Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday commended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for standing and defending what is right in the state and also supported him and President Bola Tinubu.

Wike said they have shown trust and capacity to lead and stand by the right principles.

He gave the commendation while speaking at the reception organized for him by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly at the assembly quarters.

Wike urged them to continue to stand for what is right, adding that they have shown and stood out in the country as the beacon of democracy.

He faulted the moves that led to the withholding of their entitlements by the Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, before the declaration of the State of Emergency.   

The minister said, “It is important to come to members of the state house of Assembly to say thank you for what you have done for us and the people of Rivers State. I say thank you for the car gift.

“A man is strong; a woman is strong based on your spouses. I’ve seen men who are not men and I’ve also seen women who are not women. I’m saying so because, If you have not had the opportunity to be in the corridors of power, you will not understand that a man can be influenced negatively by his spouse and a woman can be influenced negatively by her spouse.

“But here in the State House of Assembly all of them have shown that they are working together for the development of the state.

“I have been in politics actively and I have seen it all. This is the first time I have seen legislators telling the world what they stand for and standing firm and that we are a different arm of government. Not a department of government. There are those who are very courageous and there are those who can say no when things are wrong. There are those who are privileged to be in the position you are, they will find one means or the other to do all manner of things.

“We thank God almighty for giving us life. We thank God for using people to get to where we are. We are very grateful and we are not ungrateful people. Everybody believes money is everything and you can buy everybody over. I’ve told people who care that money has a boundary and there is limitation, when it gets to that point it stops. Money does not walk on its own; somebody has to carry the money.

“So today you stood out in this country as the beacon of democracy. How would elected persons be denied their entitlements simply because they disagreed with you. Your families stood firm with you.

“It will be unfair on our part to get to 2026 because in 2025 all those who stood with you, all those who worked with you, you did not tell them thank you and you need to tell them thank you. When I came in here, I was emotionally touched. Anybody who entered this complex, I thought by now this complex would have been overgrown with weeds.

A social media user and cancer patient, Mensah Omolola, popularly known on X as AuntieEsther, has died after weeks of public debate surrounding her medical treatment.

Her death was confirmed on Saturday by media personality #AUNTYMUSE_, who supported her throughout her illness.

Reacting to a post announcing her death by an X user, Tabuko, tweeting as swaggsphotos, who wrote, “Unfortunately, we lost Aunty Esther. Very sad!”, #AUNTYMUSE_ replied, “May her soul rest in peace 🙏🙏.”

AuntieEsther became a national talking point after she publicly rejected a blood transfusion recommended by doctors as part of her cancer treatment, citing her religious beliefs as a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Her decision generated intense debate across Nigeria, with many questioning the balance between religious conviction and life-saving medical care.

Following public appeals, Nigerians donated more than ₦30 million to support her medical care.

The fundraising was largely coordinated by charity advocate Wisdom Obi-Dickson, popularly known on X as #Wizarab10, who announced on December 1, 2025, that ₦30.7 million had been raised.

In earlier updates, AuntieEsther disclosed that medical tests showed the cancer was confined to her breast and armpit areas. She said doctors planned to commence chemotherapy but advised that her blood levels needed to be improved first.

“My organs inside fine. Doc say she want to start chemotherapy but I go take injection,” she wrote, explaining that she and her family opted for treatment methods that would boost her blood count without transfusion.

She also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support.

The situation became more controversial when Obi-Dickson revealed that AuntieEsther’s church had warned her of possible disciplinary action, including disfellowship, if she accepted a blood transfusion.

According to him, doctors presented two treatment options: one involving blood transfusion that was within the donated funds, and another longer and more expensive alternative that avoided transfusion.

“Though it will take longer and cost more, we have to respect her religious beliefs,” Obi-Dickson said at the time.

He later expressed frustration, stating that despite repeated medical advice, AuntieEsther, her family and church leaders insisted on refusing transfusion under any circumstance.

Meanwhile, #AUNTYMUSE_ clarified that AuntieEsther’s rejection of blood transfusion was clearly stated from the beginning, even before the fundraising began.

She said doctors had agreed that the non-transfusion treatment could still work.

The controversy divided public opinion, with some Nigerians arguing that donated funds should have been redirected to other patients if life-saving medical advice was being declined.

