Bauchi Governor Approves N500m For Christmas Gift

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, has approved over N500 million for the purchase and distribution of Christmas food items to Christian communities across the state.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on the Distribution of Christmas Gifts, Mr. Abdon Dalla-Gin, who disclosed this during a media briefing in Bauchi on Tuesday, described the gesture as a move aimed at ensuring a joyful festive season.

Dalla-Gin said the funds were used to procure 171 bulls, 222 rams, 3,462 bags of 50-kilogramme rice and 504 cartons of 25-litre groundnut oil for distribution to beneficiaries across the state.

According to him, the beneficiaries include the five blocs of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), senior Christian leaders, religious organisations and less-privileged groups in various communities.
He added that the distribution exercise reflects the governor’s commitment to inclusiveness and religious harmony, noting that the payment of December salaries to workers has already commenced alongside other forms of support to Christian communities.

Dalla-Gin commended Governor Mohammed for the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of responsive and inclusive governance.

He assured that Christian communities in the state would continue to support the administration, stressing that the intervention would go a long way in easing the economic burden on families during the Christmas celebration.

Another Police Inspector commits suicide amid investigation into arms supply in Niger

Another serving police inspector has reportedly committed suicide following his arrest over alleged involvement in supplying arms and ammunition to bandits and other criminals in Niger State.

The development comes barely a week after DSP Isah Abdullahi, Officer in Charge of Mopol 12 Armoury at the B Division of the police command on Paikoro Road, Minna, also took his own life while under investigation for similar allegations.

The latest victim, identified as Inspector John Moses, an indigene of Shiroro Local Government Area, was arrested and detained after being implicated in the network of individuals involved in the illicit arms trade.

Reports indicate that Moses allegedly confessed to using his brother as an intermediary in the supply chain.

According to sources, Moses killed himself in the detention cell on Sunday, where he was held alongside other suspects.

He reportedly struck his head against the wall several times before collapsing and dying.

When contacted, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the case is currently being handled by the National Security Adviser (NSA).

Tension in Onitsha market as ESDA chairman escapes death, shops looted

By Nwabueze Okonkwo

ONITSHA – Chaos erupted at the Emordi Shoe Dealers Association (ESDA) in Ochanja Market, Onitsha, Anambra State, after Chairman Hon. Okwudili Anigbogu narrowly escaped a violent attack by individuals allegedly opposed to his leadership.

The attack left Anigbogu unconscious, prompting his immediate admission to Menax Hospital, Onitsha, where he is currently recuperating.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Anigbogu accused former association chairman Chief Nwabueze Umeh of orchestrating the assault. According to him, Umeh, in collaboration with the Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Markets (SPAD) and the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association (ASMATA), previously facilitated the abrupt termination of his tenure and the appointment of a caretaker committee loyal to Umeh.

Anigbogu alleged that the attack occurred as part of efforts to undermine the November 2025 election that brought him and his executive into office, which he described as transparent and credible under Onitsha South Local Government supervision.

He further claimed that while he was being rushed to the hospital, the attackers looted his shops, seizing cash and goods worth millions of naira. He detailed the losses as $85,000 and N10 million from the first shop, N8 million from the second, N6.15 million from the third, and 3,750 pairs of shoes valued between N46,000 and N55,000 each.

Anigbogu and his executive have since filed a N50 million lawsuit (Suit No. 0/390/2025) through their legal counsel, Chief Ugo Ugwunnadi, seeking compensation and a court order to nullify the appointment of the caretaker committee, which they argue was illegally constituted in violation of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA).

Reacting, Secretary to Onitsha South Local Government, Hon. Paul Onuachalla, stated that the council supervised Anigbogu’s election, but matters concerning the market now fall under the state government’s authority.

ASMATA President, Chief Humphrey Anuna, confirmed the caretaker committee’s constitution but questioned Anigbogu’s continued demands, noting he had already been replaced.

Chief Nwabueze Umeh, however, denied involvement, claiming that Anigbogu had initiated aggression at his office and that the response was a defensive action by those present. He urged Anigbogu to resolve any disputes directly with the government.

The incident has heightened tension in the market, with traders expressing fear over escalating violence and looting.

GOCIP Lauds Gombe Governor Over Sack Of Aides, Calls For Vigilance

Following the sack of his four Senior Special Assistants for assaulting a Councilor, Hon. Abdulrahman Abubakar Sheriff, the Gombe State Citizens Investigative Platform (GOCIP), has commended the state Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

A recent viral video showed an aide to the Governor assaulting the Councillor representing Shamaki Ward, Hon. Sheriff which has drawn wide condemnation.

