Fire rages for hours at 22-storey Lagos building on Christmas Day
Emergency responders battled through the early hours of Christmas Day to contain a massive fire that engulfed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, with the blaze spreading to at least four neighbouring buildings.
The fire, which broke out on Wednesday evening, continued for more than 10 hours, causing extensive damage in one of Lagos’ busiest commercial districts.
Video footage from the scene, shared by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Thursday morning, showed thick plumes of smoke billowing from multiple floors of the high-rise, with bright flames visible from a distance and debris scattered across adjoining streets.
According to preliminary reports, the fire started around 5 p.m. on either the fourth or fifth floor of the building, which currently serves mainly as a warehouse and retail outlet for clothing materials, before spreading rapidly to other floors.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said late Wednesday night that the inferno had intensified across several floors, with thick smoke and rising heat hampering access to upper levels and complicating firefighting efforts.
In a statement, LASEMA Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu warned that the situation posed serious risks to lives, nearby structures and businesses, as well as members of the public within the surrounding area.
“The fire continues to spread vertically, requiring sustained multi-agency coordination and specialised equipment to prevent escalation,” Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said.
He advised residents, traders and occupants of adjoining buildings to evacuate immediately to avoid casualties from smoke inhalation, structural failure or further fire spread.
“Evacuation is critical at this stage to safeguard lives and reduce exposure to secondary hazards,” he stated.
Emergency teams, including LASEMA’s Shark Response Unit, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service, were deployed for firefighting, rescue and containment operations, while security agencies cordoned off the area to restrict access.
The Nigerian Television Authority reported that at least four adjacent buildings, including a church and a mosque, were affected by the fire, leaving residents and business owners assessing losses and unable to sleep through the night.
“More than 10 hours after the inferno that engulfed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House located on Martins Street, Lagos Island, emergency responders are yet to completely put out the fire,” the broadcaster said.
Reacting to the incident, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the situation was under control.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Government said no casualties had been recorded, while the cause of the fire remained unknown.
Mr Omotoso said the distress call was received at about 4:41 p.m., prompting an immediate response from firefighters at the Ebute Elefun and Dolphin fire stations, with reinforcement from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station and the Alausa headquarters.
“The firefighters arrived at the scene within 12 minutes, at about 4:53 p.m., and commenced coordinated containment operations,” he said.
He added that preliminary findings showed the fire originated from the fifth floor of the building before spreading to other levels.
According to him, although the structure was formerly used as corporate office space, it now functions largely as a warehouse and retail centre for clothing materials.
Mr Omotoso said Governor Sanwo-Olu personally monitored the situation throughout the night and maintained constant communication with emergency responders and security agencies.
“As at about 3:40 a.m., when the fire had largely been brought under control, the governor was still receiving updates and issuing directives,” he said.
“Our priority is the safety of lives; I have directed that the building and its surroundings be thoroughly secured, and that emergency personnel must ensure that no one is left inside.”

The governor also commended firefighters and other first responders for what he described as a swift and courageous response to the incident.
“Lagosians should remain calm; the situation is under control,” he said.
Authorities said safety assessments of nearby buildings were ongoing to prevent secondary incidents, adding that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.

The lady explained that something worse could have happened to her and her goods had she not listened to and followed her mother.
Speaking in the video, @_iyiolaa shared that the incident didn’t appear serious at the beginning, as she noticed a little smoke around 4 pm in the afternoon.

While she and several others didn’t pay much attention to it, thinking it wasn’t serious, the incident eventually led to the loss of millions of naira worth of goods.
She shared:
“This is what happened, this is how the fire started. The fire started around 4 o’clock. I was still at my shop because it was nothing serious. It was just smoke; nobody knew it was really serious. Even people in that building didn’t move their goods because it didn’t seem serious, and all those fire-fighting devices were already around.”
In the TikTok clip, she added that before the fire escalated, fire service personnel were already present but didn’t appear to be doing anything, as there was no visible fire yet.
She spoke further:
“They were not even doing anything, they were just so relaxed. I left around 7 o’clock, got home around 8 to 9 o’clock, and I was already in my house when one of my friends from my shop started sending me videos showing the fire had become serious and that I should come quickly.”

