Pittsburgh Steelers star DK Metcalf’s suspension could prove to be extremely expensive for the wide receiver, if upheld by the NFL. 

Metcalf was slapped with a two-game suspension on Monday after he was caught taking a swing at a Lions fan during Sunday’s victory in Detroit.

The wide out was found to have violated league policy specifying ‘players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day.’ 

Metcalf intends to appeal the punishment, but if it is upheld, it could come at an eye-watering cost to the 28-year-old. 

Based on his contract with the Steelers, the suspension would void not only the rest of his salary for this season, but also $45million he is owed in future guaranteed money, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. 

Metcalf is reported owed $25m fully guaranteed in 2026 and $20m guarantee for injury in 2027.

He will miss the remainder of the rest of the season, including the team’s games in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns and Week 18 against the Baltimore Ravens. 

Metcalf will be eligible to return to the Steelers active roster on Monday, January 5, following the remaining two games of the regular season.

He will lose about $555,000 in salary as a result of the two-game ban but, if upheld, the financial penalty could be far worse than that. 

Metcalf signed a four-year, $132 million contract extension with the Steelers in March after he was traded from the Seattle Seahawks. 

CBS cameras caught Metcalf jawing with a man in a blue wig during the second quarter before grabbing the fan by his shirt collar and punching at his face. Metcalf only made minimal contact, if any, with his swing. 

At the time, commentator Jim Nantz remarked: ‘That is not going to have great consequences for the Steelers and Metcalf.’ 

The former Ole Miss star did not discuss the incident with reporters after Sunday’s controversial win in Detroit, but Metcalf and the fan do have a shared history dating back to his time in Seattle. According to NFL Network, Metcalf reported the same fan to Seahawks security in 2024.

As reported by NFL Network, Metcalf claimed on Sunday he heard that fan use a derogatory term to describe his mother and called the receiver ‘something we both know you don’t call a black man.’

However, the fan, identified by the Detroit Free Press to be Ryan Kennedy, strongly denied those allegations.

A statement from his lawyer on Monday said that Kennedy ‘categorically denies using… any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur.’

The statement continued: ‘At no point before, during, or after the incident did Mr. Kennedy use racial slurs or hate speech of any kind. The claims suggesting otherwise are untrue and are not supported by video evidence, eyewitness accounts, or any contemporaneous reporting.’

Kennedy’s lawyer claimed that, ‘since these false statements began circulating,’ his client ‘has been subjected to harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence, creating serious concern for his and his family’s personal safety and well-being.’

The statement concluded: ‘Mr. Kennedy is a lifelong Detroit Lions football fan who attended the game lawfully and never anticipated becoming the subject of national attention, much less false accusations of racism. He respects the game, the players, and fellow fans – and rejects hate and discrimination in all forms.’

Kennedy claimed to the Free Press that he had called Metcalf by his full name -DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf – which triggered the furious outburst from the NFL star. 

‘Like everyone’s talking to me,’ he said before the final whistle. ‘I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.’ 

‘He doesn’t like his government name,’ Kennedy said. ‘I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked.’

Kennedy added: ‘My words don’t matter because it was on camera.’

The Free Press reported that the Lions threw the fan out of the game, adding that officials from the team were speaking to Kennedy about the incident.

In a statement to the Detroit Free Press, a league spokesperson said officials could not eject Metcalf in that situation: ‘There was no flag on the field, so [the league office in New York] cannot weigh in with regard to a potential disqualification.’

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has expressed disappointment over the absence of teammate Benjamin Fredrick from Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria begin their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on Tuesday evening, but Fredrick will miss the tournament after sustaining an injury that has ruled him out for the duration.

Speaking to reporters in Morocco ahead of the opener, the Super Eagles defender said the setback was difficult to take, especially given the stage the competition offers.

“No, I’ve not spoken to him. But it is very upsetting,” the Fulham player said of Fredrick’s absence from the team.

“I feel like it would’ve been amazing for Fredrick to showcase his talent on this AFCON stage.

“I just wish him a speedy recovery, and hopefully, he can be back with us in no time.”

Fredrick, who is on loan at Belgian Pro League club Dender EH from Brentford, had been hoping to make his tournament debut before injury stopped him.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has moved to calm fears over Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of the Group stage opener.