Zamfara State was once again plunged into fear on Saturday following a suspected bomb explosion along the Yar’Tasha–Dansadau road in Maru Local Government Area, an incident that has intensified public anger and renewed questions over the whereabouts and leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal amid worsening insecurity.

Many travellers are feared dead after the blast, which reportedly caught several commuters by surprise along the busy route. While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media show panic-stricken travellers fleeing the scene, underscoring the growing sense of vulnerability on Zamfara roads.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara State Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, told Daily Post in a telephone interview that security agencies were aware of the explosion but were still gathering details.

“I can confirm that there was a blast in that area but the incident just happened. I can’t tell you details yet. I will update you later,” Abubakar said.

The latest attack has further fueled accusations that Zamfara is fast becoming a safe haven for terrorists and armed groups, with residents and political commentators accusing the state government of failing to rise to the gravity of the crisis.

Critics allege that Governor Dauda Lawal has been out of the state for close to three weeks on vacation while insecurity worsens across several local government areas. The governor’s prolonged absence, they argue, has created a leadership vacuum at a time when decisive action is urgently needed.

“Zamfara is bleeding, yet its chief executive is nowhere to be found,” a civil society activist in Gusau said. “People are being killed on highways, communities are under siege, and the government appears absent.”

Reacting to the bombing on X (formerly Twitter), a user, Nuhu Sada (@NuhuSada0), wrote:

“Another tragic attack on innocent travelers in Zamfara. Families are grieving, lives are lost, and property destroyed. Security agencies must act quickly to prevent further harm and bring those responsible to justice.”

The Kwara State Government has deployed forest guards to protect its forests following weeks of abductions and armed attacks across forested parts of the state, signalling what officials describe as a shift to a more aggressive security posture.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, said about 1,000 forest guards completed their training and were deployed on Saturday as part of a joint federal and state security initiative. He said the deployment followed a passing-out parade in Ilorin attended by security chiefs and government officials.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said the forest guards initiative would deny terrorists and kidnappers safe haven in Kwara’s forests, warning that criminal groups now face “the option of either leaving the state or paying a heavy price.”

“Today opens a new page in our campaign against all forms of terrorism, kidnapping, and opportunist attacks on our people by bad faith actors who exploit our vast territories for evil purposes,” the governor said at the event. He described the enlistment of armed forest guards as “a game changer” that would strengthen coordination between local auxiliaries and conventional security forces.

The governor said the guards, who were recruited from local communities, would work with the military, police, and other agencies to flush out armed groups operating in forest corridors linking Kaiama, Patigi, Edu, Ifelodun, and Ekiti local government areas. He added that the state plans to deploy at least 200 forest guards to each local government to reinforce surveillance and rapid response.

“And the message is very clear: more than ever before, the terrorists now have the option of immediately leaving our state or paying a heavy price,” Mr AbdulRazaq said. “Today’s launch of the forest guards simply means that we are going on the offensive because our people deserve their peace.”

The deployment comes amid rising insecurity in Kwara, where armed groups have carried out repeated kidnappings and attacks in recent weeks. Two Chinese workers were abducted earlier this month from a road construction site along the Bode Saadu–Kaiama axis. Farmers have been seized from their fields in Patigi and Edu areas, while a traditional ruler, the Ojibara of Bayagan-Ile in Ifelodun, remains in captivity more than a week after his abduction.

Other recent incidents include an attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, in November, during which some worshippers were killed and dozens abducted, as well as the arrest of suspected arms couriers and kidnapping kingpins along forest routes linking Kwara to Niger and Zamfara states.

Mr AbdulRazaq said the state was aligning with the federal government’s Presidential Forest Guards initiative to reclaim ungoverned spaces and dismantle criminal networks. He commended President Bola Tinubu and the Office of the National Security Adviser for driving the programme, which lists Kwara among its pilot states.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu said the forest guards would be deployed immediately to vulnerable communities, particularly around forests that have become transit routes and hideouts for armed groups. Represented by the Assistant Director-General of the State Security Services, Femi Shotayo, Mr Ribadu said the guards would serve as first responders and intelligence assets.

