Brown University reports two dead, eight injured in US school shooting | Gun Violence News
Mayor Brett Smiley of Providence, Rhode Island, has confirmed that two people have been killed and eight more are critically injured after an active shooter was reported on the campus of Brown University.
Exams were under way on Saturday when the shooting began on the Ivy League campus in the United States.

The suspect remains at large, according to Rhode Island officials. They described the suspect as a man dressed in black who left the scene on foot, and they added that no weapons had been recovered.
At a news conference afterwards, Smiley said that university leaders became aware of the shooting at about 4:05pm local time (21:05 GMT), when a 911 call was received by emergency responders.
“I can confirm that there are two individuals who have died this afternoon, and there are another eight in critical status, though stable, at Rhode Island Hospital,” Smiley said.
“Those are the only injuries or casualties that we know at this time,” he added. “ But as I mentioned – and it’s important to remind folks – these numbers may change. We are still in the early hours.”
Smiley declined to identify the shooting victims, emphasising that the investigation was ongoing.
At approximately 4:22pm local time (21:22 GMT) on Saturday, the university issued an emergency update that there was a gunman near the Barus and Holley engineering and physics lab building.
“Lock doors, silence phones and stay hidden until further notice,” the university said in its update.
“Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself.”
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement swept the building, according to Providence police chief Timothy O’Hara.
“They did a systematic search of the building. However, no suspect was located at that time,” O’Hara said. “They were able to clear that building and provide a safe place for all of the students and faculty and workers that were in that building to meet at.”
He added that it is not clear yet how the suspect entered the building, but that he exited onto Hope Street.
At 5:27pm local time (22:27 GMT), Brown University reported that shots had been fired near Governor Street, approximately two blocks away from the engineering and physics lab.
In the lead-up to the news conference, it was unclear if law enforcement had detained a suspect, as conflicting reports circulated online.
The university, for instance, had to withdraw an early announcement that a suspect had been apprehended, writing, “Police do not have a suspect in custody and continue to search for suspect(s).”
US President Donald Trump published a similar retraction on his online platform, Truth Social, after erroneously posting at about 5:44pm (22:44 GMT) that the suspect was in custody.
“I have been briefed on the shooting that took place at Brown University in Rhode Island,” Trump also wrote. “The FBI is on the scene.”
Law enforcement remains on site at the university. The incident is currently under investigation.
Saturday’s shooting is the second major incident of gun violence on a university campus this week.
Just four days ago, on December 9, Kentucky State University in the southern city of Frankfort also experienced gunfire on campus, killing one student and leaving a second critically injured. The suspect in that case was identified as Jacob Lee Bard, the parent of a student at the school.
The risk of gun violence has transformed the academic experience in the US, with many schools holding preparedness drills for active shooter situations.
“This is just the reality of life in America. From first graders to middle schoolers to high schoolers to students in college, they do active shooting drills. So they know how to do this,” Al Jazeera correspondent Patty Culhane said from Maryland.
“What they tell them is: Avoid. Deny. Defend,” she added, citing a popular school safety slogan.
“Avoid” stands for staying away from danger. “Deny” is meant as advice if escape is not possible: Victims are advised to find shelter, stay out of sight, and use materials to create barricades, if necessary.
“Defend” is the final step: If avoiding or denying the danger is not possible, the motto advises those in a violent situation to use whatever they can to defend themselves from harm.
Mass shootings are a relatively common threat in the US.
The Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks shootings in the US, has documented at least 389 mass shootings this year alone. It defines mass shootings as incidents where four or more people are shot or killed, not including the perpetrator.
Schools are often a target. The nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety reports that there have been 154 incidents of gunfire on school campuses in 2025. Those incidents resulted in 49 deaths and 135 injuries.
Saturday’s shooting comes as the academic semester winds down at Brown University. The last day of classes for the fall semester was on Thursday, and the school is in its final examination period until December 20.
At the news conference, school officials said that exams had been under way on Saturday between 2pm and 5pm (19:00 GMT and 22:00 GMT).
The seventh-oldest university in the US, Brown is considered part of the prestigious Ivy League, a cluster of private research colleges in the Northeast. Its student body numbers 11,005, according to its website.
Mayor Smiley encouraged community members to reach out to one another as the city grapples with the aftermath of Saturday’s deadly shooting.
“ It’s going to be a difficult rest of the day, difficult weeks and months ahead as this community heals,” he said. “Each and every one of us can play a small role in that, in supporting one’s neighbour.”
Governor Dan McKee said he had been in touch with the White House, as well as other state governors who had experienced similar shootings in recent years.
“ The unthinkable has happened,” McKee said. “ Our thoughts go out to those who have been impacted by this in any way, and we’ll continue to provide assistance to the authorities here in Providence as well as statewide.”
Trump encouraged people to pray for the Brown community.

