Former Delta State gubernatorial aspirant and environmental advocate, Sunny Onuesoke, has warned that the Niger Delta may be forced into a complete shift away from wood-based roofing within the next decade if urgent measures are not taken to curb the region’s alarming rate of deforestation.

Onuesoke spoke during an environmental sustainability engagement in Warri, where he lamented the continued destruction of forests through illegal logging, unchecked timber exportation, pipeline repairs, land clearing for real estate expansion, and burning of bushes for agriculture activities that collectively deplete the green cover that once defined the Niger Delta.

According to recent environmental impact assessments, Nigeria loses between 350,000 and 400,000 hectares of forest every year, with a significant portion of that loss occurring in the Niger Delta, one of the most biodiverse wetland regions in Africa.

Analysts predict that at the current trend, Nigeria’s remaining natural forests could be significantly degraded by 2035, pushing the cost of timber beyond the reach of low and middle-income home builders.

“If we continue like this, wood as a roofing material will become both unavailable and unaffordable. Families who rely on timber for local construction will suffer. Our builders will struggle. The ecosystem services that sustain fishing and farming already under threat will collapse further,” Onuesoke stated.

He blamed the growing timber scarcity on a combination of poor enforcement, weak environmental compliance, lack of reforestation programs, and the rising influence of black-market timber networks operating without accountability.

Onuesoke urged governments at all levels to take decisive action by banning uncontrolled logging and exportation of unprocessed timber, enforcing mandatory replanting for every tree cut, funding community-based forest monitoring, promoting alternative roofing materials and green-building incentives, reintroducing environmental education in primary and secondary schools

He also appealed to builders, carpenters, and local timber unions to embrace innovation, sustainable sourcing, and partnerships that encourage regeneration rather than depletion.

“The Niger Delta should not be remembered as the region that harvested its future for quick profit, Onuesoke warned.

“We still have time to reverse the trend but the window is closing fast. Environmental preservation is not activism—it is a survival strategy.”

Onuesoke reiterated that environmental sustainability must rise above politics and become a binding commitment from government, traditional institutions, investors, and community stakeholders if the Niger Delta is to avoid a roofing-material crisis that will deepen housing challenges and increase the cost of living for millions.

The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has defended his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying the move is in the interest and progress of Rivers State.

The governor spoke on Friday at the Government House in Port Harcourt while receiving his APC membership card from the state party chairman, Tony Okocha.

Fubara reiterated that his switch to the APC was driven by what he believes will benefit the state’s development.

“It is a spiritual assignment because if you had listened to me when I took this decision, it was for the safety, protection, progress, and development of our dear state. We can’t be doing our own here, and we will be going on a different course with the federal government, the ruling party.

“There is every reason to support Mr President. If not for any other thing, as a person, I know the sacrifice he has made to ensure that we still stand as a government.

“So I took this decision as my own return favour, my own clearing the bush to ensure that his reelection come 2027 will be easy, smooth in this state. Now that we are all in one party, because I believe that we have always been with him, but maybe from different flats.

“We are now inside one flat. The job is easy to continue what we have promised, Mr President. Let me thank the national executive, the state Chairman who is representing the National Chairman. I want to assure you, you can take my message back to him.

“We will do everything to keep APC as the main and active progressive party in Rivers State. We are not only going to stop there, but it is my responsibility from this minute to ensure that the party is properly taken care of.

“I will assure you here that every need of the executive, every need of the party in this state, becomes my responsibility.”

The Enugu State government has comnended the Organused Private Sector, OPS, for its contribution in endearing ease of doing business and business growth in the state, emphasising on the need to consolidate on the gains in the year 2026 and others ahead.

The above commendation was brought to the fore during a one-day engagement between the officials of Enugu state government and some heads of private enterprises stationed in Enugu state, held at Enugu State Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA) building, Old Trade fair Complex,on Thursday, December 11th, 2025.

The stakeholders meeting tagged, ‘Enugu State Enabling Reforms Action Plan(BERAP), Private Sector Engagement Sessions,’ dwelt on topics and contributions that will enable the state government improve on policies that will improve ease of doing business in Enugu state, thereby making Enugu state a destination point for investors.

The State Commissioner for Commerce,Trade and Investments, Dr Sam. Ogbu Nwobodo, stressed that his ministry targets a reform agenda that will enable the state government realise its dream of boosting the state Growth Domestic Product(,GDP) from $4.4billion dollars to &30 billion dollars in the next few years .

To achieve this result, he said, the inputs of the Organised Private Sector operators are very important in the build up to the recommendations.

He recalled the fact that similar contributions since the past three years of continous engagement with the Organised Private Sector recorded tremendous success in lifting Enugu state from it’s last position of 36th out of 37th states in Nigeria including the FCT to it present position of 6th out of the 36th states in ease of doing business.