“Beyond being first responders, these guards are expected to gather actionable human intelligence, support ongoing security operations, and restore state presence where it has long been absent,” he said. He added that salaries and allowances would be paid promptly and warned the guards to respect rules of engagement and human rights.

“The oath of allegiance is not a mere formality; it is a binding pledge of loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and commitment to the protection of lives and property,” Mr Ribadu said.

Security analysts say the success of the initiative will depend on sustained funding, coordination with conventional forces, and community cooperation.

The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz has outlined the numerous achievements made by the Company in 2025 and stated the focus of TCN after its successful unbundling.

In his 2025 End of Year Message, Dr Abdulaziz said: “This has indeed been a historic year, one that will be remembered for the unbundling of TCN and the successful take-off of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

” With the accomplishment of this important reform article, TCN now stands fully focused on infrastructural development, maintenance, expanding and strengthening the transmission network, while NISO assumes responsibility for general administration of the System and Market operations as well as enforcement and compliance audit. 

“It is a transition that reflects maturity in our sector and a bold step toward building the kind of electricity supply industry Nigeria deserves,” Abdulaziz said.

Speaking on strides made by the Company, the MD said: “This year, we made deliberate strides to strengthen our infrastructure, rehabilitate aging assets, and expand transformer capacity across the country. 

” With these efforts, TCN’s wheeling capability has grown to 8,700MW, ensuring that we are better prepared to support the nation’s increasing demand for electricity.

“A highlight of our progress came on March 4, 2025, when TCN transmitted an all-time peak generation of 5,801.84MW with a maximum daily energy of 128,370.75MWh delivered nationwide; the highest ever recorded in the country’s history. 

“Between January 2024 and November 2025, we also commissioned eighty-two new power transformers, adding over 8,500MVA to the grid, a major boost to reliability and capacity. 

“These accomplishments speak to TCN’s determination to keep improving the backbone of Nigeria’s power sector.”

Speaking further, Engr Abdulaziz who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO,) of TCN said: “It is interesting to note that, in the course of the year, TCN also advanced several critical projects funded by our development partners valued at over $1.16 billion.

” This partnership has resulted in projects such as the Abuja Feeding Scheme, which includes the construction of five new substations and a new 330kV transmission line. Some of these projects are already completed, while others are ongoing, aimed at modernizing the grid, expanding capacity, and preparing TCN to meet the energy needs of a growing economy. The confidence shown by these partners in TCN’s ability to deliver is both humbling and motivating.

“These achievements are a testament to the passion, expertise, and collaboration you bring to TCN every day. 

“Our most valuable asset is our people, and your hard work has been the cornerstone of our success. 

“Together, we have been able to preserve the integrity of the transmission network while delivering on our mandate. For this, I salute every member of the TCN family. 

” Your dedication, professionalism and hard work are the true engine of our progress,” an elated Engr Abdulaziz said.

He lamented some of the challenges faced by the company saying that ” vandalism continues to be a thorny issue in the affairs of TCN. 

“From January to November 2025 alone, the company recorded 131 vandalism incidents across its network. 

“Management”, the CEO said, ” is however working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), other security operatives, and vigilante groups in some communities to curb this menace. “We will continue to intensify sensitization campaigns and community engagement efforts to curb this trend and safeguard our critical infrastructure.

“Within the TCN family, Management has also continued to work closely with our unions in the best interest of staff and organizational harmony. 

“We appreciate the constructive collaboration with the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), whose cooperation has helped sustain industrial peace throughout the year,” he stated.

On what to expect in 2026, the MD said: “we must endeavour to build on this years’ accomplishments, with focus on accelerating project implementation, modernizing transmission infrastructure, prompt maintenance, and deepening stakeholder engagement. 

“As TCN deepens its collaboration with NISO, I urge all staff to embrace this partnership, together with NISO and other sector players, we must stay focused on the larger goal of advancing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and powering our nation’s growth.

“At this moment of reflection and celebration, I give thanks to God Almighty for seeing us through another year. 

“I also express deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, our donor and financial partners, security agencies, and colleagues across the power sector for their steadfast support.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC, without consulting him.

Wike, who spoke at the Assembly Quarters on Saturday, noted that their defection affected him.

On December 5, 2025, the 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including Speaker Martins Amaewhule, left PDP for APC.

