Sir Cliff Richard today revealed he has been secretly treated for prostate cancer for the past year.

The British star, 85, said he was diagnosed after a health check for his insurance ahead of a concert tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The singer was speaking to veteran broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan, 67, who has himself has been diagnosed with stage four advanced prostate cancer.

Sir Cliff said his cancer had ‘gone at the moment’ and backed calls for a national screening test for men, calling it ‘absolutely ridiculous’ there is not one already.

The Daily Mail has long campaigned for a national screening programme – similar to that in place for breast, bowel and cervical cancer – to be implemented as a chance to save thousands of lives.

And it came after King Charles, whose cancer type has not been revealed, also urged people to get checked in a landmark video message on Friday night.

In an interview with Good Morning Britain, Sir Cliff said: ‘I don’t know whether it’s going to come back. We can’t tell those sort of things but we need to, absolutely, I’m convinced, get there, get tested, get checked.’

‘The good fortune was that it was not very old, and the other thing is that it has not metastasised. Nothing had moved into bones or anything like that.’

The singer, known for decades of hits including The Young Ones, We Don’t Talk Anymore and Summer Holiday, described the lack of a national screening programme as ‘absolutely ridiculous’.

‘We have governments to look after our country and those who live in that country, so I can’t see how you can say, ‘Oh we can do this, we can do that, but we don’t do this for these people’,’ Sir Cliff said.

‘We all deserve to have the same ability to have a test and then start treatments really early.

‘It seems to me – I’ve only been for one year now in touch with cancer, but every time I’ve talked with anybody this has come up and so I think our Government must listen to us.’

The King last week said his cancer treatment would be reduced in the new year, and Sir Cliff said he was keen to join forces to raise awareness.

‘I’ve been involved with many charities over the years and if the King is happy to front it for us, I’m sure loads of people, I certainly would join him.

‘If the King is listening, I think most of us would say “yeah – we’re available”.’

In November, the UK National Screening Committee announced a draft recommendation for a targeted prostate cancer screening programme.

If implemented, the programme would invite men aged 45 to 61 with a genetic mutation of the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes for screening every two years.

Dermot Murnaghan, who is himself in the midst of a cancer battle, said: ‘Prostate cancer, we should put out there, is the most prevalent cancer amongst men and the biggest cancer killer of men. There is no national screening programme’.

King Charles has been ‘deeply touched’ at the reaction from around the world after he spoke about his cancer battle, Buckingham Palace said yesterday.

Charles, 77, revealed in a video message that his treatment will be significantly scaled back in the New Year after he responded ‘exceptionally well’ to treatment following his diagnosis in February last year.

A spokesman for the Palace said: ‘His Majesty will be greatly encouraged and deeply touched by the very positive reaction his message has generated. 

‘He will be particularly pleased at the way it has helped to shine a light on the benefits of cancer screening programmes. 

‘It has long been the King’s view that if some public good can come from sharing elements of his personal diagnosis and treatment journey, then it would be his pleasure and duty to do so.’

The Palace also remarked on the ‘scale and sensitivity of the worldwide media reaction’ to the King’s announcement, and added that Charles’s ‘thoughts and warmest wishes will remain with all those affected by cancer and those who care for them’.

In Charles’s pre-recorded message, which was broadcast on Friday as part of Channel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer campaign, he urged people to get screened for cancer if offered the chance, saying ‘early diagnosis quite simply saves lives’.

As part of the campaign, the King also promoted a new online Screening Checker for people without symptoms to find out if they’re eligible for a free cancer check.

Michelle Mitchell, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, which backs the online tool, said last night: ‘Since launching our new cancer Screening Checker, we’ve seen around 100,000 visits so far from people seeking information about cancer screening, with most of these taking place after His Majesty the King spoke openly about his own cancer journey during the Stand Up To Cancer live show.

‘This response shows just how important open conversations about cancer can be.’

Veteran broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, a long-time friend of Charles, said the King’s message would help ‘many thousands who would have died’ to be less frightened of getting checked out and seeking life-saving treatment.

Referring to the 1,000 per cent surge in people going to the NHS website for advice after the King’s original admission that he had cancer, Mr Dimbleby said: ‘It demonstrates the unique role of the sovereign. No one else could have done this. It was unrivalled.

