Former Senate President and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has said that the PDP national leadership is not contemplating any caretaker committee arrangement.

Senator Wabara, who was responding to insinuations that the PDP is thinking of setting up a caretaker committee to oversee the affairs of the party, dismissed the news as a ruse.

He maintained that the Ibadan National Convention of the party, which produced Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee NWC, was validly convened, adding that the leadership remains the authentic leadership of the PDP.

Wabara further said that as the Chairman of the PDP BoT, which is the conscience of the party and custodian of its assets, the BoT was not aware of any caretaker committee arrangement, saying such an arrangement is uncalled for.

According to Wabara,  ”The authentic National Chairman of PDP remains Barrister Tanimu Turaki. The National Working Committee has not indicated that there’s anything like a caretaker committee. And of course, there cannot be because we have legitimately and constitutionally conducted the National Convention of the party.

“Board of Trustees of the Party is the conscience of the Party, and it’s not in contention at all. So,  as far as we are concerned, the said National Caretaker Committee is not real. Such a thing is not under consideration.”

Wabara, who said that the BoT of the party was waiting for the court judgement on the pending suit at the court, promised to abide by the court verdict.

He urged party faithful and members of the public to disregard any rumour from impostors who, he said, were collaborating with external forces to destroy  PDP.

Wabara, who insisted that the dark days of the PDP were gone, called on all opposition political parties and Nigerians to firmly unite against the attempt to coerce the country into a one -party state.

The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has donated 1,000 bags of 25kg rice to the Christian Northern Nigeria Political Forum (CNNPF) in Bauchi State to support Christians during Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Mr Ayuba Dogara, State Coordinator of the Forum, disclosed this on Saturday during the distribution of the items across Bauchi.

He said the rice would be equitably shared across all 20 Local Government Areas.

Dogara explained that beneficiaries would include members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), women and youth groups, associations, and other vulnerable persons, describing the intervention as timely and thoughtful amid festive preparations.

According to him, the gesture reflected solidarity and appreciation for CNNPF members who have supported the nation’s leadership even before the inception of the current administration, showing empathy and recognition of their contributions.

He linked the initiative to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting its focus on inclusion, compassion, and opportunity for all Nigerians, regardless of background or social status, especially during the festive season.

“The distribution of Christmas packages to Christian families across Northern Nigeria is a testament to the First Lady’s deep sense of empathy, commitment to national service, and moral leadership,” Dogara said.

He urged citizens to continue living in peace and harmony, emphasising that meaningful nation-building thrived in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, unity, and cooperation among communities across the country.

Dogara also called on local government coordinators to ensure fair and transparent distribution of the items, ensuring that the donation reached intended beneficiaries without discrimination or bias.

In his remarks, Mr Istifanus Manasseh, APC Chairman of Bogoro Local Government Area, commended President Tinubu’s leadership style, noting its emphasis on inclusiveness, citizen support, and programmes that addressed ordinary Nigerians’ needs.

A beneficiary, Mr Bage Maitandu, expressed gratitude for the gesture, pledging continued support for the Tinubu administration and describing the donation as a symbol of care, encouragement, and shared hope during the festive season.

The Agbekoya Society of Nigeria (ASN) has threatened to take action against gunmen operating in South-West geopolitical zone of the country.

Agbekoya stated this in reaction to the recent killing of three farmers in Igboho, Orelope Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The group’s position was contained in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday in Ibadan by its Secretary General, Adegbenro Ogunlana and signed by its President General, Kamorudeen Okikiola.

Expressing shock over the killings, the group warning that it would no longer remain silent in the face of repeated attacks on farmers.

It would be recalled that the Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, had raised an alarm over the attack in his hometown, identifying the victims as Aderoju Mukaila, Olawuwo Saka and Ojeniyi Ojebayo.

Igboho called on President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to urgently address what he described as growing insecurity in rural communities across Oyo State and the wider South-West region.

“We urge the authorities to take urgent measures to protect farmers and ensure their safety. Failure to do so will be met with severe consequences, and Agbekoya will not hesitate to take necessary action to defend its members and communities.

“We condemn this heinous act of violence and demand immediate action from the Oyo State and Federal Governments to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The senseless killing of these innocent farmers is unacceptable and highlights the escalating insecurity in our communities,” the statement said.

Agbekoya further demanded immediate investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

It also tasked government with the responsibity of ensuring enhanced security measures to protect farmers and communities, and adequate support for the families of the victims.