Governor Inuwa, however, on Tuesday acted swiftly swiftly on the findings of the investigative committee by dismissing four of aids.

Reacting to the development through a statement signed on Wednesday by Comrade Ibrahim G Wala, on behalf of the Gombe State Citizens Investigative Platform (GOCIP), the group said the Governor has demonstrated a rare “listening ear” and a firm resolve to protect the rule of law.

According to the statement, This action does more than just punish misconduct; it saves the image of Gombe State from the stain of impunity and positions the governor as a leader worthy of international recognition.

“However, as we celebrate this victory for justice, we must address the root rather than just the branches. It is a known political reality that the foot soldiers of thuggery often draw their audacity from “political lurkers”—highly placed individuals close to the seat of power who may have lacked a political base in Gombe for decades, only to reappear and attempt to build structures through shortcuts and intimidation.

“We must question the authenticity of certain appointees who seemingly “appointed themselves” and pushed for the empowerment of these dismissed aides to control and intimidate senior colleagues.

“These ‘intellectual architects’ of chaos, who exploit government resources to fuel their personal ambitions, pose a long-term threat to the peace of our state. If these individuals remain quietly embedded in the system, the cycle of thuggery will only evolve into more dangerous forms.”

Comrade Wala said Governor Inuwa Yahaya has shown he has the courage to prune the tree of his administration.

“We urge him now to look deeper into the shadows at those who recruited these elements. By continuing to choose the plight of his subjects over the interests of power-hungry lurkers, the Governor is not just securing Gombe; he is building a national profile.

“History shows that a leader who can successfully sanitize his own house and uphold the dignity of the common man is often the one the nation calls upon for the highest ticket in Nigeria.

“We thank His Excellency for this decisive start and look forward to a system completely purged of those who mistake public service for private tyranny.

Tinubu Using Direct LG Allocation As Bargaining Chip

Tinubu Using Direct LG Allocation As Bargaining Chip

Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu of deliberating ignoring the implementation of the Supreme Court judgement directing Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to remit allocations direct to the Local Governments for political purpose.

Atiku in a statement issued on his verified X handle on Wednesday, alleged that Tinubu is using it as a bargaining chip to force opposition governors to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC)

“This is not delay. It is defiance. Your refusal to act is a calculated political move—using obedience to the law as a bargaining chip to force opposition governors into the APC and to keep governors within your party firmly under your control,” the former president stated.

He further said that the president has reduced the Constitution to a tool of convenience, and governance to partisan bargaining.

Atiku reminded Tinubu that the Supreme Court judgements are final, and not optional, adding that refusing to enforce any of the judgements is a breach of the Constitution and a violation of the oath he swore to Nigerians.

“Local governments are the closest arm of government to the people.

“By withholding their financial autonomy (which ironically you’ve been trumpeting as a core cardinal policy), you are not weakening governors, you are crippling communities, stalling development, and deepening poverty at the grassroots.

“Roads remain broken, health centres abandoned, salaries unpaid—not by accident, but by choice,” he stated.

Atiku said the situation does not require threats of Executive Orders but for Tinubu to simply instruct the Attorney-General of the Federation to enforce the judgement immediately.

“Anything short of this is a failure of leadership,” he added.

According to him, the president’s continued inaction shows that political control matters more than constitutional duty, “that party dominance matters more than economic justice, and that regime survival outweighs the daily suffering of Nigerians already battered by harsh economic policies.

“Nigeria deserves leadership that obeys the law it swore to protect, not one that bends it for political gain.

“History will not forget this moment. Nigerians will not either.”

‘They Had Several Weapons, Fired Sporadically’

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed a terrorist attack on its personnel stationed at Wawa area of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Naija News reports that the Commandant of the Corps in the state, Suberu Siyaka-Aniviye, while briefing journalists in Minna on Wednesday, said the attackers arrived in large numbers a few minutes after midnight but were unable to operate freely due to the alertness and prompt response of personnel on duty.

The commandant explained that the personnel attempted to repel the attackers, but the situation became difficult due to several weapons and the numerical strength of the terrorists.

Siyaka-Aniviye said the personnel abandoned their operational vehicle while moving to safety, but the attackers assumed they were still inside and shot repeatedly at it, stressing that the vehicle was riddled with bullets, with its windscreen damaged and all four tyres punctured.

He added that the tyres were later replaced and the vehicle was driven back to the NSCDC headquarters in Minna.

