Anthony Joshua Escapes Death As Two Persons Die in Road Crash – THISDAYLIVE

A former World Boxing Champion, Anthony Joshua, on Monday, escaped death in a road crash that claimed two lives in Makun along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
It was gathered that the crash involved a Lexus SUV with registration number LAGOS KRD 850 HN, conveying Joshua rammed into a stationary truck.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Mr Afolabi Odunsi, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta.
Odunsi explained that the accident occured at about 12 noon involving two vehicles, adding that members of the Sagamu unit of FRSC rescue team were at the scene as soon as they were informed.
The FRSC spokesperson said that the accident was due to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver who overtook from the right hand side thereby ramming into a stationary vehicle.
”Five people were involved, one injured, two were unhurt while two were killed in the crash.
”However, it was discovered that Anthony Joshua (international boxer) was involved but he only sustained injury, and was taken to an undisclosed hospital by the security officers attached to him.
”The bodies of the two killed have since been taken to the morgue. Obstructions have been cleared,” he said.
The Ogun Police Command also confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer, Mr Oluseyi Babaseyi.
Babaseyi explained that the deceased had been deposited at Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu.
Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government has expressed profound condolences to the families, friends and associates of the victims of the tragic road accident involving Anthony Joshua, who narrowly escaped death.
The condolence of the state government was contained in a statement signed by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy.
According to the statement, the fatal accident occurred along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of the state, and sadly claimed the lives of two persons.
It said Joshua and three others were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu at the time of the incident.
It said: “Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu. Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were promptly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
“The sport utility vehicle conveying the occupants was said to have rammed into a stationary truck along the expressway. While the severely damaged vehicle has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office. Efforts are ongoing to tow the truck involved to the same location to facilitate a comprehensive investigation.”
The stat government described the incident as deeply unfortunate and painful, particularly with the loss of precious lives, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical care.
The government advised motorists to exercise utmost caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, especially during the festive season when vehicular movement is typically heavy.
Six journalists have tragically died in a car accident along the gombe-yola road, marking another sad day for the journalism profession in the state.
Akelicious report that the journalists, who were travelling to cover an assignment, lost control of their vehicle, resulting in the fatal crash.
Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital.

In a condolence message issued on Monday on his official X page, the president described the incident as a tragic loss, extending his sympathies to Mr Joshua and the families of those who died in the crash.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” President Tinubu said, noting that the incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a season of celebration.
The president acknowledged the emotional toll of the accident on the boxer and his family, urging them to draw strength during the difficult period.
Mr Tinubu praised Mr Joshua, a two-time unified world heavyweight champion, for his discipline, courage and commitment to Nigeria, describing him as a source of national pride whose achievements have continued to inspire young Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
“As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” the president said.
He also called for national solidarity, stressing the need for compassion and unity in moments of grief.