‘It takes guts to say ‘I’ve got cancer’, and the fact Charles came out and said that will save lives.’

Meanwhile the Princess of Wales, who has endured her own battle with cancer, attended a light display at Royal Marsden Hospital in London last night in support of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

The alleged father-son shooters at Bondi Beach are said to be behind the killing of 16 people and left dozens more injured in one of Australia’s deadliest attacks.

Naveed Akram, 24, was arrested at the famous beach in Sydney, New South Wales, before being taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for his critical injuries. His father, Sajid, 50, was fatally shot amid the chaos on Sunday.

The anti-Semitic terror attack took place as Jews gathered near the beach to celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah. Naveed was reportedly known to New South Wales and Sajid is said to have six firearms legally registered to him.

Naveed Akram

The shooters killed at least 16 and injured dozens

Bricklayer Naveed is alleged to have opened fire on hundreds of beachgoers celebrating Hanukkah on Sunday. According to ABC, he is said to have been previously investigated over alleged support for Islamic State.

Authorities are investigating whether he pledged allegiance to the terrorist group and he was also investigated by Australia’s spy agency for six months in 2019, reports the Telegraph.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “[Naveed Akram] was examined on the basis of being associated with others and the assessment was made that there was no indication of any ongoing threat or threat of him engaging in violence.”

Naveed was said to be an Australian-born citizen and had enjoyed boxing. He reportedly told his employer he would not be able to return to work until next year, due to breaking his wrist while boxing.

The alleged shooter’s Islamic teacher publicly condemned the attack. Sheikh Adam Ismail, from Sydney, was previously photographed handing Naveed with a certificate that showed he had mastered the Quran.

He is alleged to have been one of the gunmen dressed in black and handling numerous firearms. Naveed Akram is currently in hospital after being critically injured during the attack.

Sajid Akram was shot dead by police during the terror attack. He had six firearms legally registered to him and is believed to have used a rifle and shotgun that were retrieved by the scene.

Police said Sajid had a Category AB firearm licence. The licence requires a person to show they have a “special need” to own certain weapons.

Sajid Akram is said to have arrived in Australia on a student visa in 1998. He then transferred it to a partner visa and has been on resident return visas ever since.

The family lived in a Sydney suburb with a neighbour expressing how she was shocked to find out she was living next to killer Sajid.

Lemanatua Fatu told the Daily Mail: “We saw lots of police cars arriving in the street and especially in that house. We couldn’t sleep, watching everything – it was so scary.”

At least 16 people were brutally shot dead and some 40 others were wounded when the gunmen opened fire at Bondi Beach. There are victims who have not been named but police have said they believe they all range from 10 to 87 years old.

Family confirmed 10-year-old Matilda was among the dead, making her the youngest victim. Irina Goodhew, who organised a fundraiser for her family, praised her in a post, adding: “I knew her as a bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her.”

Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, had been an organiser of the Hanukkah event on Sunday. The British-born dad-of-five was praised by family as an “incredible guy.”

France’s Foreign Minister confirmed Dan Elkayam as another one of the victims. He is understood to have worked for NBCUniversal and moved to Australia last year.

Holocaust survivor Alexander Kleytman, originally from Ukraine, leaves behind his wife, two children and 11 grandchildren.

Peter Meagher, a freelance photographer, was confirmed by his rugby club to be among the dead. Businessman Reuven Morrison had previously lived in Melbourne but was said to have “discovered his Jewish identity in Sydney,” reports the BBC.

Rabbi Yaakov Levitan was praised as a “popular coordinator” who also worked at a Jewish learning centre.

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration in Bondi beach, which Australian police and officials are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update on Monday morning, New South Wales premier Chris Minns, has confirmed 16 people, including one of the alleged gunmen, have died, and 42 people injured in the shooting were taken to hospital.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old, he said.

Here are the victims who have been named so far.

The 10-year-old girl killed in the attack has been identified as Matilda. Her aunt, Lina, gave permission for Guardian Australia to publish her first name and photos approved by her mother.

