a severe brain injury.

Wright, who was not in the helicopter, was one of the first people to arrive at the crash site.

During the month-long trial, prosecutors told the court that Wright had lied to police about how much fuel was in the helicopter’s tank when it plummeted to the ground.

The evidence included secret recordings of Wright’s conversations which, the prosecution said, contradicted his claims that the fuel tank was half full when asked in police interviews.

Wright was also accused of going to the hospital bedside of Mr Robinson – who had been told by doctors he may never walk again – and asking him to change flight records that showed how many hours the aircraft had flown.

Prosecutors argued this was because Wright was worried that investigators would find out he regularly changed the official flying hours of a chopper to avoid costly maintenance.

The jury delivered unanimous verdicts for both the charges.

A third charge related to Wright asking a friend to “torch” the helicopter’s maintenance record.

The jury was deadlocked on the third charge and unable to return a verdict. It remains under consideration by the courts.

The case does not relate to the cause of the crash, the death of Mr Wilson and Mr Robinson’s injuries.

False flight records was the norm

The trial exposed the inner workings of the NT’s helicopter community with revelations that it was common practice to “pop the clock” by disconnecting a meter that records flight hours in order to delay maintenance requirements.

The prosecution argued that falsifying flight records was rampant across the industry and Wright was worried his involvement in this practice would be blamed for the crash.

Wright’s defence lawyer accepted that under reporting of flight hours was “widespread throughout the NT’s helicopter community,” but argued Wright had not perverted the course of justice when he tried to cover up the doctored records.

During the trial, the jury heard how Wright visited Mr Robinson several times while he was in hospital.

Wright, the prosecution claimed, was there to put “the hard word” on the injured pilot, asking Mr Robinson to transfer flight hours from the crashed aircraft to another helicopter.

During cross-examination, Mr Robinson denied being a “raging cocaine junkie” after another witness – a fellow helicopter pilot – described him as a “party animal”.

The court heard that a blood sample from Mr Robinson showed traces of cocaine but below the “prescribed amount for enforcement” under aviation rules, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Mr Robinson also told the court he had no memory of the crash but conceded that he “must have intentionally disconnected” Wilson’s sling as it was best practice in an emergency to release the collector. Investigators concluded that Wilson died after falling 25m to the ground.

‘Everyone looked at Matt as an idol’

Wright is best known globally as the star of National Geographic’s Outback Wrangler and Netflix’s Wild Croc Territory reality shows.

He also owns several local tourism businesses and has been a tourism ambassador for Australia.

During the trial, Mr Robinson told the court how people who worked for Wright revered him.

“Absolutely, everyone looked at Matt as an idol and if he said ‘jump’ they’d say ‘how high’,” Mr Robinson said, adding “everyone wanted to be around him, work for him”.

“We were young men, we looked up to him and we wanted to do our best to make ourselves look good in front of him and do whatever he said.”

Before the sentencing was handed down, prosecutor Jason Gullaci SC said Wright should serve a term of “actual immediate imprisonment” to reflect the “seriousness” of his crimes.

He described Wright’s repeated visits to Mr Robinson in hospital to request records be manipulated as significantly more serious than lying about the fuel as it was “considered, planned and all directed at achieving the result of obstructing the course of justice”.

Wright’s lawyer David Edwardson KC requested that the judge not sentence his client based on his “celebrity status” and that Wright’s estimation about the chopper’s fuel level was “done to protect a mate”.

Tens of thousands of people in the US state of Washington were ordered to evacuate on Thursday evening as surging floodwaters turned farmlands into vast pools.

At least 78,000 poeople in the state’s agricultural region were told to flee the floodplain, one day after the state declared a state of emergency. Over 12,000 homes were without electricity on Thursday night, according to PowerOutage.us.

Governor warns of ‘potentially historic’ floods 

“The flooding levels we’re looking at are potentially historic in nature, so we just want to emphasize how serious the situation is,” Governor Bob Ferguson said at a news briefing Thursday. He said more than 30 major highways had been closed due to traffic.