The New South Wales Police Force confirmed on X that ten people were killed in the shooting, including one of the suspected gunmen. The second alleged shooter is in critical condition.

Beachgoers at Bondi Beach flee the scene after a mass shooting on Sunday that has left at least 10 people dead.
New South Wales Police have confirmed that one suspect is among the dead, while a second alleged gunman is in police custody in a critical condition.
The force advised anyone at the scene to “take shelter” and others to avoid the area.
A New South Wales Ambulance spokesperson said: “We have got more than 40 resources there including helicopter and road crews and have treated multiple patients at the scene. We have so far transported 13 patients to various hospitals in Sydney.”
Prime minister Anthony Albanese said “the scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing”.

In March 2023, Taylor Watts was diagnosed with colon cancer following a sharp decline in her health.
“About a year before the official diagnosis, she started doing things that were considered out of character,” her husband, Mark Joseph Brisson Jr., tells PEOPLE exclusively. “The cancer was having an effect on her brain chemistry, but we had no idea at the time.”
His wife, fiercely independent and at times admittedly “stubborn,” rarely shared her feelings out loud, making it difficult for anyone, including him, to truly know how she was doing mentally or physically.

“It was rare for Taylor to open up, and while some might consider that a personality flaw, to those closest to her it was an accepted and endearing quality,” he says.
It was around the same time that the two faced a period of strain in their relationship and decided to take time apart.
However, as Watts’ condition worsened, she kept the true severity to herself until even the simple act of getting out of bed became a struggle.
Then, one day, during their time apart, she reached out to her husband for help getting to the ER.
“I immediately drove to her apartment and had to physically carry her from her bed to the car,” Brisson recalls. “This was when I realized things must be much worse than any of us could imagine. She was ghost white, extremely weak and increasingly frail.”
Brisson admits, however, that he never imagined the diagnosis looming. Weeks later, a biopsy confirmed that a mass found in her colon was, in fact, cancer.

“Supporting Taylor during her battle in the years to follow was difficult,” Brisson admits. “That stubborn spirit was magnified in her. The best way to support her was to let her do what Taylor wanted to do. She was the captain of her own ship, and we were along for the ride.”
Determined to face her illness on her own terms, Watts refused special treatment or outside assistance. Her mom was the only person she fully allowed into her world, eventually moving in with her mother, who lived closer to the treatment center.
“Our son also lived there so they could have as much time together as possible before she passed,” Brisson tells PEOPLE.
“Taylor relied and trusted in her mother to help her carry the weight of her illness, and rightly so. She is a force of a woman,” Brisson shares. “As much as I wanted to be the hero in my wife’s story, I could not be. I had to learn to love her from afar.”
Brisson notes that their relationship “was complicated,” and while they remained married, they “didn’t have a typical marriage.”
“Our marriage turned into more of a companionship with no loss of love, and it worked for us,” he shares. “We knew she wasn’t going to survive this from the start, so a lot of decisions were made that I don’t expect anyone to understand. An unfortunate position we were put in because of a horrible disease.”
Unfortunately, less than two and a half years later, in September 2025, Watts died at the age of 32, leaving her husband and their young son, Forrest, with gaping holes in their hearts.
“Forrest was there in the hospice room along with myself during her final hours,” Brisson recalls. “The decision to let him see his mother in that way was a decision not made lightly.”