“A great tragedy has happened to my family,” she wrote on social media. “My beloved niece Matilda was killed during a terrorist attack in Bondi beach. I don’t know how we survive such grief.”

Matilda was taken to Sydney children’s hospital on Sunday night, where she later died.

She was a former student of the Harmony Russian school of Sydney, which said it was “deeply saddened to learn of her passing”.

“Her memory will remain in our hearts, and we honor her life and the time she spent as part of our school family,” the school said in a statement posted to social media.

Her language teacher, Irina Goodhew, described her as a “bright, joyful and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her”.

Peter Meagher

Peter Meagher, also known as Marzo, died at Bondi on Sunday. He was a longtime volunteer at Randwick rugby club and they confirmed his death in a statement on Monday.

The statement said Meagher was working as freelance photographer at the Chanukah By the Sea event, and described his death as “simply a catastrophic case of being in the wrong place and at the wrong time”.

It said Meagher was “much loved figure and absolute legend in our club” and “one of the heart and soul figures of Randwick Rugby”. He had served as first grade manager of the club for most of the last decade and was previously a highly respected referee.

“In his professional life, Peter served for almost four decades in the NSW Police Force and retired as a Detective Sergeant, where he was hugely respected by his Police colleagues,” the statement read.

The club said that Meagher was a “much-loved figure” and that training sessions wouldn’t feel the same without him.

Tibor Weitzen

Tibor Weitzen’s grandson, Mendy Amzalak, told the Australian his grandfather was a “man full of life, joy, smiles and laughter”, who died shielding a family friend from the bullets.

Amzalak said he was one of the first responders at the scene when he came across his grandfather’s body. “My family were there for the event and my wife called me so I ran down to the beach with my defibrillator and the shooting was still going. I started treating people and then I came across his body,” he told the Australian.

His granddaughter, Leor Amzalak, confirmed Weitzen’s death to Guardian Australia.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Jewish News reported that the father of five, who was assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi, a Jewish cultural centre, grew up in Temple Fortune, north London, and his family members attend Kinloss synagogue in Finchley. His first cousin, Brighton-based Rabbi Zalman Lewis, described Schlanger as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

He told Jewish News: “How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?

“We can only respond by doing what Eli would have wanted, what he dedicated his life to – doing more mitzvot [good deeds] and to keep spreading positive energy.”

Schlanger and his wife, Chayala, celebrated the birth of their youngest child, a boy, in October.

Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, which represents the Australian Jewish community, told the ABC Schlanger was “a person who personified goodness and godliness and holiness, a person who lived literally for no reason other than to do good deeds”.

“I was praying, please don’t let it be him. I don’t know what we’ll do as a community without him,” Ryvchin said.

Rabbi Yossi Friedman said Schlanger was a “wonderful community man”, who was “just full of light”.

“He was just so positive and so obsessed with life and just bringing joy to everyone,” Friedman said.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, his wife, Larisa Kleytman, told reporters outside St Vincent’s hospital.

“We were standing and suddenly came the ‘boom boom’, and everybody fell down. At this moment he was behind me and at one moment he decided to go close to me. He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she told the Australian.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, and had recounted their experiences to JewishCare in 2023.

“As children, both Larisa and Alexander faced the unspeakable terror of the Holocaust. Alex’s memories are particularly harrowing; the dreadful conditions in Siberia where he, along with his mother and younger brother, struggled for survival,” the Australian Jewish health provider’s 2022-23 annual report reads.

“The scars of the past, however, did not deter them from seeking a brighter future. They later made the move to Australia, immigrating from Ukraine.”

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign minister, Jean-Noël Barrot, has confirmed French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead. In a translated post from X, Barrot said France mourned with his family and loved ones, with the Jewish community and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” he wrote.

“France will spare no effort to eradicate antisemitism wherever it is emerges, and to combat antisemitism in all its forms. The lights of Hanukah must not be extinguished and they will not be.”

The president, Emmanuel Macron, said his thoughts were with Elkayam’s family and their loved ones and expressed to them “the fullest solidarity of the nation”.

Elkayam was a soccer fan and played the 2025 season with the Rockdale Ilinden football club premier league squad, who described him as an “an extremely talented and popular figure amongst team mates”.