On Friday, Pierce County’s fire department posted a video of emergency crews rescuing stranded residents in the city of Puyallup. “Turn around, don’t drown. Never drive through flooded roads. Stay out of floodwaters. They can hide debris, other hazards, and have strong currents,” they said, advising people to follow evacuation orders. 

The local county website warned of possible mudslides, flooded roads and broken river banks.

“While the rains have slowed down, many rivers and creeks across Pierce County remain at elevated flood Levels,” one advisory said.

Meanwhile, the National Guard has been deployed with helicopters and boats being used to bring people to safety.

Along the river in Mount Vernon, teams knocked on doors in low-lying areas to inform them of evacuation notices, city authorities said.

The Trump administration made plans to pull four friendly countries out of the European Union and into America’s orbit in an effort to “Make Europe Great Again”, according to a report.

The 29-page US National Security Strategy (NSS) sent shockwaves around Europe when it was unveiled last week, condemning Washington’s European allies as “weak” and offering support to far-right political parties.

According to Defense One, a longer and unpublished version of the document suggested taking Austria, Hungary, Italy and Poland out of the EU and into greater alignment with the US, while backing movements supportive of “traditional European ways of life”.

The four nations were cited as countries the US should “work with more … with the goal of pulling them away” from the EU, according to the US-based news channel, which claimed to have reviewed the document.

The White House strongly pushed back against the existence of an unabridged version of the report.

Defense One claims that it elaborated on how Donald Trump would like to build Washington’s relationship with ideologically aligned administrations, as the US focuses on domestic priorities.

“We should support parties, movements, and intellectual and cultural figures who seek sovereignty and preservation/restoration of traditional European ways of life … while remaining pro-American,” it said, according to Defense One.

The alleged document is likely to spark further alarm in Europe, just days after the NSS claimed countries such as France and Germany were “decaying” due to migration and stifled economic growth.

White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly refuted the existence of the report, telling Defense One: “No alternative, private, or classified version exists.

“President Trump is transparent and put his signature on one NSS that clearly instructs the U.S. government to execute on his defined principles and priorities.”

The published version of the document also accused Europe of failing to stop the war in Ukraine, claiming that European leaders had let the conflict “keep going on and on”.

It said “the Trump Administration finds itself at odds with European officials who hold unrealistic expectations for the war perched in unstable minority governments, many of which trample on basic principles of democracy to suppress opposition”.

The report also claimed that Europe faces “civilisational erasure” – a narrative that aligns with far-right parties. Last week, a former US diplomat told The Independent that the document is “disastrously dumb.”

As Europe is forced to spend more to replenish depleted defence industries, Nato’s secretary general warned on Thursday that the continent should prepare for a war “like our grandparents endured” and boost defence spending to deter Russia.

“I fear that too many are quietly complacent. Too many don’t feel the urgency. And too many believe that time is on our side. It is not. The time for action is now,” he said.

“Allied defence spending and production must rise rapidly. Our armed forces must have what they need to keep us safe.”

The King has recorded a ‘personal message’ about his cancer diagnosis and recovery which will be played in a ground-breaking broadcast today.

Charles’s address will be shown as part of ‘Stand Up To Cancer 2025’, a joint campaign by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

The King, 77, was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of the disease in early 2024 and has been receiving weekly treatment ever since.

Despite this he has continued with a packed working diary, with five state visits this year alone.

In his message, the monarch will stress the importance of cancer screening programmes in enabling early diagnosis and will ‘reflect on his own recovery journey’.

It was recorded during the last week of November in the Morning Room at Clarence House.

This year’s Stand Up To Cancer event is designed to drive awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, as well as raising funds for cancer research and support all those affected by the illness.

His Majesty’s message will form part of Channel 4’s flagship night of programmes and will be aired at 8pm, shortly before a unique live broadcast from a cancer clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, presented by presenter Davina McCall, who was herself recently treated for breast cancer.

Earlier this year the King visited patients at the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Birmingham and spoke to them candidly about his own experience of cancer

As far as royal communications are concerned, particularly for a head of state, it is a major break with tradition to offer a personal, televised message on a private medical matter.

Buckingham Palace has always chosen not to reveal the King’s own cancer or treatment, although they have confirmed that it is not prostate-related.