The Police Command in Adamawa says it has arrested two suspects over allegations of kidnapping and threats, executed within the Sarau Belel community, in the Maiha Local Government Area of the state

The command’s spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed this in a statement to newsmen on Saturday in Yola.

He said that the arrest followed a complaint on Friday by one Mr Emmanuel Daniel, a resident of Sagal Village, that he was threatened by the suspects.

“The Adamawa Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough with the arrest of two suspected kidnappers responsible for the kidnapping and related threats within the Sarau Belel community, Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa.

“On the Dec. 26 2025, the Command received a complaint from Emmanuel Daniel, a resident of Sagal Village, Sarau Belel, who reported that he was threatened with kidnapping by two individuals,” he said.

He said that the suspects allegedly claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of his younger brother, one Mr Joshua Daniel, who went missing in November 2024.

“Upon receipt of the complaint, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Dankombo Morris, immediately deployed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Sarau Belel, alongside operatives of the Division, to carry out a swift and coordinated operation,” he said.

“This led to the successful arrest of two suspects.”

He added that during the investigation, the suspects confessed to the allegations and are currently aiding the command with useful information.

“In furtherance of the investigation, the CP has directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Command to take over the case to ensure a thorough and discreet investigation, as well as diligent prosecution of the suspects in accordance with the law,” he said.

Nguroje said that the Command reassures residents of the state of its commitment to the protection of lives and property.

He enjoined members of the public to continue to support the Police with timely and credible information.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, was on Saturday captured in a viral video engaging in a traditional wrestling dance with former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudom Nwuche.

The event, according to Wike’s media aide Lere Olayinka, took place in Ochigba, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Wike arrived Rivers State a few days ago to celebrate the Christmas and New Year with his family.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said the late former governor of the state, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, remains a defining figure in Nigeria’s evolving security architecture, two years after his death.

Aiyedatiwa noted that Akeredolu’s strong advocacy for state policing and his central role in the establishment of the South-West Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, fundamentally reshaped the approach to subnational security in the country.

Naija News reports that the governor stated this in a tribute released on Saturday to mark the second anniversary of Akeredolu’s passing.

Describing the former governor as a courageous and principled leader, Aiyedatiwa said Akeredolu’s legacy continues to resonate across Ondo State and beyond.

“Two years ago, we bid a painful farewell to a true statesman, a visionary leader, and one of the champions of progressive governance, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON, former Governor of Ondo State,” he said.

According to him, Akeredolu’s death was a major loss to both the state and the nation.

“His passing was a huge loss to Ondo State and Nigeria, but his legacy continues to inspire, motivate, and challenge us,” Aiyedatiwa added.

The governor recalled that Akeredolu was at the forefront of the push for decentralised policing at a time when insecurity was becoming a national concern.

He said the late governor’s belief in protecting lives and property led him to rally his South-West counterparts to establish Amotekun.

“Akeredolu’s advocacy for State policing drove his initiative to mobilise his South-West colleagues in establishing the South West Security Network, codenamed Amotekun Corps, to enhance the security of the people of Yorubaland in general and Ondo State in particular,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa also recalled Akeredolu’s firm and uncompromising stance on security matters, quoting one of his most memorable declarations: “I will not play politics with the lives of my people.”

According to the governor, the creation of Amotekun marked a turning point in Nigeria’s internal security thinking.

“This courageous intervention redefined Nigeria’s subnational security architecture,” he said.

He added that what began as a regional initiative has now gained wider national acceptance.

“A foresight that has since gained national acceptance, with recent Senate resolutions aligning with the President’s reform agenda to decentralise policing and strengthen intelligence-led security, paving the way for constitutional and legislative backing,” Aiyedatiwa noted.

Beyond security reforms, the governor said Akeredolu’s leadership philosophy was anchored on continuity, mentorship and institutional stability.

He recalled that the former governor consistently emphasised the responsibility of leaders to prepare others for the future.

“At different fora, including his landmark address at our joint inauguration on 24 February 2021, he spoke openly about the responsibility of leaders to deliberately prepare others for the future and to make room for growth through guidance, trust, and institutional stability,” he said.

Marking the second anniversary of Akeredolu’s death, Aiyedatiwa said the government and people of Ondo State were united in celebrating his contributions to security, governance and development.

“As government and people of Ondo State, we remember and honour Arakunrin Akeredolu on the second anniversary of his passing,” he said.

“We celebrate his passion for development, enduring impacts, advocacy for justice, equity, and unity.”

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving the late leader’s ideals.

“We recommit to upholding his enduring legacies and renew our pledge to fully support the Foundation established by the Akeredolu family to immortalise this great son of Owo land,” he said.