He was due to join Arncliffe Aurora football club, in southern Sydney, for their premier league squad for the 2026 season.

“Dan was a valued and deeply respected member of our football community. Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and all those who loved him during this unimaginably difficult time,” the club wrote on Instagram. “Dan will always remain part of our club.”

Reuven Morrison

Also known as Rueben, Morrison emigrated from the former Soviet Union to Australia in the 1970s. Chabad.org reported he divided his time between Sydney and Melbourne, and was a “successful businessman whose main goal was to give away his earnings to charities dear to his heart”.

In a 2024 interview with the ABC, Morrison said he had experienced persecution as a Jewish person in the Soviet Union but didn’t expect it to be happening in Australia.

“We came here with the view that Australia is the safest country in the world and the Jews would not be faced with such anti-Semitism in the future, where we can bring up our kids in a safe environment,” he said.

Yaakov Levitan

Yaakov Levitan, secretary of the Jewish institution, the Sydney Beth Din, was killed in the attack.

His death was confirmed to Guardian Australia by Sydney Beth Din senior member, Rabbi Yehoram Ulman.

One Israeli citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Thirty-eight injured, 27 still in hospital

Forty-two were transported to nearby hospitals and 27 remain – with five in critical conditions with the others remaining in serious and stable conditions. Two are police officers who attended the scene, who police said are in critical but stable conditions.

One of the injured is a man who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen, who has been hailed a local hero. He has two bullet wounds, one in his arm and one in his hand, but is recovering well in hospital, his relative said. Seven News reported that the bystander was a 43-year-old fruit shop owner from the Sutherland Shire.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of the injured to be identified is the head of the Sydney office of a public affairs organisation for the Australian Jewish community. Arsen Ostrovsky, head of the Australia Israel & Jewish Affairs Council Sydney office and an international human rights lawyer, was named by the Jerusalem Post, where he is a longtime contributor, as among those wounded. The Jerusalem Post reported Ostrovsky was receiving treatment and has been in contact with people via WhatsApp.

“[I’m] in [the] hospital recovering now,” Ostrovsky wrote to the Jerusalem Post. “Bullet grazed head. Lot of bleeding. Doctors said miracle survived, was that close. Have been stitched up now. Worst thing was being apart from my wife + kids at that instance. I got hit when I went towards them. Thankfully they got out OK. It was absolute bloodbath, children and elderly everywhere. Felt like scene from Nova. But also incredible seeing how everyone rushed to help. Surreal.”

Evan Zlatkis

Executive Council of Australian Jewry director of media, Evan Zlatkis, was also injured in the attack, telling the Daily Telegraph he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots. As he fled, he said he felt he was bleeding.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”

Legendary Hollywood film-maker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have been found dead in their Los Angeles home.

Authorities are investigating the incident as an apparent homicide after police and firefighters were called to the couple’s house on Sunday afternoon in an upmarket neighbourhood of LA.

Reiner is known for directing classic films including The Princess Bride, This is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” a family spokesperson said in a statement to US media.

“We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

Police said a 78-year-old man and 68-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the home, but officers did not immediately identify the couple or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Police also said no-one had been arrested, but that no suspect or person of interest was currently being sought.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department told the BBC they received a call at about 15:38 local time (23:38 GMT) for medical aid to a home in Brentwood, a neighbourhood that is home to many celebrities.

Robbery homicide detectives from the LA police department also responded to the home and have opened a homicide investigation.

In a news conference on Sunday night, police did not offer any details about the deaths or what they found when they responded. Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said both bodies were still inside the house, more than six hours after police and firefighters had been called.

Police also did not give details about any injuries the pair sustained, nor if any weapon was found or used. Hamilton said a cause of death would be determined by the LA coroner’s office.

‘Big-hearted genius’

California Governor Gavin Newsom released a statement that confirmed the death of Reiner and his wife.

Newsom said he was “heartbroken” by the deaths and called Reiner a “big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love”.

Former US President Barack Obama said he and wife Michelle were also heartbroken by the couple’s deaths.

“Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen,” he said. “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people – and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.

“Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Rob Reiner, the son of comedy great Carl Reiner, started his career in the 1960s and made it big playing Meathead in groundbreaking TV sitcom All in The Family in the 1970s, which scored him two Emmy Awards.

He achieved futher success with cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap in 1984, which he directed as well as playing on-screen director Marty DiBergi.

That began a run of classic Hollywood movies directed by Reiner, including Stand By Me (1986), The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally (1989), Misery (1990) and A Few Good Men (1992), the latter of which scored him an Academy Award nomination for best picture.

He reunited with Spinal Tap for long-awaited sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released this September.

Reiner also co-founded the successful Castle Rock Entertainment production company.

He was married to Laverne & Shirley actress Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981 and is the adoptive father to Marshall’s daughter, actress Tracy Reiner.

He married Michele Reiner, an actress, photographer and producer, in 1989. The couple have three children together.

Michele owned the Reiner Light photography agency and production house.

LA mayor Karen Bass called the incident a “devastating loss for our city and country”, and paid tribute to the couple’s charity work for childhood development and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

“Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” she said.

American director and actor Rob Reiner and his wife Michele have been found dead at their Los Angeles home, according to media reports.

A spokesperson for Reiner’s family confirmed the director and his wife died, CNN reported. 

Earlier, authorities had said that two bodies were found at Reiner’s home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood.

What do we know so far?

The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement that detectives with the Robbery-Homicide Division were probing the circumstances of the deaths as an “apparent homicide.”

Police have not immediately confirmed the identities of the bodies found in the home, and are not yet seeking any suspects. 

Earlier, the Los Angeles Fire Department had said it responded to a medical aid request just after 3:30 p.m. local time on Sunday and found the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman.

Who was Rob Reiner?

Reiner, 78, was a prominent name in Hollywood.

He began his career as an actor in the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom “All in the Family.”

He then shifted focus to directing. Some of his popular works include  “A Few Good Men,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “The Princess Bride.”

Rob was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner.

He met photographer Michele Singer Reiner while  directing “When Harry Met Sally”.

The couple got married in 1989 and have three children together. 

Reiner was also a liberal activist.

He was the co-founder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which initiated the court challenge that lifted the ban on same-sex marriage in California.

Condolences pour in for Reiner

California Governor Gavin Newsom posted a statement on X saying that was “heartbroken” by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner.

“Rob will be remembered for his remarkable filmography and for his extraordinary contribution to humanity,” Newsom said.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said Reiner’s death was a “devastating loss.”

“Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” Bass said.

Actor John Cusack, who was the male lead in Reiner’s film “The Sure Thing,” called the director a “great man.” 

“Shocked by the death of Rob Reiner – a great man,” he said.

Actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were discovered dead inside their home in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials.

The city fire department said the bodies of a 68-year-old woman and a 78-year-old man were found in the home on Chadbourne Avenue in the Brentwood neighborhood.

The identities of the victims were not initially confirmed, but a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told the Associated Press that they were Reiner and his wife.

Investigators believe they suffered stab wounds and a family member is being questioned by investigators. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

A spokesperson for the Reiner family told CNN late Sunday that Michele and Rob Reiner have died.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Los Angeles Police Department deputy chief Alan Hamilton told a press conference that the investigation was being handled by the LAPD’s robbery homicide division, that it would take place through the night and “continue over the coming days”.

Hamilton said the police are not seeking anyone as a suspect or a person of interest in the case until they’ve moved forward in the investigation.

He declined to confirm the identities of the two people found dead, saying that information would come from the city’s county coroner.

He added that investigators are waiting for a warrant to search the home.

“We’re waiting for the legal process to move forward. We have to obtain a search warrant for the residence. Once that is complied with, we will be conducting a full crime scene investigation on the interior and exterior of the residence and the surrounding neighborhood.”

Paramedics were dispatched to the residence at roughly 3:30 p.m., and Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived minutes later for an “ambulance death investigation.”

A sizable police presence was observed outside the home Sunday evening. Neighbors told NBC News that Reiner and his wife lived together in the home, and property records confirmed that they own the property.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Independent.

Reiner was an American actor, film director, writer and liberal activist. He directed such films as When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men, The Princess Bride and Misery.