This is partly out of medical privacy, but also because Charles has been personally keen for his openness in speaking about living a full life with the disease, while undergoing treatment, to appeal to the widest possible audience.

His decision to speak publicly about such a difficult personal matter sparked a huge uptick in people seeking information from NHS and charity websites.

The monarch was diagnosed in February last year, days after going into hospital for routine surgery for an enlarged prostate.

At the time Buckingham Palace said: ‘During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

‘His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

‘Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

‘His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.’

This year’s Stand Up To Cancer initiative has launched a simple online screening checker – screeningchecker.co.uk – which helps users determine which breast, bowel and cervical screening programmes they may be eligible for, provides trusted information from Cancer Research UK, and directs users to further support where needed.

When it comes to celebrities such as Taylor Swift, you would expect them to spend thousands of pounds on their hair products due to the huge amount of disposable income. But the singer from Pennsylvania has surprised fans once again with her choice of products, especially as they can be bought on the high street.

While performing on her 21 month tour, The Eras Tour, the 35-year-old allowed cameras to follow her every move for a documentary series on Disney Plus. In the first trailer for the six part series, The End of an Era, fans got a glimpse of Taylor’s life after getting off stage, including her starting to run a bath in her hotel.

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted that there was a line up of products on the side of the bath, including Swift’s shampoo, conditioner and bodywash. Fans have now used their detective skills to find out exactly what products the 14-time Grammy Award winner was using during The Eras Tour.

For Shampoo Taylor used the Christophe Robin Delicate Volumising Shampoo With Rose Extracts with the matching conditioner. The Shampoo can be bought for £24 at Sephora UK, with the conditioner costing just under £28 at the same store.

On the Christophe Robin website, people have described the duo of products as “smelling absolutely beautiful” and claim that it makes their hair feel “full and voluminous”.

As for body cleanser, Taylor was using OUAI in the sent St Barts, which is described as smelling like dragon fruit, orange blossom, tuberose, with a base of amber or musk. The product costs £19.50 from Boots, which again surprised fans.

One commented: “I actually thought it would be more expensive.” Another penned: “I had that body wash in a Sephora birthday gift it’s genuinely amazing.”

A third said: “Honestly, I’m buying all that right now.”

Other items in the bathroom included Dr. Barbara Sturm Super Anti-Aging Cleansing Cream, which is around £45 and Tata Harper Regenerating Cleanser which comes in at £84.

The End of An Era behind-the-scenes docuseries shows the inner workings that created the phenomenon that was Taylor Swift The Eras Tour. It gives fans an intimate look at Taylor’s life as her tour made headlines and thrilled fans around the world.

In addition, the series spotlights performers, family members, and friends including Gracie Abrams, Sabrina Carpenter, Ed Sheeran, and Florence Welch. The first two episodes of the series were released on December 12.

After that, two episodes will be released each week. Taylor wrote about the decision to make the series on social media: “It was the End of an Era and we knew it. We wanted to remember every moment leading up to the culmination of the most important and intense chapter of our lives.

“So we allowed filmmakers to capture this tour and all the stories woven throughout it as it wound down. And to film the final show in its entirety.”

A 25-year-old British backpacker has been sentenced to four years in prison after a fatal collision with a father-of-two while riding an electric scooter in Perth, Western Australia.

Alicia Kemp, from Redditch, Worcestershire, appeared at Perth District Court on Friday, where she pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death while under the influence of alcohol.

Judge Wendy Hughes handed down a four-year sentence, backdated to June 2025 for time served, with a non-parole period of two years.

Kemp could be eligible for release in mid-2027, and her driver’s licence has been suspended for two years.

She was over the legal blood alcohol limit when she struck 51-year-old Thanh Phan on 31 May. Mr Phan later died in hospital from a brain bleed.

Kemp and a passenger on the e-scooter sustained minor injuries.

The incident has sparked a national debate about e-scooter safety, prompting Perth and several surrounding councils to suspend hire services indefinitely.

In a statement, Mr Phan’s family described him as a “beloved husband, father-of-two and dear friend”.

Dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in Western Australia.

E-scooter riders in the state must be over 16, wear a helmet, carry no passengers, and remain sober while riding.