Their defection heightened political tension in the state, which had just emerged from a six-month emergency rule.

Shortly after their defection, Governor Sim Fubara also left PDP for APC amid the leadership crisis rocking the former ruling party.

Speaking on Saturday, Wike said: “Let me thank you Mr Speaker even though it affected me with 17 of you moving out to join APC without consulting me and leaving 10 other members here.

“This is what I have been advising my National Chairman, keep your house in order so that the enemies will not come and take our people.

“The enemies are hovering around and when you are not vigilant they take your people, that is why you must be at alert to make sure that enemies don’t take your people.”

The minister vowed to ensure that members of the assembly who have not defected would never suffer again.

“Those of you still remaining, whenever you choose, I’m here, but what I will not do is to let you suffer in your life,” he added.

Lagos stood still for another momentous celebration as the popular Eyo Festival kicked off yesterday at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos. The ceremony which saw the presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was besieged by prominent Lagosians, tourists and culture influencers.

In his remarks on the return of Eyo Festival, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu regarded it as a historic moment for Lagos and Nigeria.

The governor noted that the return of Eyo Festival is a clear reflection of Lagos’ unbroken cultural heritage and enduring identity as the heartbeat of the nation.

“Mr President, this is not just a celebration; it is history unfolding in our lifetime. What we are witnessing today is the reaffirmation of our identity, resilience and deep-rooted heritage,” he said.

He described President Tinubu as “our father and the best of leaders Nigeria has been privileged to have,” adding that the gathering was a testament to the enduring strength of Yoruba culture.

According to the governor, the 2025 Eyo Festival holds special significance as it honours four eminent Nigerians who made lasting contributions to the state and the nation: the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, revered Iyaloja of Lagos and mother of the President; the first civilian Governor of Lagos State, late Alhaji Lateef Jakande; the late Sir Michael Otedola; and the first Military Administrator of Lagos State, late Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson.

Sanwo-Olu eulogised Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, describing her as a symbol of strength, discipline and service whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Lagos women and leaders alike.

“Mama Abibatu Mogaji embodied courage, enterprise and selfless service. These virtues live on in her son, our President, whose leadership has been marked by compassion, resilience and commitment to national progress,” he said.

The governor noted that the Eyo Festival, beyond its ceremonial grandeur, remains a spiritual and cultural rite that connects generations and honours those who have made indelible contributions to society.

For him, the festival reaffirms Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s cultural capital, boosting tourism, economic activities and global visibility.

“Today, our streets become a theatre of history, our drums speak a universal language, and our white-clad Eyos stand as ambassadors of our identity. This festival strengthens tourism, stimulates economic activity and invites the world to experience the true spirit of Lagos,” he said.

Nigeria and the African Union have called for respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of Somalia following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.

Israel recently became the first country to recognize Somaliland, the self-declared autonomous region in north-western Somalia that proclaimed independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Somali state.

Reacting to the development, Nigeria and the African Union reaffirmed their firm support for the sovereignty, unity, and statehood of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In a statement, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria recognizes the Government of Somalia as the legitimate authority representing the Somali people. She added that Nigeria commends the Somali government’s continued efforts to achieve peace, security, and national reconciliation despite ongoing challenges.

The statement read, “The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of all Member States of the United Nations and the African Union, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

 “In this regard, Nigeria declares its firm and unequivocal support for the sovereignty, unity, and statehood of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

“Nigeria recognizes the Government of Somalia as the legitimate authority representing the Somali people and commends its continued efforts to achieve peace, security, and national reconciliation amidst significant challenges. Nigeria stands in solidarity with Somalia and strongly condemns any actions or rhetoric that seek to undermine its constitutional order and territorial integrity. The Government of Nigeria calls on all regional and international actors to strictly respect Somalia’s sovereignty and to support its institutions in their vital work of rebuilding a stable, prosperous, and resilient nation.

“We believe that the stability of Somalia is integral to the peace and security of the entire Horn of Africa region and the African continent at large. Therefore, Nigeria remains committed to supporting Somalia through multilateral frameworks and international cooperation.

“The government of Nigeria urges international actors to desist from recognising any part of the territory of Somalia as an independent entity. Such actions would only escalate the crisis and should be avoided.”