He first rose to prominence after playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic on the CBS series All in the Family, a role that garnered him multiple Emmy Awards.

The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner was married to photographer Michele Singer Reiner since 1989. The two met while he was directing When Harry Met Sally and had three children together.

Reiner was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner died in 2020 at age 98 and Marshall died in 2018.

Reiner was looking to distinguish himself from his “Meathead” character, and did so by directing This Is Spinal Tap, the 1984 film starring Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer that followed the fictional washed-up band Spinal Tap as they attempted to stage a comeback tour. It was a massive hit, and Reiner was particularly pleased that he shared cinematic success with his father, whose film All of Me also made many “best of” lists.

“I said, ‘Dad, has it ever been where there’s been a father and a son both have films in the top 10 in one year?’ I didn’t ever remember it,” Rob recalled to PEOPLE. “And we looked it up – nobody could remember! So we took out an ad. We were both very proud of each other, to be able to be thought of in the same way.”

Reiner then went on an incredible streak in the 1980s, directing one instant classic after another including The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally … and Stand by Me (pictured). Cast member Wil Wheaton recently told PEOPLE about how he and his castmates, then all young unknown actors, were guided by Reiner.

“Even as an adult, I have worked on sets where the director, for whatever reason, just gives you the feeling that you don’t deserve to be there. [Like,] ‘You’re lucky to be there, and just shut up and do the thing.’ Rob never did that,” he said. “Even though we were little kids, Rob pointed us in the right direction. And he had cast four kids who absolutely were our characters in extremely meaningful ways, and he let us just live, and exist and relate naturally and honestly.”

“Because I had been married for 10 years, I’d been single for 10 years and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody that gave birth to When Harry Met Sally,” he said on CNN. “I met my wife Michele, who I’ve been married to now 35 years, I met her while we were making the film, and I changed the ending.”

Reiner and Michele welcomed three more children together in the ’90s: Sons Nick and Jake and daughter Romy.

Reiner was a proud parent, and was inspired by his experience to become an advocate for early childhood eduction and universal preschool. In recent years, he spoke to The Guardian about how his own relationship with his superstar father was both inspirational and complicated when it came to his career, and he saw the same for his own kids.

“My son is 32 and my daughter’s 26. They both want careers, they’re both talented. Should I lean into it? Should I back away from it? They’re confused. I said, once they find their own path, it won’t matter. I was very conscious when I was carrying out my career that I didn’t rely on [my dad]. I didn’t ask him for money, and if you know in your heart that what you’re doing is true, you can block out all that stuff.”

Reiner’s son Nick co-wrote a 2016 film, Being Charlie, loosely based on his own experience with drug addiction starting at age 15. It follows the story of a troubled son whose dad is a former actor running for governor, and in an interview with PEOPLE at the time, Nick said that his struggles with homelessness and rehab helped inform the script.

Said Reiner at the time, “it forced us to look at what each other was going through. Anytime you get an insight into what somebody else is experiencing, it makes you understand them more. And if it’s a father-son, a child and a parent, it makes the relationship better. Our relationship is better now than it was, and it’s got places to go.”

Reiner released Spinal Tap II: The End Continues in September 2025, and spoke to PEOPLE at the time about why the time was right to revisit the film.

“It was like falling back into something that was very familiar,” he said. “We’ve all known each other even more than 40 years: you pick up where you left off, you just fall right back into it. And we don’t talk as fast as we used to, but our brains are still sharp and we start making each other laugh, and then you’re off to the races again.”

He also had a role on The Bear in 2025, and continued his activist work, including speaking up frequently against President Trump’s policies, particularly those regarding the media.

He was accompanied at the Spinal Tap II premiere by his entire family, including Nick, Jake and Romy. And he retained his sense of humor even when looking back at his legacy. As he once told The New York Times, “I could win the Nobel Prize, and the headline would read, ‘Meathead Wins Nobel.’ ”

Law enforcement sources have said the couple’s bodies were discovered with what appeared to be knife wounds.

Reiner, 78, also adopted another daughter, Tracy Reiner, with his ex-wife Penny Marshall. 