Chelle is without three defenders following the withdrawals of William Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina and Fredrick.

Naija News reports that Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football after Nigeria’s provisional AFCON squad was released, while Aina is currently undergoing rehabilitation from a hamstring injury sustained against South Africa in a World Cup qualifier. Fredrick’s injury will keep him sidelined throughout the tournament.

Despite the absentees, Chelle insisted he remains confident in the players available to him.

“No, I’m not worried,” Chelle told reporters at the pre-match press conference ahead of the Tanzania clash when asked about the absence of the three players.

“I trust my players. Of course, I’d prefer these guys [Troost-Ekong, Fredrick, and Aina] to be here, but now I’m with my squad, and I trust them so much.

“We have a strong defence, we’ve worked a lot on it. We are focused on our game plan and when you want to defend, it’s not only about the defenders; it’s about all the players on the pitch.”

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and Tanzania AFCON 2025 clash will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. later today, December 23.

William Troost-Ekong is backing the Super Eagles to make a positive impact at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, DAILY POST reports.

Troost-Ekong was named in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the competition but announced his retirement from international football days before the final list was unveiled by head coach, Eric Chelle.

The centre-back is confident the team will have a good outing in Morocco despite his absence.

“As our Super Eagles begin their AFCON journey today, I wish the team every success. As promised, I’ll be supporting them all the way. I believe in this group, our nation and what we can achieve,” he wrote on X.

The 32-year-old was named Player of the Tournament at the previous edition of the competition hosted by Cote d’Ivoire.

Former Nigeria international William Troost-Ekong has expressed his believe that the Super Eagles will not disappoint at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Troost-Ekong made this known while thanking Nigeria President Bola Tunibu for fulfilling his house and land pledges made to members of the Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 AFCON which he was the captain.

The former Watford also thanked the President for conferring him with the honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

“I am honoured and grateful to His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (@officialABAT ), for conferring on me the MFR national honour,” he wrote on his X handle.

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerian football fans following the national team’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, admitting that the pain and disappointment felt by supporters is fully shared by the players.

The 26-year-old forward, who is currently Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer of all time, acknowledged the magnitude of missing out on football’s biggest global tournament and described the setback as deeply painful for everyone connected to the team.

Jake Paul is facing a nine-month recovery after Anthony Joshua fractured his jaw during their heavyweight bout, it can be revealed.

Paul, 28, who banked an eye-watering £69,000 per second for the fight at Miami’s Kaseya Center, was sent crashing to the canvas in the sixth round after Joshua, 36, delivered a devastating knockout blow.

The defeat left ‘The Problem Child’ with a parasymphysis fracture on the right-hand side of his jaw, as well as a fracture to the body of the mandible. The injuries are expected to take around eight weeks to heal.

However, due to the fracture running through the roots of Paul’s teeth, he is likely to require dental implants, with the procedure expected to take place roughly three months after the fractures have healed.

Paul may then need crowns fitted to the implants – a process that typically takes a further six to seven months – meaning it could be at least nine months before the influencer-turned-boxer even regains around 90 per cent of his jaw strength.

As a result, Paul faces a prolonged spell away from the ring and is expected to return to the cruiserweight division should he wish to box again, having weighed in almost 30lbs lighter than Joshua for his most recent fight.

Paul and Joshua are understood to have evenly split a sum of £136million, meaning that for every one of the 989 seconds they were in the ring, each boxer earned a remarkable £69,000.

Joshua gave Paul credit while speaking to reporters after his victory, admitting it took him ‘a bit longer than expected’ to stop the American.

‘It wasn’t the best performance,’ he said. ‘The end goal was to get Jake Paul, pin him down and hurt him. That has been the request and that was on my mind. Took a bit longer than expected but the right hand found the destination.

‘Jake Paul has done really well tonight, I want to give him his props. He got up, time and time again. It was difficult in there for him, but he kept on trying to find a way through.’

Joshua himself gave Paul a recovery prognosis of 15 months, but it is understood that Paul’s jaw will be largely good-to-go by the end of next year.

The American shared photos of himself in hospital – where he drove himself in the aftermath of Joshua’s win to undergo surgery – but appeared to quickly pick himself up by flaunting his mega-payout on a private jet.

Surrounded by thick bundles of hundred-dollar bills and five guns, he held a gold firearm in the same hand as a lit cigar.