Less than two weeks after the leadership of the Labour Party, LP, in Ogun State wooed the Chief Promoter of the Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, with a promise of the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 election, leaders of the Action Democratic Party, ADP, on Monday visited him with a similar offer.
The Ogun State chairperson of ADP, Yeye Olufunke Olarenwaju, disclosed this when she led party leaders to Showunmi’s residence at the Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta, on Monday.
She said the visit was part of efforts to invite Showunmi to join the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Describing Showunmi as a credible politician and grassroots mobiliser, Olarenwaju said he has the capacity to fly the party’s flag in the next election.
“We want him to come and contest the next governorship election under ADP. He is a credible politician and a grassroots mobiliser. We have found him worthy of the governorship seat in Ogun State, and that is why we have come to invite him to contest on the platform of ADP,” she said.
Showunmi, a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, thanked the party for the invitation but said he would consult widely before making a decision.
Responding to questions from journalists on which party he would join, Showunmi said he would consider the most stable and organised party under which he could contest the next election.
He said, “What I expect to happen is that at some point in time, we will look at which party is the most stable, the most acceptable, and the most organised. Then we will run.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Barr. Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister, of anti-party activities after he openly declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
In a statement issued on Sunday by Ini Ememobong, national publicity secretary of the PDP, the party said Wike described himself as the “number one supporter” of the APC’s candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
According to the party, the declaration confirms the basis of Wike’s expulsion for what it described as sustained anti-party activities.
The PDP accused the former Rivers governor of engaging in “anti-democratic adventurism” and acting as a constant agent provocateur in the political space.
The party alleged that Wike has repeatedly fuelled leadership crises within the PDP since 2015, beginning from the Ali Modu Sheriff era to the removal of Uche Secondus and later Iyorchia Ayu as national chairmen.
It said Wike championed the emergence of Ayu as national chairman against the advice of party leaders before later leading calls for his removal.
The PDP said Wike’s conduct in Rivers state also reflected the same pattern, citing alleged imposition of candidates, exclusionary internal practices and the prevention of a duly nominated PDP presidential candidate from campaigning in the state.
The party said Wike’s politics “thrives on perpetual conflict” and seeks relevance through “calculated disruption”.
The statement said: “All through the interview, Minister Wike showed obvious signs of fear of losing the attention of the President, his slipping grip of Rivers State, and his frustration with the unbending nature of the true leadership of the PDP at the national level.”
The PDP said Wike and his associates had now openly chosen to work against the party’s collective interest in favour of an opposing political platform.
It alleged that Wike and his group, including Senator Sam Anyanwu, had agreed to support the APC and President Tinubu as part of a deal aimed at undermining the PDP.
The party said: “We remind Wike that as a lawyer, he knows that agreements made to achieve an illegal purpose are not enforceable and should not be encouraged.”
The PDP assured Nigerians that it would field a credible presidential candidate who would enjoy widespread support and win the 2027 election.
The party added that the Kabiru Turaki-led national working committee was working to rebuild the PDP, resolve pending court cases and prepare the party for electoral success in 2027.
Bandits have attacked Ebbe community in Shanga local government area of Kebbi state, leaving an unspecified number of residents dead and several others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers struck suddenly, opening fire indiscriminately on residents, which forced many to flee into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities for safety.
Residents said the community has been thrown into shock, noting that it had not witnessed such a violent assault in years.
“The gunmen came suddenly and started shooting. People ran in all directions. We are still in shock. Many have fled to the surrounding villages,” a resident who requested anonymity told SaharaReporters.
Bashir Usman, police public relations officer in Kebbi, told Channels Television that officers are currently on the ground assessing the situation.
“We are on top of the matter and are working to determine the number of casualties and injuries. An official statement will be issued soon,” Usman said.
Residents have appealed to the government and security agencies to intervene urgently, describing the attack as deadly and unprecedented in the area.
Nigeria’s financial markets have remained stable and resilient despite heightened security activity following a joint Nigeria–United States counterterrorism operation in Sokoto on Christmas Day.
This is according to a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun.

“Far from destabilising markets or weakening confidence, such actions strengthen the foundations of peace, protect productive communities, and reinforce the conditions required for sustainable growth,” he said.
Edun stressed that security and economic stability are inseparable, noting that efforts to safeguard lives are inherently supportive of growth and investment.
Macroeconomic gains under the Tinubu administration
The minister said Nigeria has recorded “tangible and measurable progress” on both security and economic reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with improvements reflected in recent macroeconomic indicators.
Nigeria’s economy grew by 3.98 per cent in the third quarter of 2025, following 4.23 per cent growth in Q2, with expectations of a stronger performance in the fourth quarter.
Inflation, he added, has declined for seven consecutive periods and is now below 15 per cent, signalling improving price stability and the effectiveness of coordinated fiscal and monetary policies.
Markets are stable, credit ratings upgraded
Edun emphasised that Nigeria’s financial markets remain robust, with both domestic and international debt markets functioning efficiently.
“Over the past year, Nigeria has received credit rating upgrades from Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor’s, clear, independent endorsements of the strength of our reforms and the credibility of our economic direction,” he said.
He noted that fiscal discipline, efficiency and macroeconomic stability have been maintained, enabling the economy to withstand external shocks.
Outlook for 2026 and investor confidence
Referencing President Tinubu’s recent address, Edun said the administration’s goal for 2026 is to consolidate the gains of 2025, deepen resilience and build a sustainable, inclusive, growth-oriented economy.
“As markets reopen on Monday, 29 December 2025, investors can be confident that Nigeria remains focused, reform-driven, and committed to stability,” he said.
According to the minister, Nigeria’s fundamentals are strengthening, policy direction is clear, and the government’s resolve to protect lives and grow the economy remains firm.
“Nigeria remains open for business, anchored in peace, and firmly focused on the future,” Edun added.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on his behalf by his media aide, Osho Oluwatosin.
According to the cleric, the U.S. action should not be mistaken for meaningful assistance to Nigeria, describing it instead as driven by Western interests.
He argued that the strike has left Nigeria exposed and could further complicate ongoing efforts to curb kidnapping and insurgency.
Ayodele insisted that security challenges in the country cannot be resolved through foreign intervention alone.
“Nigerians shouldn’t celebrate yet, and President Tinubu shouldn’t celebrate either, because the powerlessness of his government is getting exposed, and America can come up with anything against him. This won’t stop kidnapping or insecurity in Nigeria.
“The government of Nigeria must work on it because the US cannot do it without the Nigerian government.
“Another bombing is coming up, and these bandits are ready for the consequences. They are also ready to counter-attack heavily; the government must get prepared for the outcome.”
Ayodele further called for urgent coordination within the Nigerian military, urging security agencies to review their strategies to avoid setbacks in the fight against insecurity.
He also raised concerns about individuals allegedly involved in negotiations with armed groups, describing them as a major obstacle to peace.
According to him, such actors must be investigated and prosecuted if the country is serious about ending terrorism.
While critical of the U.S. strike, the cleric acknowledged that American involvement could help uncover those financing terrorism within Nigeria.
“America will expose the terrorist financiers, but what is going to happen to those negotiating with the bandits?
“These ones are the major problems, and if the country is serious about insecurity, the military must go after these negotiators. This needs serious planning so it won’t get worse,” he added.