The African Union in its reaction criticised Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland, reaffirming its long-standing position that the breakaway region remains part of Somalia.

The chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Youssouf, in a statement said the bloc had taken note with deep concern of recent developments relating to Somaliland and rejected any attempt to recognise it as an independent state.

“In this regard, the Chairperson of the Commission unequivocally reaffirms the longstanding and consistent position of the African Union, grounded in the principles enshrined in the Constitutive Act of the African Union, in particular the respect for the intangibility of borders inherited at independence, as affirmed by the 1964 decision of the Organisation of African Unity,” the statement read.

Youssouf said he firmly rejected any initiative “aimed at recognising Somaliland as an independent entity.

“Any attempt to undermine the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia runs counter to the fundamental principles of the African Union and risks setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent.”

He added that Somaliland “remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” a position the AU says is shared by its 55 member states.

Somaliland, which has governed most of the territory it claims for over decades, has enjoyed relative peace and stability compared to much of Somalia. However, it has not received international recognition, despite sustained lobbying by its leaders. President Abdirahman Abdullahi has made international recognition a top priority since taking office last year.

Somalia’s federal government condemned Israel’s decision, describing it as an “unlawful step,” and insisted that Somaliland is “an integral, inseparable, and inalienable part” of Somalia.

The move also drew criticism from neighbouring countries. Egypt said its foreign minister had spoken with his counterparts in Somalia, Turkey, and Djibouti, and that “they underscored their complete rejection of any unilateral measures that could undermine Somali sovereignty or erode the foundations of stability in the country.”

The AU warned that Israel’s decision risked “setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the continent,” noting that many African countries are grappling with their own secessionist movements.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the agreement, describing it as part of Israel’s broader diplomatic outreach.

He said the agreement with Somaliland “is in the spirit of the Abraham Accords,” adding: “The State of Israel plans to immediately expand its relations with the Republic of Somaliland through extensive cooperation in the fields of agriculture, health, technology, and economy.”

Netanyahu also invited Abdullahi to visit his office.

Reacting to Israel’s decision, Somaliland’s president hailed it as a major breakthrough. Calling it a “historic moment,” Abdullahi said in a post on X that the agreement marked the beginning of a “strategic partnership.”

Says ex-Ekiti governor lacks credibility

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed claims by former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, that he received N50billion support from President Bola Tinubu following the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

Addressing newsmen on Saturday, the Special Adviser on Media to Governor Makinde, Dr. Sulaimon Olarenwaju, described the allegation as baseless and challenged Fayose to provide evidence to support it.

Olarenwaju said Fayose’s claim lacked credibility.

“He who makes an allegation must provide evidence. Let him produce proof of what he is claiming. It is important to note that Fayose lacks credibility. Even members of his family have publicly disowned him.

“What credibility does such a person have? People like that speak carelessly, and ordinarily, they should not be taken seriously. But since he has made a claim, let him substantiate it,” he said.

It would be reecalled that former Governor Fayose, an ally of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, while speaking on a TVC programme, ‘Politics Tonight,’ on Friday, had accused Governor Makinde of concealing an alleged N50 billion donation from the presidency in the wake of a deadly explosion in Ibadan last year.

The former governor claimed that although the money was not paid directly into Oyo State’s bank account, it was linked to Makinde’s visit to Tinubu after the incident.

“You did not tell Nigerians that you got, at the prerogative and mercy of Mr President, N50 billion in support of the explosion victims in Ibadan. He never said that to Nigeria.

“So, the president can say the explosion is not worth more than N10 billion.The N50 billion did not come into the coffers of Oyo State. It came as a result of your interface with the president, because you came out to say that you met with him,” he had said.

Fayose further alleged: “You only told Nigerians the part where you said the president asked you to go and organise the APC for him and that you said you could not organise. But you did not tell Nigerians what the president did for you and for the good people of your state.”

However, responding to Fayose’s claims, Makinde’s spokesman denied that the presidency made any such monetary donation to Oyo State government.

“There is no substance whatsoever in that claim. Did the president say anything like that? Did the Federal Government make such a statement? If neither the President nor the Federal Government said so, who is Fayose to make that claim? There was no N50 billion donation,” the governor’s aide reiterated.