Tracy and Romy followed in their father’s footsteps, going on to be actresses themselves, with Romy’s IMDB page also describing her as a producer and writer, whose credits include You People and Voices.

Jake Reiner, though, went a different path and is a news reporter in Houston, Texas.

‘I just had a different passion, the passion for news and I found it at Syracuse University,’ he told the Houston Chronicle in 2016.

‘I didn’t get into journalism to avoid being compared to my father,’ he continued. ‘Think about it, my dad followed in his dad’s footsteps.’

Reiner was born in the Bronx to Estelle and noted writer, director and comedian Carl Reiner, who was known for creating The Dick Van Dyke Show.

He soon followed in his father’s footsteps, attending the University of California Los Angeles Film School and getting some minor roles on shows like The Andy Griffith Show, The Partridge Family and Batman in the late 1960s.

The 78-year-old had gained international fame for the critically-acclaimed films he has directed over the years – including The Sure Thing in 1985, The Princess Bride in 1987, When Harry Met Sally in 1989, American President in 1995 and A Few Good Men in 1992, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Over the course of his career, Reiner earned four nominations for Golden Globe for Best Director and three Directors Guild of America Awards.

In more recent years, Reiner has become an activist for liberal causes.

Reiner also began his writing career alongside Steve Martin on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 1960s, before becoming nationally-known for playing Michael Stivic, Archie Bunker’s liberal son-in-law on All in the Family – which was the most watched television program from 1971 through 1976. 

He was chosen for the role over actors like Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford. It seemed the producers made the right call – as Reiner wound up winning two Emmy Awards and five Golden Globe nominations for his work on the show.

He also acted in films such as Sleepless in Seattle, the First Wives Club and the Wolf of Wall Street. 

Soon, Reiner started working on the big screen as a writer, director and co-star in the mockumentary This is Spinal Tap in 1984. 

In the decade that followed, Reiner had a number of box-office hits, including Stand By Me, Misery, When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride. 

By 1987, Reiner co-founded his own production company, Castle Rock Entertainment, which released several of his films, including In the Line of Fire and Malice before it was acquired by Turner Broadcasting in 1993.

But in more recent years, Reiner had only occasional hits like The Bucket List, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

Still, Reiner defended his films.

‘I’m making the movies I want to make,’ he told the Guardian in 2008. 

‘Studios are looking for hundreds and hundreds of million dollars in profit, and you’re not going to get it with a little movie,’ Reiner explained.

‘But I came into this business to express myself and tell stories, not just churn out a product.’ 

At the same time, Reiner has become more politically active as an ardent supporter for Democratic candidates and an outspoken supporter of liberal causes.

He was also a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, even announcing in 2021 that he was working on a 10 to 13-episode television project covering Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Met Office has warned of heavy rain today leading to travel disruption and flooding – which could cause damage to buildings, power cuts and ‘danger to life’

The Met Office has urged Brits in 15 areas to prepare an “emergency” kit ahead of heavy rainfall due to sweep parts of the UK today.

An amber weather warning is in place from 4am this morning until 9pm tonight for south Wales, as heavy rain could lead to travel disruption and flooding in some areas. With around 100mm of rain expected the Met Office issued some important advice for residents in the area.

The weather conditions are likely to cause flooding to homes and businesses and delays or cancellations to train and bus services. The heavy rain expected can make driving difficult and result in some road closures.

The Met Office said there is “a good chance some communities will be cut off by flooded roads” and could experience power cuts. There is also a ‘danger to life’ wanring in place due to the likelihood of fast flowing or deep floodwater.

A message on the Met Office website reads: “Heavy rain is expected across parts of south and southwest Wales during Monday. 50-80 mm of rain is likely to fall quite widely with some places seeing close to 100 mm. Given the recent wet weather and saturated ground, the likelihood of impacts is higher.”

The Met office has urged Brits to prepare a ‘flood kit’ which includes specific items which could save you from loss or damage due to flooding to your home or business. Floodwater can cause catastrophic damage to properties and can end up costing thousands in repairs in severe cases.

• In your flood kit have: insurance and any other important documents; a torch & spare batteries; a first aid kit, prescription medicines and supplies for looking after your family members or pets; and warm, waterproof clothes, blankets, food and water.