Blackout in Nigeria as National Power Grid Collapses Again, Supply Drops to Zero MW – THISDAYLIVE

Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Monday afternoon, leaving power supply across most of the country at near zero levels, plunging homes and businesses into blackout.
Distribution load figures released at 3:12pm Monday showed only minimal electricity was reaching consumers.
Data from the Distribution Companies (Discos) revealed that only Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) received power at the time, recording 30 megawatts (MW) and 20MW respectively.
THISDAY’s check revealed that all other operators, including Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola Discos, were allocated zero megawatts.
Nationwide electricity distribution stood at just 50MW, far below normal operating levels, leaving homes, businesses, and critical services without adequate power.
Efforts to restore the grid were reported to be ongoing by the Nigerian as of Monday evening.
The latest figures indicate a widespread and severe outage affecting major urban and regional centres across Nigeria.
With only 50MW being supplied nationwide, the collapse represents one of the most significant disruptions in recent years.
The near-total blackout affected not just households but also businesses and public infrastructure that rely on stable electricity supply.
No official explanation had been provided by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) or the Federal Ministry of Power at the time of reporting, leaving the cause and expected restoration timeline unclear.
Nigeria’s national grid has experienced repeated collapses in recent years, often leading to prolonged blackouts and disruptions to economic activities.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has expressed profound gratitude to dignitaries who attended the installation of Seyi Tinubu as Okanlomo of Yorubaland and Senator Abubakar Yari as Baloyin of Yorubaland.

BENIN CITY — Media entrepreneur Dr. Pedro Obaseki has vowed to pursue legal action following his alleged assault on Sunday, as the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Senate Chief Whip, Sir Rowland Owie, strongly condemned the incident.
Speaking to Vanguard on Monday, Obaseki said although he abhors violence and does not wish to escalate tensions in the Benin Kingdom, he is determined to seek justice through lawful means.
“Yes, I am definitely pursuing this to its logical legal conclusion. Everybody that beat me will pay. Those that arrested and accosted me will pay. Those that sent them, no matter how highly placed, will pay,” he said.
He added that he intends to file both civil and criminal charges against those involved but stressed that he does not want any destruction of property or retaliatory violence.
“I just don’t want any vandalisation of people’s property or any dastardly action. I will handle this legally,” Obaseki stated.
In a related development, the Edo State chapter of the PDP condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of Obaseki’s fundamental human rights.
In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, Esq., the PDP urged security agencies to immediately apprehend and prosecute those responsible.
“This incident must be situated within a wider and deeply disturbing pattern,” the statement read. “Over the past year, Edo State has witnessed an alarming descent into lawlessness, street violence, intimidation, and the normalisation of mob action, largely driven by politically protected thugs masquerading as party loyalists.”
The party warned that assaults going unpunished and perpetrators being shielded pose grave dangers to democracy and public order in the state.
Also reacting, former Senate Chief Whip Sir Rowland Owie described the attack as “barbaric, unconscionable, and utterly incompatible with a civilised society governed by law.”
“What transpired on Sunday is not merely an assault on one individual; it is an assault on the rule of law itself,” Owie said. “It is symptomatic of a deeply troubling descent into lawlessness and impunity and a warning sign of a dangerous slide towards Hobbesian anarchy if left unchecked.”
Owie called on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure the immediate arrest, thorough investigation, and prosecution of all those involved, stressing that decisive action is necessary to reassure citizens that the state has not been surrendered to criminal elements.
He also expressed sympathy to Obaseki and his family, urging him to remain steadfast and drawing inspiration from Psalm 37:1–2.
Owie further appealed to Edo citizens, civil society groups, and community leaders to speak out against violence and resist attempts to destabilise the state through fear and intimidation.
Reacting to the PDP’s position, the Acting State Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Don Ofure Osehobo, dismissed the opposition party’s claims, accusing it of politicising the incident.
According to Osehobo, the PDP’s reaction stems from discomfort over the dismantling of what he described as an era of tolerated disorder.
“Instead of supporting lawful investigation into the Pedro Obaseki incident, the PDP chose to inflame emotions and disrespect institutions in its reckless pursuit of headlines,” he said.
He maintained that the APC condemns violence in all forms and assured that the incident is under investigation without interference.
“Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration will not shield anyone found culpable. Edo State will not return to the PDP’s dark days of tolerated lawlessness,” Osehobo added.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed that the command is aware of the incident and has ordered a full investigation.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed deep concern over the planned implementation of the newly introduced Tax Reform Laws, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.