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned in strong terms the bomb attack on a mosque in Maiduguri, Borno State, which occurred on Wednesday, describing the incident as sad and deeply troubling.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Forum’s National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Mohammed Tukur Baba , the Forum said it received the news with “much sadness,” mourning those who lost their lives in the attack and praying for the peaceful repose of their souls.
ACF also expressed sympathy for worshippers who sustained injuries, wishing them a quick and full recovery, while extending condolences to the families of the deceased and those affected by the tragedy.
The Forum further commiserated with the Government and people of Borno State, as well as Nigerians at large, noting that the incident was a painful reminder of the persistent threat of terrorism and insecurity in the country.
According to ACF, the attack underscores the reality that the scourge of terror has neither been tamed nor adequately brought under control, despite ongoing efforts by security agencies.
Recalling its recent Christmas message, the Forum stressed that the fight against insecurity must be taken decisively to the “merchants of terror” with the urgency and vigour the situation demands.
“It is utterly inconceivable and totally unacceptable that criminal elements would be allowed to bring the country to its knees,” the Forum said, insisting that such acts must not be tolerated under any guise.
ACF therefore called for heightened vigilance at all times, particularly in places of congregation such as places of worship, markets and social gatherings, warning that anti-social and criminal elements, both foreign and domestic, must not be allowed to disrupt normal life or claim any victory over peace and stability.

In a display of interfaith harmony, hundreds of Muslims from across Northern Nigeria joined Christians on Thursday for the annual Christmas service at the Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Ministry in Kaduna.
The event, now in its 15th year, has become a symbol of religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Christians in the region.
The General Overseer of the church, Pastor Yohanna Buru, said the growing participation of Muslims in the celebration reflected a shared commitment to peace and mutual respect.
“This is the 15th time Muslims and Christians are gathering for this historic annual event to strengthen our relationship and foster unity,” Buru said.
He explained that Muslims from various Islamic sects including Tijjaniyya, Shi’ite groups under the Islamic Movement, and Sunni Muslims joined the congregation to mark the birth of Jesus Christ.
According to him, the celebration took place amid economic hardship, insecurity, and rising food prices, underscoring the need for interfaith cooperation and prayers for national stability.
“We are all children of Adam and Eve. We worship one God, have holy books, and believe in paradise and hell. These shared values should unite us,” he added.
Pastor Buru also noted that Muslim delegations presented gifts to the church as tokens of love and friendship, further strengthening the bond between the two faiths.
Speaking at the service, Islamic scholar Sheikh Salihu Mai-Barota said the Muslim participants attended to celebrate with Christians and promote peace.
“Our presence here is to encourage religious tolerance and unity. We must continue to pray for peace and urge our youths to avoid spreading fake news or engaging in religious violence,” he said.
Similarly, Imam Ibrahim Musa from Igabi Local Government Area congratulated Christians on the Christmas celebration and urged Nigerian youths to support government efforts toward peace and development.
“Muslims and Christians regularly visit one another during religious celebrations, including the birth of Prophet Muhammad. This strengthens our mutual respect and understanding,” Musa noted.
He described the Kaduna Christmas service as a “strong symbol of interfaith harmony” that should be emulated across the country.
Musa also highlighted that Pastor Buru was a recipient of the 2022 United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week Award, presented by King Abdullah II of Jordan, in recognition of his peacebuilding efforts.
Other speakers at the event, including Sheikh Ahmed Rufai and Mallam Lawal Maduru, called for continuous prayers for peace, responsible use of social media, and cautioned youths against drug abuse.
Niger recruits forest guards, urges discipline and resilience

The Niger State Government has recruited the first batch of forest guards across the 25 local councils of the state.
Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago disclosed this during a visit to the trainees at their training ground in Minna on Wednesday, 24th December 2025. The visit provided an opportunity for the governor to interact with the recruits and boost their morale.
Bago congratulated the trainees and urged them to remain disciplined and resilient, assuring them of the state government’s determination to provide all necessary support and ensure their well-being.
The governor also revealed that more recruits would be trained in batches to strengthen security across communities in the state.
The forest guard initiative is a strategic collaboration between the federal and state governments to establish a permanent, armed, and locally rooted security force aimed at reclaiming Nigeria’s forests from criminal elements and protecting the environment.
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has urged the Christian faithful and Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of peace, love, tolerance, and sacrifice at Christmas, describing them as the core values of the season.
This was contained in a Christmas message he personally released on Christmas Day.
He also called for optimism and renewed hope in the nation.
“As we celebrate the joy and grace of Christmas, I extend my warmest greetings and heartfelt goodwill to all Christian faithful in Enugu State and across Nigeria.