On his part, a consultant, Mr David Uzodike, disclosed that Enugu state is among the first three states in Nigeria with a robust and qualitative regulatory ownership of lands with the government carrying the communities along, stating it is a sureway to engage communities harmoniously in providing lands for agriculture and other Investments.

He emphasised the commitment of Governor Peter Mbah led administration in facilitating Certificate of Ownership (CofOs) to intending investors and also ending the disparity against the female gender on issues of land acquisition in the state.

In one of the interactive sessions, the business community was also enlightened on the processes of getting quick dispensation of justice, without seeking the services of a lawyer, when encumbered with commercial disputes.

Allegations of multiple taxation on the side of the state government were also dispelled, with a clarification that the state government has since adopted a system of articulating all the business taxes in one document and the person will pay to only one Central unit, reflected in the tax document.

Speaking to newsmen thereafter on the gains of the engagement, the representative of Manufactures Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mrs Ijeoma Ezeasor, commended Enugu state government for taking the lead among states in the South East zone, delving on ease of doing business.

However, she advised the state government to go extra miles in curtailing the actions of Non State Actors, who indulge in extorting the Manufacturers and Products providers at several check points and boundaries across the state, by collecting unjust levies from them.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Borno State has announced that it will withdraw from the state’s local government elections scheduled for Saturday, December 13.

The party cited a lack of confidence in the electoral commission and the high costs of expression of interest and nomination forms as reasons for its decision.

In a statement on Friday, PDP’s state Publicity Secretary, Amos Adziba, said the decision was made during a recent State Executive Committee, SEC, meeting in Maiduguri.

The statement Titled “Why We’re Boycotting Borno LG Polls,” accused the Borno State Independent Electoral Commission, BOSIEC, of failing to give opposition parties adequate assurance of the elections’ credibility and fairness.

“The leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Borno State has disclosed that it won’t participate in the December 13th, 2025 local government elections in the state because of high cost of expression of interest and nomination forms as well as lack of trust in the electoral body,” the statement read.

“The decision was reached at the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held in Maiduguri, the state capital,” it added.

In a communique following the meeting, Adziba outlined several reasons for the party’s withdrawal, citing a lack of trust in BOSIEC and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He said, “The BOSIEC did not give the opposition parties substantial reasons to build confidence in the credibility and fairness of the election.”

He further stated that “PDP alleged that the state electoral body is unmindful of the harsh prevailing economic challenges in the country by demanding high purchase of expression of interest and nomination forms.”

The party also expressed concern over the government’s failure to amend the electoral bill to enable councilor results to be declared at the ward level and chairmanship results at local government headquarters.

“Since the state government has not amended the bill, it means that it will be business as usual for the APC to ambush other political parties with electoral frauds,” he said.

Rev Ezekiel Dachomo has assured displaced and persecuted Christian communities in Nigeria that “help is on the way,” following the high-profile visit of a United States Congressional delegation to Benue State.

Dachomo, a Plateau State pastor and human-rights advocate known for leading the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) and documenting violence across the Middle Belt, said the renewed international attention offers hope after years of persistent attacks.

Reacting to comments by U.S. Congressman Riley M. Moore of West Virginia, who recently led a delegation of American lawmakers to Nigeria, the cleric said he has long endured criticism for “standing on the side of truth” but believes the tide is beginning to turn.

“Many names have been spoken against me for standing on the side of truth.”

“Even when some try to suppress it, truth cannot be hidden forever. My Facebook account may have been taken down for raising concerns, but the light of truth will always prevail. Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help is on the way,” he said.

His remarks followed Moore’s detailed post on X late Thursday, in which the congressman shared findings from the delegation’s trip to Benue.

According to Moore, the team met with Catholic Bishops Wilfred Anagbe and Stephen Dugu, the Tor Tiv, and several internally displaced persons who recounted repeated attacks on their communities.

He said the group heard “heartbreaking stories,” including that of a woman who witnessed the killing of five of her children, describing the violence as part of a “horrific genocidal campaign” allegedly carried out by extremist elements within Fulani communities.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. It will stay with me the rest of my life,” Moore wrote.

He added that he is preparing a report for the United States’ head of state and head of government, outlining recommendations for coordinated action with the Nigerian government to protect vulnerable communities and tackle ongoing terrorist threats.

Dachomo, who has consistently spoken out on attacks targeting Christian populations in the Middle Belt, said Moore’s comments and his interview on U.S. television show that global awareness of the crisis is finally growing.

The Supreme Court has revoked the pardon previously granted by President Bola Tinubu to Abuja-based housewife Maryam Sanda, who was convicted for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello.

Sanda was originally sentenced to death by hanging in 2020 following a domestic dispute that resulted in her husband’s de@th.