And although saying goodbye provided a measure of closure for his son, the 7-year-old has understandably struggled to cope with the unimaginable loss.
“He sleeps with her pillow, the same pillow he shared with her in the hospice bed. He has a box that he continues to fill with things that were hers,” Brisson shares.
“He’s dealing with death right now in his own way. I feel the best thing I can do for him is to allow him a safe place to express his grief, however he needs to.”
In an attempt to process his grief and help his son do the same, Brisson embraced a creative outlet that had always been close to his heart: songwriting.
“What better way, I thought, to honor her than write this song for her, our son, and for myself and ultimately anyone going through loss,” he says.
The song, titled ‘The Prettiest Little Angel,’ drew inspiration from the questions his son asked while navigating grief, such as whether his mom listens to his prayers, if she now has a “perfect set of wings,” or if she hears him when he sings.
The deeply emotional song, which the father-son duo posted on TikTok, has become a heartfelt reflection of their strong bond and ongoing healing journey.
“It was extremely difficult to get through it without crying at first,” Brisson says. “Now we sing it to each other randomly at times throughout the day, and we sing it happily thinking about Taylor.”

While writing the song allowed the duo to give voice to the pain they were experiencing together, Brisson never anticipated the impact it would have on thousands of strangers online.
“Sharing the song has made me realize that we are far from alone. The majority of us have experienced loss in some way. Death knows no age, and it’s something none of us can avoid,” he tells PEOPLE.
“The question is, what’s next? How the song has helped me with the ‘what’s next’ is a whole song of its own.”

Ten people, including children, are dead after two gunmen armed with rifles opened fire at Bondi Beach where a Jewish holiday celebration was unfolding on Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses said two men stepped out of a vehicle on Campbell Parade, near Bondi Pavilion, and opened fire about 6.40pm on Sunday with footage showing blast after blast on the tourist strip. Some witnesses report more than 30 shots.
Video and photos taken by a Daily Mail photographer show a gunman opening fire from an elevated bridge using a large rifle.
One gunman has been shot dead. The other one was also shot, and is now in custody.
A festival, Chanukah by the Sea, advertised as a night of family fun, was taking place, with children attending the event when the gunmen opened fire.
An ambulance spokeswoman confirmed to Daily Mail that 13 patients have so far been transported to various hospitals around Sydney.
She said 40 units – including ambulances, intensive care specialists, and 3 helicopters are on the scene. The number of units are steadily increasing.
NSW Police are urging people to avoid the area.

A witness told Daily Mail: ‘These men pulled over their car put a black flag with an emblem on the windshield then walked over the footbridge and started firing.’
Tim Hamilton was with friends in North Bondi when he thought he heard a car backfiring but ‘more violent than that, like a little bit louder’.
‘I stood up and looked over and then I just saw people on the beach running really fast away from that area, like the Bondi Pavilion but the north side of it,’ he told Daily Mail.
He added that people were hiding behind the concrete wall and running into the ocean to try and stay clear of the shooters.
Tim said he did not receive an emergency alert on his phone following the incident.
‘When we were walking home, we saw this guy who was up at Speedo Cafe, which is kind of near the North Bondi grass, and he was on the pavement bleeding.
‘That was quite far away from where the shooters were. So I think one of the bullets must have travelled quite far. There were people helping him.’
The beach was crowded with hundreds of tourists and locals at the end of a 30C summer day.

Kirk Gehri, a local who was at Depot in Bondi when the shooting took place, said that it was chaos.
‘They were just shooting openly at that bridge,’ he said.
‘I saw some people were running away when I first arrived.’
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: ‘We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi.
‘We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police.’
Police also confirmed there was no incident at Dover Heights, where a similar Chanukah event was expected to be held.
‘Please do NOT share unconfirmed rumours,’ it said.

Police are responding to “shocking and distressing” scenes at Sydney’s Bondi Beach after reports of multiple shots being fired.
New South Wales police said two people are in custody at Bondi Beach but added the operation is ongoing.
“We continue to urge people to avoid the area. Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines,” the force said on social media.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident is “shocking and distressing” and that emergency services are on the scene working to save lives.
“I saw at least 10 people on the ground and blood everywhere,” 30-year-old local Harry Wilson, who witnessed the shooting, told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi. We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police,” a spokesperson for the prime minister said.