At the Gratitude concert, Gideon could be found among the set, which comprises the trumpeter, drummers, and keyboardists, among others. Yet, another reason people will always love to have Gideon around is his calm aura even while strumming his strings.
He plays the guitar effortlessly. At a particular point at the concert when the lead singer said, “Let’s go back to Nigeria,” he said, “Onye na-eme mma, lekwa ikperem na ala” and the backups responded with “Chineke idima…”
Gideon wowed the audience. How he cuts in, strumming with a quick response with chords that lift the moment is gracious. Gideon’s timing was perfect!

Gratitude is a great concert where worshippers let out their souls to worship and praise God, and Gideon’s role as a lead guitarist makes the concert more blessed.
He keeps proving to all as a rising UK-based guitarist that he will soon take the world by storm.

…Reaffirms Commitment to Troops’ Welfare
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State on Thursday celebrated this year’s Christmas with frontline troops of the Nigerian Army’s 68 Battalion in the strategic border town of Malam Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area of the state.
Governor Zulum spent the preceding four days traversing northern Borno, coordinating security measures and strengthening the resilience of returning communities.
As part of his administration’s commitment to restoring civil authority, he spent the night in the newly resettled town, engaging with community leaders and residents.
The Governor’s visit to the battalion, coinciding with the festive season, served as a symbolic and reassuring gesture to soldiers stationed far from their families under challenging operational conditions.
Zulum commended the officers and men for their gallantry, resilience, and professionalism, stating that their sacrifices had ensured the survival and stability of Malam Fatori. He described them as the true guardians of peace, whose courage had enabled displaced communities to return and rebuild.
“Celebrating Christmas with the troops protecting our territorial integrity is not merely ceremonial, but a deliberate effort to stand with you at the point of sacrifice,” Governor Zulum said.
The Governor, “The courage you display daily in securing Malam Fatori and other frontline locations continues to inspire the state’s commitment to supporting security agencies until lasting peace is achieved.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the armed forces, assuring the battalion of continued logistical and welfare assistance to complement federal efforts.
“Let me reiterate that security remains the top priority of my administration,” he stated, stressing that without peace, development and recovery would be impossible.
In the spirit of the season, Governor Zulum donated five bulls to the battalion to enable the troops to celebrate with dignity. In a rare personal gesture, he joined the soldiers in line, sharing a meal with them within the base.
The visit elicited widespread jubilation from the troops, many of whom expressed renewed morale at the Governor’s presence and personal engagement.
For soldiers long separated from their families, the occasion served as a powerful reminder that their sacrifices are seen, valued, and appreciated.
The Governor was accompanied by the member House of Assembly representing Abadam State Constituency, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Honourable Sugun Mai Mele and the Director General Borno State Emergency Management Agency.

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have reportedly shot a Catholic priest of St. Kelvin’s Parish, Ogbaku, in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, on Christmas Day.
Naija News understands that the cleric, who serves as the assistant parish priest of the church, was reportedly attacked while attempting to enter the parish premises early on Thursday morning.
An inside source told The Sun that the incident occurred at about 8 a.m., when the priest was about to open the church gate.
According to the source, the attackers, who were not seen by anyone around, fired from a distance, hitting the priest in the process.
“It happened this morning. He was trying to enter the gate but before he could, a bullet from nowhere hit him,” the source said.
One of the bullets reportedly struck the cleric on his right arm, leaving him injured. The source added that the priest was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, where he is said to be responding to treatment.
“Nobody saw the people that shot him; it was like a stray bullet. Thank God he did not die. He has been taken to the hospital,” the source added.
The Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, His Grace, Lucius Ugorji, confirmed the incident to The PUNCH, but noted that the identity of the attackers remains unclear.
He said investigations were ongoing, while security agencies had been alerted to the development.
The APC Grassroots Governance Group (APC G3) has asked Nigerians to disregard a misleading article in a national newspaper, titled “Tinubu relocating Nigeria’s capital to Lagos, piece by piece?”.
APC G3 described the article as misleading and the handiwork of persons uncomfortable with President Bola Tinubu’s acceptance by the core North.
In a press statement, APC G3 National Coordinator, Amechi Chuks Oyema, said the publication on Christmas Day shows the writers are agents of destabilization and ethnic sentiments. He stated that the President is distributing benefits of democracy equally.
The National Coordinator questioned the article’s claims, asking: “Of what use is the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and NIMASA in Abuja, when their operations are domiciled in Lagos?”
He also noted that most banks have their headquarters in Lagos, making it practical for the Central Bank of Nigeria to transfer some departments there.
The statement further said the article failed to mention that President Tinubu has not abandoned the rail contracts to Niger Republic, and that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a commendable project.
It added that poverty rates are highest in the North, and questioned whether President Tinubu is responsible for this.
APC G3 urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu, saying he has done his best and is addressing fundamental issues in the country.