He concluded with prayers for the repose of Akeredolu’s soul and continued progress for the state.

“May his soul continue to rest in perfect peace, and may Ondo State continue to draw strength from his exemplary life of courage, service, and principled leadership,” Governor Aiyedatiwa said.

Birth of the Foundation

Growing up within a diverse socio-economic environment marked by varying life realities, Engr. Opeoluwa Adebayo was exposed early to both opportunity and limitation. From a young age, he demonstrated exceptional academic ability.

He attended Citadel International college, Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, where his brilliance in mathematics earned him the nickname “Pascaline Denix II”—a testament to his consistent academic excellence.

During this period, he represented his school in several academic competitions, both within Nigeria and internationally.

Despite his academic strength, he recalls that brilliance alone did not shield him from the harsher realities of life.

“Even as a gifted student with a strong academic inclination, I still felt the downside of life. School fees were often high, and basic educational provisions were sometimes lacking,” he reflects.

As he progressed, he observed that requests for assistance particularly in education, healthcare, and basic welfare were not isolated events but recurring challenges affecting many families.

Even as a national academic champion who won several quiz competitions across the country, he vividly recalls the constraints that shaped his growth, as well as those of his peers.

These experiences sharpened his conviction that education and welfare should not depend solely on individual struggle, but on collective responsibility.

He consistently emphasised the need for structured educational support, accessible utilities, and intentional welfare interventions.

“For exceptional students, the rewards and incentives were largely discouraging. When all efforts were put together, the outcomes were often below average,” he notes.

His academic journey continued at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he studied Chemical Engineering.

There, his excellence earned him recognition and sponsorships from organisations such as MTN and other bodies supporting academic competitions.

Rather than using the stipends solely for personal benefit, he frequently redirected these funds to support fellow students during times of need.

He also volunteered his time, offering academic support and tutorials to classmates and junior students to help them succeed in their examinations.

For Engr. Adebayo, giving was never about recognition or gratitude. It was an instinctive extension of empathy; selflessly deploying his resources, intellects, and opportunities for the benefit of others.

The recently appointed General Manager/Chief Executive of the Enugu State Community and Social Development Agency(CSDA) Hon Monday Diamond Ani has assumed office in line with the directive of the Governor HE Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

A lone accident at the Nteje-Onitsha Road, in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra, has claimed the life of a woman.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Anambra, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed the accident to newsmen on Saturday in Awka.

She attributed the accident to speeding, tyre burst and loss of control.

Asekhauno said that the crash involved an unidentified driver of a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC SUV without a registration number.

“According to eyewitness reports, the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was speeding when he suddenly sighted a motorcyclist riding against traffic.

“While trying to avoid the motorcyclist, he lost control of the vehicle, which somersaulted and crashed.

“A total of five person including two male adults, two female adults and a girl-child, were involved in the incident.

“One female adult was killed and four others sustained some degree of injuries; They were taken to the hospital by good Samaritans before the arrival of the FRSC rescue team, “she said.

Asekhauno said the damaged vehicle was towed to the Ogbunike Police Station.

She commiserated with the family of the deceased, and wished the injured speedy recoveries.

“We urge motorists to prioritise safety by avoiding speeding, maintaining their vehicles, and obeying traffic rules,” she said.

President Bola Tinubu said that the circumstances surrounding the release of kidnapped schoolchildren in Kebbi and Niger states are less important than the fact that they were safely returned, declaring that “the end justifies the means.”

The president made the remark at his Lagos residence on Friday when he hosted the delegates of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), led by its President, Daniel Okoh.

Details of the meeting were provided in a statement by the president’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Friday.

In November, two separate terror groups kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in separate attacks in Kebbi and Niger, marking the resurgence of school abduction.

The captives regained freedom after spending several days in captivity. Since their return, Nigerians have called for clarification on the circumstances surrounding their release. There have been allegations of ransom payment as well as prisoner exchange, but none have been confirmed as of the time of this report.

Mr Tinubu, however, believes that Nigerians should not focus on how his administration secured the release of the victims.

He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, adding that public debate over how the children were freed or what happened to their abductors should be secondary.

“The rhetoric on how the children were released or what happened to the kidnappers is secondary; the end justifies the means,” the president said.

Better security promised

During the meeting, Mr Tinubu assured Nigerians that the ongoing “recalibration” of the nation’s security architecture would soon begin to yield results.

He said his administration is committed to establishing state and community policing as part of efforts to change Nigeria’s security narrative, noting that some of the measures being implemented require time to mature.