He said, “Our men manoeuvred and took cover, but the attackers fired sporadically because they had several weapons.”

Siyaka-Aniviye further disclosed that the terrorists looted some personal belongings during the attack.

He noted, “They went into huts and carted away luggage containing clothes, mobile phones and other gadgets.”

‘Report Of My Appointment As UNN Visiting Professor Is False’

Renowned writer, Chimamanda Adichie, has described reports of being appointed a visiting professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as entirely false.

Naija News reports that some online publications had claimed that the vice-chancellor (VC) of UNN, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, appointed Adichie, Prof. Kevin Urama, an executive at the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Prof. James Robinson, a professor of the University of Chicago, as visiting professors.

According to the reports, the varsity announced the appointments in a statement dated December 18, 2025, and issued on Wednesday by the acting public relations officer (PRO) of UNN, Inya Egwu.

The statement claimed the appointments were part of Ortuanya’s administration’s drive to put the university on the global academic stage.

However, Adichie, in a statement on Wednesday, through her communications team, signed by Omawumi Ogbe, debunked the appointment and urged the public to disregard the false reports.

The statement read, “It has come to our attention that several news outlets are reporting that Ms. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has been appointed as a ‘Visiting Professor’ at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

“We wish to state categorically that this information is entirely false.

“Ms. Adichie has not received any such appointment, nor has she been in communication with the University regarding a professorship. The reports claiming that official letters were signed and dated December 18, 2025, are inaccurate.

“While UNN holds a very special place in Ms. Adichie’s heart as the institution where she grew up and where her parents served as Professor and Registrar, respectively, it is disappointing that such a significant claim would be circulated without any verification.

“We urge the public and the media to disregard these false reports. We also request that the outlets currently carrying this news take it down immediately to avoid the further spread of misinformation.”

APC compensates ex-council chair allegedly excluded from Kano govt’s severance benefits

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano has compensated a former council chair who was allegedly excluded from the state government’s severance package for former public officials.

On Tuesday, the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, presented a ₦7 million cheque to Fa’izu Alfindiki, the immediate past chairperson of the Kano Municipal Local Government Area.

The payment followed claims that the state government intentionally withheld Mr Alfindiki’s entitlements.

The Severance Payment

Last week, the Kano State Government announced it had finalised the payment of ₦15 billion in severance benefits to former elected officials.

According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the cumulative payout across three phases totalled ₦15.67 billion, benefiting over 3,400 former council members.

However, Mr Jibrin alleged that Mr Alfindiki was singled out and denied his legitimate earnings due to his political affiliations and vocal opposition.

“It is unfortunate that he has been denied his legitimate entitlements simply because he stood firmly with the APC.

“This is wrong, unjust, and a clear breach of the freedom of speech and association,” Mr Jibrin stated.

He said constructive criticism, like that of Mr Alfindiki, is the lubricant of democracy.

Accepting the cheque, Mr Alfindiki expressed gratitude to Mr Jibrin, stating the gesture reinforced his loyalty to the party.

“This singular act proves that the APC is a platform worthy of our dedication and sacrifice,” Mr Alfindiki said. “From the moment this incident happened, I was confident that the party would stand by me.”

In response, the Kano State Government’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Waiya, dismissed claims of political victimisation. He noted that the majority of the beneficiaries are actually members of the APC.

Mr Waiya suggested that Mr Alfindiki’s omission might have been due to a technical glitch rather than a deliberate act.

He further argued that Mr Alfindiki should have commended Governor Abba Yusuf for clearing the debt, a payment he noted the previous APC administration had failed to make.

PDP may set up caretaker committee

…Two factions consider Saraki’s peace formula

Concerned Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders have commenced moves to broker peace between the two factions in accordance with the peace formula suggested by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

According to party sources, party leaders who are interested in averting uncertainties ahead of the 2027 polls have reached out to the factional leaders – Chief Nyesome Wike and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and Alhaji Saminu Turaki – to consider the option of withdrawing pending court cases and agree on a new national convention date.

A source, who is a party to the proposed reconciliation deal, said, “PDP has to return to the Saraki suggestion to restore sanity and survive.”

From the beginning of the protracted crisis, Saraki had urged PDP leaders to manage their affairs such that they would not need to resort to litigation.

The former Senate President, who also cautioned against factionalisation, had envisaged that going to court would stall the progress and unity of the party.

Saraki said factions would only play into the hands of foes plotting their future electoral downfall.