Six members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing deep internal crises within the PDP and what they described as poor governance in the state.
The lawmakers announced their decision on Thursday through separate letters addressed to the Speaker of the House.
Those who defected are Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi I), Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North), Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North), Bashir Bello (Bungudu West), Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West), and Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North).
In their letters, titled “Notice of Resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC)”, the lawmakers said persistent crises within the PDP forced their decision.
They said the crises had resulted in factional leadership within the party.
One of the letters read: “I write to formally inform the Honourable Speaker and Honourable Members of this Honourable House of my decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) due to lingering and unresolved crises in my party, which have resulted in factional leadership.”
The lawmakers said their defection was in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
They cited Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which allows a lawmaker to defect if there is a division within their political party.
They also accused the PDP-led government in Zamfara State, under Governor Dauda Lawal, of poor leadership.
According to them, the administration has failed to adequately address insecurity in the state and has not fulfilled its campaign promises.
Another part of the letters read: “My decision is in line with Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and is also based on the poor leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal, particularly his failure to address security challenges and fulfil campaign promises.”
Two persons have been confirmed dead after a bicycle conveying two youths rammed into a commercial jeep along Okigwe road in Owerri, Imo state, on Christmas Eve.
Eyewitnesses said the victims were returning from a football training session in Orji, Owerri north local government area, when the collision occurred.
They said the crash was head-on and the youths died instantly at the scene, causing a traffic gridlock on the busy Okigwe road, leaving Christmas travellers stranded.
Eyewitnesses said traffic wardens struggled to control the situation as some youths reportedly swarmed the area, triggering a stampede that worsened the congestion.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deceased were from Amatta in Ikeduru local government area.
The source said the bodies were later evacuated by an ambulance and taken to a mortuary.
Henry Okoye, police public relations officer in Imo, said investigations were ongoing to determine the cause of the Orji accident that claimed two lives.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said his administration places a high premium on the health and wellbeing of every Lagosian, stressing that no resident should feel forgotten, especially during a season associated with love, hope and celebration.

The governor also assured patients and healthcare workers of the state government’s continued commitment to providing the necessary resources for quality and compassionate care across public health facilities.
During the visit, the governor’s delegation toured key wards of the hospital, including the Emergency and Casualty Unit, Paediatric, Male and Female wards, as well as the antenatal and postnatal sections, where Christmas gifts were distributed to patients.
He commended the hospital’s management and staff for their professionalism, compassion and dedication, particularly those on duty during the festive period, noting that their sacrifice ensured patients felt supported and valued despite being away from home.
In his response, the Medical Director of Gbagada General Hospital, Dr. Olusegun Babafemi, expressed appreciation to the governor for the annual outreach, describing the gesture as a morale booster for both patients and staff.
He said the celebration aligns with the state’s vision of giving hope and encouragement to patients while praying for their speedy recovery.
The Rotary Club of Gbagada, led by its President, Rotarian Tosin Olawoyin, partnered with the state in the distribution of Christmas gifts, highlighting the importance of public-private collaboration in supporting healthcare delivery and patient welfare.
The high point of the outreach was the presentation of awards and gifts to the Outstanding Staff of the Year 2025 and outstanding wards, in recognition of excellence, teamwork and dedication to service.
The visit ended on a note of hope and celebration, with prayers for healing and renewed strength for patients, as the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its resolve to put people at the heart of its health system.