“The mood of the nation is peaceful, although our ungoverned spaces are so large. The challenge is real, but we will surmount it,” the president said, while calling on religious leaders to support the government through vigilance, cooperation and prayers.

Mr Tinubu explained that the take-off of community and state police is dependent on the completion of necessary legislative processes by the National Assembly.

He also pointed to challenges in strengthening military capacity, saying military hardware is expensive and not readily available.

According to him, Nigeria has placed orders for four attack helicopters from the United States, which will take time to arrive, while assistance has also been sought from Turkey.

He acknowledged that the delays have affected public perception of the administration’s commitment to addressing insecurity but maintained that the government remains resolute.

Despite the guerrilla tactics employed by terrorists, the president said his administration would not relent in its efforts to return the country to peace and prosperity.

In his remarks, CAN President Mr Okoh, an archbishop, assured Mr Tinubu of the body’s support, describing him as “our President” and pledging the cooperation of the Christian community.

He commended the president’s zeal in addressing the nation’s socio-economic and security challenges and said the church was confident in his leadership.

Mr Okoh also acknowledged the receipt of palliatives extended to CAN during religious festivals and beyond.

According to the explanation she provided alongside the video, the food had spoilt by the time she woke up the following morning.

She lamented that the rice had already gone bad before the day began, which caused her decision to throw it away rather than attempt to consume it.

A prominent member of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Ambassador Mohammed Bomoi, has resigned from the ruling party, blaming dissatisfaction with its national leadership and alleged marginalization of the North-East region.

Bomoi made this known in a statement dated December 25, 2025, in which he announced his withdrawal from the Tinubu/Shettima political movement and his decision to sever ties with the APC at the national level.

It would be recalled that, he served as Secretary of the APC Special Purpose Committee for the North-East Zone and was an active member of the Tinubu Support Group.

According to him, his resignation followed what he described as the party’s failure to adequately recognise and include him and other loyal members who mobilised support across Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba and Yobe states.

He also accused the party’s national leadership of exhibiting an aloof and laissez-faire attitude toward the region.

Bomoi said the perceived lack of inclusion had diminished his confidence in the APC and in the political leaders he worked to support.

He further alleged that actions under the current administration indicated that the North was being treated as a “caste,” adding that the social contract between the North and the centre had been deliberately undermined.

“Consequently, I have no regret leaving my position as Secretary of the APC Special Purpose Committee, North-East Zone,” he said.

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has expressed concern over recent policy decisions by the Federal Government, including proposed tax reforms, warning that such measures could deepen public distrust if issues of fairness, justice and inclusivity are not properly addressed.

The Islamic students’ body made this known in a statement on Saturday during the opening ceremony of its B-Zone Islamic Vacation Course (IVC), held at the proposed permanent site of Al-Ummah University along the Ibadan–Lagos Expressway, Onigari, Ogun State.

Speaking at the event, the National President of the Society, Mallam Tajudeen Mustapha, said Nigeria is currently grappling with multiple challenges, including economic hardship, insecurity, moral decline and leadership deficits. He warned that policies perceived as unjust further erode citizens’ confidence in governance.

Mustapha noted that taxation itself was not the main issue, but rather the growing lack of trust in how public resources are managed.

He expressed concern that reforms, particularly those touching on taxation, raise questions of equity and sovereignty, making citizens increasingly sceptical and disengaged.

The MSSN national leadership stressed that responsible governance is not optional, urging authorities to ensure that policies are anchored on justice, transparency and accountability in order to rebuild public trust.

Delivering a lecture titled “We Are All Responsible,” Dr Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, Imam of the Muslim Community, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, and Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Oyo State, said responsibility applies to all members of society without exception.

Abdul-Hameed explained that social injustice, corruption, insecurity and moral decay persist when individuals and leaders fail to act responsibly, adding that silence in the face of wrongdoing amounts to complicity.

He stressed that accountability in Islam covers actions, words and inactions, noting that parents, leaders, youths and professionals all share responsibility for societal outcomes.

Politics Nigeria recalls that President Bola Tinubu, in June, signed into law a comprehensive package of tax reform legislation, marking one of the most significant overhauls of Nigeria’s fiscal framework in decades.

The new tax regime, scheduled to take effect in January 2026, has generated widespread concern and anxiety among Nigerians.

Despite assurances from the Federal Government that the reforms will strengthen fiscal policy and deliver long-term benefits, critics argue that the measures could worsen the economic hardship currently facing many Nigerians.