Fayose’s comments followed Makinde’s declaration that he would not support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. The governor had also disclosed that he rejected a request to help organise the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State.

Fayose, in response, criticised Makinde for making public what he described as private conversations with the president, citing a similar experience during his own time in office.

“He called me after an interview and said what he told me about not contesting against the president was private and not meant for public consumption. I was doing it in his interest so that they would not drag his name into the contest.

“But the same Governor Makinde went public to reveal all the discussions he had with the president and said he would not be part of the president’s re-election. And I am telling you, Governor Makinde’s candidate will not contest under the platform of the PDP,” he added.

LEADERSHIP reports that the exchange comes amid deepening divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is split into two factions backed by former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and former Minister of Special Duties Kabiru Turaki. Fayose is aligned with the Wike-backed faction, while Makinde belongs to the Turaki-led group of the PDP.

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has said that the 2027 election would be smoother for him than previous outings.

He declared that he is not afraid of the 2027 polls, as his administration’s achievements since taking charge of Abia State would give him a smoother ride.

Otti, who was speaking at the 2025 Aro Day event held in Arochukwu LGA, said that he would not be selling promises to the people, but would only leverage what they are already seeing with their own eyes.

He expressed concern that many people are already causing themselves stress over the 2027 polls, even though the election year is still far off.

“2027 is still far away, but a lot of people have started killing themselves before 2027 comes.

“We are not worried about 2027 because we have a mandate to deliver to our people in four years. We’ve done 30 months, so we still have a long way to go,” Otti stated.

Speaking further, the Abia governor said: “Just like it happened in 2023, 2027 will even be smoother, I can assure you. Why am I so confident? I’m confident because in 2023, we were selling promises, but now there are one or two things we can point to.”

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, has charged officers and men of the newly established 248 Battalion, Illela Barracks, Sokoto State, to take pride in their posting, describing them as pioneers entrusted with laying a solid foundation for the unit.

Shuaibu, who visited the battalion on Saturday, assured the troops that their welfare remained a top priority for the Nigerian Army, while urging them to see the assignment as an opportunity to build a lasting legacy.

Addressing officers and soldiers during an interactive session, the Army Chief described their deployment to the new battalion as a badge of honour, particularly encouraging young soldiers to embrace the challenge with commitment and dedication.

“You are the pioneers of this unit, and I want you to wear that badge of honour,” Shuaibu said.

“Rome was not built in a day. Gradually, we will build this barracks, and when you look back years from now, you will be proud to say you were part of those who laid the foundation.”

The COAS disclosed that the Army Headquarters had approved several immediate infrastructural interventions to improve living and working conditions at the Illela Barracks.

According to him, the approved projects include the construction of additional accommodation, the development of a parade ground, and the construction of an access road leading to the barracks.

“I have listened to your Commanding Officer and the challenges you face,” he said.

“We have approved the construction of additional living quarters, your parade ground, and the road coming into these barracks.”

He assured the troops that the Nigerian Army was committed to ensuring their comfort and operational effectiveness, adding that efforts were ongoing to fast-track the projects.

Shuaibu also addressed young officers, particularly lieutenants, whom he described as the backbone of the battalion’s operational effectiveness.

He tasked them with ensuring rigorous and continuous training of soldiers, stressing that leadership by example remained critical to mission success.

“In our time, we called you ‘fire eaters’,” he said.

“You are responsible for training these soldiers day and night. You will lead them into battle, and how you conduct yourselves now will determine how your men follow you.”

The Army Chief further reminded officers and soldiers of the responsibility attached to their presidential commission, emphasising the need for discipline, professionalism and sound leadership to sustain operational readiness.

Addressing the soldiers directly, Shuaibu urged them to obey their officers and allow themselves to be guided, noting that Nigeria’s security largely depended on the strength, discipline and commitment of its young military personnel.

“Every nation depends on its young people. Being young means you have the strength to do more,” he said.

“While we will do our best to provide what you need, you must continue to do what is expected of you as soldiers.”

Naija News reports that the visit ended with an interactive session, during which the COAS fielded questions from the troops. He was accompanied by senior staff officers from the Army Headquarters.