The seats on the plane were swathed with luxury blankets by French fashion house Hermes, and at the other end of the cabin large Louis Vuitton shopping bags were piled on top of each other.

Paul later shared a photo of his x-ray to his 29million Instagram followers, which confirmed a double fracture to his jaw.

Liverpool have confirmed that Alexander Isak has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a fracture to his left leg, dealing the club an early-season injury blow.

The Sweden international required an operation on an ankle injury which included a fractured fibula. While the Merseyside club stopped short of putting a precise timeframe on his recovery, it is understood that the 26-year-old is expected to be out for at least a few months.

Alexander Isak picked up the injury during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham. Introduced from the bench, he marked his appearance by finding the net for Arne Slot’s side, only for the moment to quickly turn sour.

The striker was injured by a challenge from Micky van de Ven immediately after striking the shot for his goal. He was unable to continue and was clearly in distress as medical staff assisted him off the pitch.

The setback is a major concern for Liverpool, particularly given Isak’s status as the club’s record signing following his £125m move in the summer. Since arriving from Newcastle in September, the forward has scored three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

The injury also extends a frustrating spell for the striker. During the summer, Isak was left out of Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia with what was described as a minor thigh problem, amid growing uncertainty over his future. He later trained alone at former club Real Sociedad before sealing his switch to Anfield on deadline day.

The Super Eagles have demanded for a bigger bonus at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations from the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, DAILY POST reports.

According to SCORENigeria, the NFF have proposed a bonus package that increases as the team progress in the tournament in Morocco.

The players are however seeking for more money from the Federation.

They believed they should get more money as the prize money has been increased.

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, announced last weekend that prize money for the winner has been increased to $10m.

Defending champions, Cote d’Ivoire went home with $7m for winning the title on home soil in 2023.

The Super Eagles received $4m for finishing as runners-up.

Former Nigerian international Benedict Akwuegbu has warned the technical crew not to depend solely on Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen for goals at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The three-time AFCON champions will be aiming to kick off their campaign today against Tanzania on a winning note before Tunisia and Uganda, respectively, in Group C.

Speaking with Footy Africa, Akwuegbu, who expressed optimism that Nigeria will excel at the tournament, urged Eric Chelle to adopt more varied tactics and a different style of play.

And if it’s true that it is the victors who get to write up history, the losers should be more careful about the material they provide. Even if it turns out that England’s players did nothing worse in Noosa than boost local bar receipts, it shouldn’t have been beyond the wit of the management to see how the trip might be interpreted.

Key himself, who did not join the trip to Noosa, could have restricted himself to the observation that – as far as he was aware – the players had enjoyed a few quiet beers as they escaped the Ashes cauldron for a few days.

But he went further than that, saying heavy drinking is ‘completely unacceptable’, and confirming England were looking into the matter.

That may have been a nod to his paymasters back at Lord’s, with ECB chairman Richard Thompson and chief executive Richard Gould understandably sensitive about stories depicting their highest-profile team as indulging in some 18-30s jolly.

Even so, his comments have not helped the perception of a side viewed by many as too loose, insufficiently willing to put in the hard yards, and out of touch with reality.

The coach then tested the supporters’ patience even more by saying after the Adelaide defeat that his team had ‘definitely improved’, when results suggest the opposite.

‘Alright on the night’ may be an attitude that works for a naturally gifted cricketer like Stokes, who lifts himself for the big occasion.

Key also confirmed his support for McCullum, describing him as an ‘excellent coach’. He added: ‘This is only the third series we’ve lost in four years. His win record is very good as well.

‘Clearly we’ve mucked up on the big occasions, whether that was the home Ashes series, or last summer against India, which we should have won as well. The big ones have eluded us.

‘There’s been some brilliant moments along the way. I still feel like there’s plenty of life in this whole thing now, but we have to evolve.’

The question now is whether Key is given the chance to preside over whatever evolution comes next, and that may depend on the results at Melbourne, where the fourth Test starts on Boxing Day, and at Sydney in the new year.

Some indication of progress may be central to the chances of both Key and McCullum extending their involvement, with Key insisting that – above all – England have simply been outplayed.