In a press statement signed by Comrade Olushola Oladoja, National President of NANS, the association warned that implementing the law in its present form was likely to deepen resentment and distrust between citizens and government authorities.
“First, the modalities for creating national orientation about this law are problematic, as Nigerians are grossly ill-informed and insufficiently enlightened about the content, scope, breadth, impacts and long-term implications of the new tax reform law.
“Across the country, there is palpable fear and widespread suspicion that this law, if implemented without proper understanding, will further burden citizens who are already struggling under severe economic hardship.
“It will weaken the viability and capacity of many businesses and individual Nigerians to cope with the economic shocks that will accompany this policy, particularly when poor public understanding of the law affects the planning and execution of financial projects in the coming year,” it said.
NANS further stated that what is even more troubling was the deliberate neglect of structured, grassroots-based organisations such as NANS and the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), which have extensive memberships and reach across virtually every family, community and constituency in the country.
The association, therefore, demanded that clear, rigorous and comprehensive nationwide public enlightenment campaigns be conducted through inclusive, community-based engagements.
It also urged the National Assembly to conclude its review and investigation into the alleged alterations to the laws and make its findings publicly available.
NANS warned that failure by the relevant authorities to heed its call within 14 days, on or before January 14, would leave the association with no option but to commence coordinated nationwide protests to defend the interests of Nigerian students and the broader citizenry.
British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua invovled in a Road accident in Ogun State
British former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has survived a fatal car accident in Ogun State, Nigeria, which claimed the lives of two British men travelling with him.
The crash occurred on Monday along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck.
Police confirmed that Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries while seated in the rear of the vehicle.
“The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” said Ogun State Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi.
“He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and [is] receiving medical attention.”
Eyewitness Adeniyi Orojo noted that Joshua was travelling with three others when the crash occurred.
“Joshua was seated behind the driver with another person beside him. There was also a passenger sitting beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them before the crash,” he said.
Orojo added that the passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua died instantly.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) attributed the accident to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, in a statement after the incident on Monday, confirmed that five men were involved, with two fatalities, one injury and two escaping unhurt.
The remains of the deceased, identified as British nationals, were deposited at Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well parked by the side of the road,” Ogungbemide said.
The Ogun State Government expressed condolences to the bereaved families and sympathy to Joshua. Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, described the incident as “deeply unfortunate and painful, particularly with the loss of precious lives.”
He added, “Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the State considers a devastating loss. As we mourn collectively, we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also reacted. In a post on his verified X account on Tuesday, Atiku said he was “deeply saddened” by news of the incident, which occurred in the Makun area of the state, and offered prayers for Joshua’s recovery.
He wrote, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the road accident involving @anthonyjoshua today in Makun, Ogun State. I stand in full solidarity with him during this difficult moment and pray for his swift and complete recovery. My heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of the two individuals who tragically lost their lives in the accident.”
Joshua, who has family roots in Sagamu, was in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul in Miami on 19 December, a fight he won by sixth-round knockout. The bout marked his return to the ring after a 15-month layoff, with plans already underway for a potential clash with Tyson Fury in 2026.
The accident has prompted renewed warnings from the FRSC to motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and excessive speed, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes are high. The damaged Lexus SUV has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division office, while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Joshua remains under medical observation at an undisclosed hospital, while tributes continue to pour in for the two men who lost their lives in the incident.
The Nigerian Army on Monday confirmed that there was a significant military operational success following a US military-led airstrike on Lakurawa insurgent hideouts in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
DAILY POST reports that US military on Thursday last week fired at least twelve tomahawk missiles against the Lakurawa terrorists in parts of Sokoto State.
There has been debate over whether the operation had any impact on the terrorists or not.
Some security experts claimed it was a wrong target, stating that the missiles landed in safe places.
However, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, in a statement, said several camps of the terrorists were destroyed.
According to her, the troops of Combat Intelligence Battalion VII, acting on credible intelligence about terrorist movements along the Kaurau axis, coordinated with US AFRICOM forces to target camps in the Bauni Forest, near Waria and Alkassim villages, on December 25.
She said that follow-up patrols on December 26 confirmed extensive destruction of terrorist positions, significantly degrading their operational capability.