President Tinubu had recently reduced Sanda’s sentence to 12 years’ imprisonment on compassionate grounds, according to the presidency.

In a judgement delivered on Friday, the Supreme Court, in a four-to-one split decision, affirmed the original death sentence.

The Apex Court resolved all issues raised in Sanda’s appeal and dismissed it as being without merit. Justice Moore Adumein, delivering the lead judgment, held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt as required, adding that the Court of Appeal was correct to affirm the trial court’s judgment.

In other news…. Rev. Chidiebere Amakaeze’s siblings have publicly disputed his claims against nightclub mogul Obi Cubana, insisting that the businessman has never owed them anything.

In a video that has gone viral, the family stated that Cubana has been supporting them financially for years. Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Nwem Amakaeze, the immediate younger brother, highlighted that Cubana has consistently met all obligations regarding the Wuse 2 property, often exceeding expectations.

“Let it be clear that Obi Cubana does not owe the Amakaeze family. We are six surviving children, five of whom remain united. Only our eldest brother chose to act independently. Even so, Obinna continues to assist him generously,” he said.

Nwem accused Rev. Chidiebere of misrepresenting himself in 2018 as the sole next-of-kin to obtain exclusive administrative control of the family estate, describing the act as “wickedness of the highest order.”

He explained, “My brother tries to make it seem like his disputes with Obi Cubana are on behalf of the family, but that is untrue. In 2018, he swore in an Abuja Federal High Court affidavit that he was the only surviving next-of-kin and son of Rev. Michael Nwobi Amakaeze, securing a sole letter of administration under false pretenses. There’s no need for sentimentality here.”

Nwem also accused his brother of creating conflicts, filing questionable petitions, and promoting social media attacks against Cubana.

“The narrative that Obi is trying to take over someone’s property is false. Obi simply stated that all siblings should be included in any settlement. He grew up with us, considers us friends, and treats us as family. The issues are internal. I haven’t had contact with my brother in 10 years; all I’ve received are threats and insults. Obi is only asking that any settlement involve everyone,” he added.

Their eldest sister, Adaolisa Amakaeze, voiced her support for Cubana in another video, saying he has cared for the family and covered rent as the property’s caretaker, stressing that he does not owe anything and should not be evicted.

This comes after court sheriffs in Abuja executed an eviction order on December 9, 2025, for Plot 81, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, the former Cubana Lounge, transferring control to businessman Collins Onwuzulike.

Rev. Chidiebere claimed he sold the property to Onwuzulike for N2 billion, a claim his siblings strongly reject.

The outlook, jointly signed by the company’s chief executive and chief financial officer, marks the company’s first official guidance for the new financial year 2026 and suggests a modest target when compared with the N13 billion pre-tax profit reported in similar period of 2025.

If realised, the projection will place Geregu on track for an improved year-on-year earnings performance.

Geregu’s Q1 2026 forecast shows the company expects:

• Profit before tax of N17.06 billion, supported by continued strong revenue performance and tight cost control. The company projects:
• Revenue figure of N57.12 billion, significantly higher than the levels seen in the early quarters of 2025, suggesting confidence in energy demand growth and improved plant availability going into 2026.

The Q1 2026 projection includes a gross profit of N22.88 billion, after accounting for a cost of sales of N34.24 billion. This margin aligns with the company’s improving operating efficiency seen in 2025, particularly during Q2 when a stronger capacity-charge performance and steady energy sales helped lift gross profit to N23.75 billion.

Despite an expected N2.25 billion impairment loss on financial assets, the company projects its operating profit to reach N18.12 billion, demonstrating resilience in its core business.

Operational health and cost discipline 

Operational sustainability remains one of Geregu’s strongest anchors. The forecast shows administrative expenses at N2.51 billion, consistent with past quarters and indicative of disciplined overhead management. Finance income of N1.14 billion and finance costs of N2.20 billion leave a net finance cost of N1.06 billion, a manageable burden considering the company’s expected operating profit strength.

On the cash-flow front, Geregu anticipates N21.66 billion in net cash generated from operating activities, supported by strong receipts from energy and capacity charges totalling N57.78 billion.

After taxes and supplier payments, the company expects to close the quarter with N46.68 billion in cash, up from N32.8 billion at the start of the year.

Although the company plans bond repayments totalling N6.35 billion and interest payments of N1.95 billion, cash flows remain positive due to healthy operating inflows and moderate capital expenditure.

Outlook 

With a Q1 2026 pre-tax profit projection of N17.06 billion, Geregu Power is positioning for another year of robust profitability.

Continued revenue growth, strong operating performance, and disciplined cost management will be central to meeting or surpassing its targets. Investors will be watching how these factors evolve as the company enters the new financial year.