It was about 4 p.m. in Lekki, that familiar hour when the sun still burns but patience has long evaporated.

At the traffic light near Admiralty Way, a white passenger bus, locally known as a korope, revved impatiently as the light flicked green.

Beside it, almost invisible in the visual chaos, a delivery bicycle rider leaned forward, equally eager to beat the gridlock.

The collision that followed was sudden and unsurprising.

The rider sprawled onto the asphalt, bruised but fortunate, helped up by passersby as the bus disappeared into the afternoon traffic, already late for its next stop.

Scenes like this are no longer remarkable in Lagos. Driving in the city has always been a test of temperament, reflexes, and sometimes faith.

Private car owners contend daily with commercial buses that treat traffic laws as optional guidelines, while okada riders often behave as if every road were a racetrack and every junction a suggestion.

Since the ban on motorcycle passenger transport in many parts of the city, these riders have not disappeared.

Instead, they have rebranded. Delivery is now the new hustle, and speed is the currency that keeps it profitable.

The economics are straightforward and unforgiving. The faster you deliver, the more jobs you complete, and the more money you earn. Nairametrics explained this here.

Riders working with major logistics and food delivery platforms can earn between N1,500 and N2,500 per delivery, with some reporting daily earnings north of N25,000.

Bicycle delivery riders, covering shorter distances, earn slightly less but can still make up to N15,000 on a good day.

In a country grappling with high unemployment and underemployment, these figures are understandably attractive. From the rider’s perspective, the risks are simply part of the trade-off.

Yet cities are not meant to function on calculated recklessness. In most modern urban environments, bicycles and motorcycles operate within clearly defined systems.

Dedicated lanes, enforced speed limits, protective gear, and strict penalties create a balance between efficiency and safety.

Riders are visible, regulated, and predictable. Lagos, unfortunately, offers a different reality. Delivery bicycles weave between lanes, ride against traffic, mount sidewalks, and appear suddenly from blind spots.

Many operate on major highways and express roads where they were never intended to be, often without helmets or reflective gear, particularly after dark.

December amplifies everything. “Detty December,” as Lagosians proudly call it, is a season of concerts, weddings, house parties, and endless social gatherings. The city becomes louder, busier, and more impatient.

Consumption spikes, and so does the demand for fast, on-demand delivery. Food, drinks, fashion items, and last-minute purchases must arrive now, not later. Delivery riders respond rationally to this pressure by riding harder, longer, and faster.

The roads, already hostile, become outright dangerous.

What makes this situation more troubling is that much of the risk is structurally encouraged. Some platforms reward riders with higher job allocations if they maintain near-perfect acceptance rates, discouraging breaks and thoughtful refusals.

Others indirectly incentivize dangerous speed by ranking riders on delivery times without sufficiently weighting safety metrics.

During peak periods, some riders work for multiple platforms simultaneously, juggling apps, notifications, and deadlines while navigating some of the most chaotic roads on the continent. This is not resilience; it is systemic risk masquerading as productivity.

To be clear, this is not an argument against delivery work or those who do it. These riders are the arteries of Nigeria’s rapidly growing e-commerce economy, an industry worth billions of dollars and still expanding.

Without them, the promise of convenience collapses at the last mile. Until drones, autonomous vehicles, or other futuristic solutions become practical realities, human riders will remain essential.

The issue is not their presence but the absence of adequate guardrails around their operations.

Responsibility cannot rest solely on government, though regulators certainly have a role to play. Enforcement of existing traffic laws is inconsistent, and infrastructure for non-car road users remains inadequate.

However, the platforms that profit directly from this labor must do more than offer onboarding training and branded jackets.

Continuous monitoring, mandatory safety gear, realistic delivery timelines, enforced rest periods, and insurance coverage should be non-negotiable. Safety should be built into algorithms, not treated as an afterthought.

Riders themselves face disproportionate danger compared to bus drivers or private motorists, simply by virtue of their exposure. One mistake, whether theirs or someone else’s, carries far greater consequences.

Pedestrians, too, are increasingly at risk as sidewalks become unofficial delivery lanes. A city cannot function sustainably when speed consistently trumps safety, and when efficiency is measured only in minutes saved rather than injuries avoided.

Lagos has always thrived on hustle, ingenuity, and controlled chaos. But chaos, when left unchecked, stops being productive. Delivery bikes are not inherently a menace. The system that rewards recklessness is.

If platforms, regulators, and city planners fail to act, collisions like the one in Lekki will remain everyday occurrences, briefly noticed and quickly forgotten. That is not progress. It is negligence moving at full speed.