Members of Nigeria’s Super Eagles squad that finished second at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have officially received their national honours certificates as well as title documents for houses and land allocations promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The presentation took place on December 22, 2025, at the team’s hotel in Fez, Morocco, ahead of the Super Eagles’ opening match of the new AFCON qualifying campaign.

President Tinubu had pledged the rewards following Nigeria’s runners-up finish at the 2023 AFCON tournament held in Côte d’Ivoire in January and February 2024.

The brief ceremony was led by Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, and attended by several dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Abdul Ningi; Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu; Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale; President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau; Senior Special Assistant to the President, Mrs. Nathan-Mash; Nigerian High Commission officials; and Mallam Saleh Amadu, among others.

Speaking at the event, Dikko clarified that most players were awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON). 

However, Ahmed Musa and Victor Osimhen received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), having previously been conferred with the MON. 

Team captain William Troost-Ekong was awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his emergence as Player of the Tournament at AFCON 2023.

Dikko confirmed that all national honours, housing allocations in Abuja or Lagos, and land grants in Abuja approved by President Tinubu had been fully processed, with allocation letters issued in line with the President’s commitment to rewarding excellence and national service.

He also disclosed that similar rewards approved for the Super Falcons and Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have been processed. Title documents for houses and national honours certificates are ready for collection, while the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation are finalising the direct payment of the cash awards — equivalent to $100,000 per player — into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

Rivers United head coach Yemi Olanrewaju has expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against Katsina United.

The Port Harcourt club held their hosts to a 1-1 draw in a Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, matchday 18 encounter in Ilorin on Monday.

Azeez Falolu gave Katsina United the lead in the 23rd minute, while Stephen Manyo equalised for the hosts 15 minutes from time.

Olanrewaju declared that they deserved more from the game.

“We’re the better side despite the fact that players were tired due to long travels” Olanrewaju told reporters after the game.

“We squeezed them, just that mistake at the back which gave them the chance to score.

Rivers United extended their lead at the top of the table following the stalemate.

They top the standings with 34 points from 18 matches.

Channel Ten has come in for harsh criticism from cricket fans and even the ABC over a social media post calling for Aussies to stop talking about the Ashes.

The tweet from the account for the cancelled show The Project has gone down like a lead balloon, especially after Australia retained the urn on Sunday by beating England in the third Test in Adelaide. 

‘Now Australia has won the Ashes, can we not talk about cricket for the rest of the Summer?’ it said.

‘Thanks in advance.’

The tone-deaf post has since been slammed by fans across X.

‘Now that The Project has been cancelled, can we not talk about it for the rest of forever?’ one person wrote.

It isn’t just fans who’ve taken aim at the brainless X post.

The ABC has fired back with its own re-post of the original comment.

‘You sledge cricket talk when you’re not on the air, champion,’ the ABC’s caption read, accompanied by a photo of Aussie batter Steve Smith and England bowler Jofra Archer that was taken in the second Ashes Test.

The wording of the post referenced Smith and Archer’s war of words in that match.

Smith had hit the Lions star’s bowling for four when Archer responded by saying, ‘You only play those shots when there’s not much on the score, mate.’

The former Aussie skipper hit back with, ‘[You only] Bowl fast when there’s nothing going on, champion.’

The ABC Sport account also took aim at The Project’s controversial X post

However, the hosts will be missing two of their brightest stars when the next contest begins at the MCG on Friday. 

Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins have been ruled out of the match due to injury, with Todd Murphy tipped to replace the veteran spinner after being named in Australia’s 15-man squad on Tuesday.

Brendan Doggett and Jhye Richardson are in the running to take Cummins’ place.

STANLEY NWABALI: From late bloomer to numero uno

Stanley Nwabali’s rise to prominence remains one of the most compelling stories in recent Super Eagles history. Trusted as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Nwabali delivered a string of assured performances throughout the tournament, most memorably producing decisive saves during the semi-final penalty shootout victory over South Africa. His composure, shot-stopping ability and command of the penalty area played a crucial role as Nigeria marched to the final, eventually settling for silver.

FRANCIS UZOHO: Experienced  with a point to prove

Francis Uzoho remains one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the Super Eagles squad, despite a career that has fluctuated between promise and criticism. Born on October 28, 1998, the Omonia FC of Cyprus goalkeeper shot into global attention in November 2017 when he produced a man-of-the-match performance against Lionel Messi-led Argentina in a friendly.