Sky News correspondent Nicole Johnston, in Sydney, said she has seen some of the graphic video that is now circulating on social media.
“It is graphic and it is shocking. You can see two men, active shooters, firing from a pedestrian bridge right at Bondi Beach,” she tells Sky News.
“There’s also video of injured people on the ground. They’re receiving medical treatment. There is blood on the ground. So clearly that have been sort of at least a number of injured people there.”
Sky News has not yet been unable to verify video circulating on social media.

Police in Australia say they are responding to a developing incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach after media outlets reported a shooting incident.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported shots at the beach on Sunday, saying multiple people had been injured. Television networks Sky and ABC aired footage showing people lying on the ground.
The New South Wales (NSW) police said two people were in custody, adding that the operation was ongoing.
“Anyone at the scene should take shelter,” they posted on X, calling on the public to avoid the area.
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government was aware “of an active security situation in Bondi”.
“We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police,” said the spokesperson.

Six people rushed to hospital after Bondi shooting

The NSW Ambulance service has confirmed that six people have been taken to local hospitals following a shooting incident at Bondi beach.
An ambulance spokesperson could not say the nature of the injuries or the condition of the people taken to hospitals, but that ambulance staff had been treating people on the scene with gunshot injuries.
The service was called to area at 6.45pm to reports of multiple people shot, the spokesperson said. There were 25 units at the scene, including helicopters and intensive care units.
Four people had been taken to St Vincent’s hospital, one person had been taken to Royal Prince Alfred hospital and another to St George hospital.

There was a Hanukah event on at Bondi beach tonight. A listing describing the event said it was set to take place from 5pm to 9pm at the Bondi Park playground, with free admission.
The event was called Chanukah By The Sea and it was hosted by the Chabad of Bondi.
Sunday was the first day of the Jewish festival Hanukkah.
“Join Chabad of Bondi for our Annual Chanukah Festival as We Celebrate Jewish Life by lighting up the Iconic Bondi Beach,” an advertisement for the event states.

A NSW police spokesperson has told the Guardian they have received “multiple calls” from the public about shooting in the Bondi area.
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said there had “definitely been a shooting in the area”, but that the situation was developing rapidly. They said:
We have many, many units in the area. We are definitely treating multiple people and have multiple vehicles [responding].
The ambulance service received their first calls for assistance just before 7pm. Incidents were centred on the Queen Elizabeth Drive area, the ambulance spokesperson added.

Five men have been arrested in Germany suspected of being involved in a plot to drive a vehicle into people at a Christmas market.
Three Moroccans, an Egyptian and a Syrian were detained on Friday over the plan to target a market in the southern Bavarian state. Authorities said they suspected an “Islamist motive”.
Prosecutors said the Egyptian – a 56-year-old – was alleged to have “called for a vehicle attack… with the aim of killing or injuring as many people as possible”. The Moroccans allegedly agreed to carry out the attack.
Officials in Germany have been on high alert after previous attacks at Christmas markets, including in Magdeburg last December that killed six people.
Authorities did not say when the planned attack was supposed to take place or which market was the target, though said they believed it to be one in the Dingolfing-Landau area, north east of Munich.
German newspaper Bild reported the Egyptian man was an imam at a mosque in the area.
Police said the Moroccan men – aged 30, 28 and 22 – were arrested accused of having agreed to commit murder, while the Syrian man, a 37-year-old, was accused of encouraging the suspects “in their decision to commit the crime”.
The five suspects appeared before a magistrate on Saturday and remain in custody.
Joachim Herrmann, Bavaria’s state interior minister, told Bild the “excellent cooperation between our security services” had helped to prevent “a potentially Islamist-motivated attack”.
Christmas markets are popular festive attractions throughout Germany, frequently attracting large crowds and significant tourism.
Security at events has been increased in recent years, since an attack in Berlin in 2016 when a man drove a lorry into a market crowd, killing 12 people.