He also advised that the leaders should manage the party to get to the National Convention, where they can now fix all the issues, review the constitution, and chart the way forward.

Also, a Lagos party chieftain, who lamented the neglect of Saraki’s advice, said party elders are trying to bring the two camps into amity.

He said, “The party leaders did not listen. They pushed the matter until there were resultant court cases and factions. With the litigations, Saraki advised that the best move is to stop the convention and set up a caretaker committee that will be used to resolve all the issues and reconcile the various factions and groups.

“Still, the feuding parties refused to listen, and they went to hold a convention that has now become an exercise in futility. With the decision of INEC, PDP has now become a flock of sheep without shepherds. A ship without a captain.”

According to the party elder, “the next move is to return to the Saraki formula. As the former governor of Kwara State has counselled, the leaders should not wait for the court to give judgment in any of the cases.”

He added, “The party leaders should move among themselves and start talking about resolving the disagreements. I am happy about the latest peace effort.”

Bandits collect ransom twice, free Kwara traditional ruler after 25 days in captivity

Bandits have released Oba Kamilu Salami, the Ojibara of Bayagan-Ile community in Ifelodun local government area of Kwara state, after 25 days in captivity.

The traditional ruler was freed on Tuesday at about 7pm after his family and community members paid a ransom.

Rafiu Ayinla Lawal, a senior member of the royal family, confirmed the monarch’s release on Wednesday.

Lawal said residents of Ojibara at home and in the diaspora jointly raised the ransom demanded by the abductors.

His words: “We paid ransom when he had spent 15 days with the terrorists. They collected the money but refused to release him. We had to contribute again, and the second payment was delivered yesterday (Tuesday) before he was finally freed.”

He said Oba Kamilu was immediately taken to a hospital in Ilorin, the state capital, for medical attention after weeks in captivity.

Lawal added that the monarch’s mobile phone was taken from him to allow adequate rest on doctors’ advice.

Members of the royal family accused the Kwara state government and security agencies of failing to assist in securing the monarch’s release.

“The Kwara State Government did not contribute to the ransom, and there was no serious attempt to rescue Oba Kamilu. We, the family and the community, contributed to get our king free. No one from the government or the security agencies made any effort to get him out of the hands of the terrorists,” a family source said.

The abduction and prolonged detention of the monarch have heightened concerns over worsening insecurity in parts of Kwara state.

Oba Kamilu was kidnapped on November 29, 2025, by armed men.

Lawal said the family was forced to sell properties and exhaust personal resources to raise the ransom demanded by the abductors.

Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan takes over at NUPRC, pledges upstream investment revival  – Nairametrics

Newly appointed Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, has formally assumed office.

Her assumption of duty and policy direction were announced at her first town hall with NUPRC management and staff on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, according to a statement by the Commission’s Head of Media and Strategic Communications, Eniola Akinkuotu.

According to the statement, Mrs. Eyesan’s assumption of office is in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021.

What she said

Speaking at the town hall meeting, the new Commission Chief Executive stressed that regulation under the PIA must support industry growth rather than hinder it.

The CCE said, “The goal is that we must enable the industry, we are regulators. We must enable the industry from our interactions with the stakeholders, from our interactions with everybody.”

Eyesan added that her core objective is to ensure the Commission delivers tangible impact.

“My main objective is to ensure that we make a difference. I believe the NUPRC is at the Center of the industry,” she noted.

She also announced clear production ambitions, including growing Nigeria’s crude oil output and increasing gas production to support energy security and economic growth.

Earlier this month, OPEC reported that Nigeria’s crude oil production climbed marginally to 1.436 million barrels per day (bpd) in November, up from 1.401 million bpd in October.

What you should know

Earlier this month, President Bola Tinubu announced the nomination of Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan as the new chief executive officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The nomination follows the resignation of Gbenga Komolafe, who previously led the upstream regulator, and comes as the federal government moves to ensure leadership continuity in Nigeria’s oil and gas regulatory institutions.

Eyesan is a veteran energy executive with more than 30 years of professional experience spanning banking, public service and the oil and gas industry.

She is a graduate of Economics from the University of Benin and began her career in the financial sector, working at People’s Bank of Nigeria and later Gulf Bank of Nigeria, before transitioning into the petroleum industry.

She spent nearly 33 years at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and its successor, NNPC Ltd., rising through the ranks to occupy some of the most senior positions within the organisation.

On leadership style, the CCE promised an open-door policy and frequent staff engagement.

Mrs. Eyesan also solicited for support and cooperation as the industry embarks on the next phase of transformation.
