Former Kano State governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has warned that anyone who betrays an ideology will ultimately fail, stressing that political betrayal does not lead to lasting success.

The comments come at a time of visible internal tensions within the NNPP in Kano State chapter, as debates over the party’s future and its relationship with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the centre continued to deepen.

Kwankwaso made the remarks while addressing beneficiaries of his postgraduate scholarship programme. However, political observers believed the comments were veiled message to his political protege and Kano State governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, and some of his loyalists, who have been pushing for a possible defection to the ruling APC.

Speaking at the event, Kwankwaso said betrayal, described in Hausa language as “Butulci”, has never brought enduring success to anyone in Nigeria or elsewhere.

“Nobody in this country, or anywhere else, has ever succeeded with ‘Butulci’. It doesn’t work that way,” he said. “If you are in doubt, look at our history from 1999 to date. All those who betrayed this group, like other groups, have never succeeded. I don’t even know one.”

He acknowledged that some individuals who abandoned their political base appeared successful for a time, but said their gains were always short-lived.

“They may succeed temporarily—day one, day two, day three. Some even looked like they were succeeding for 10 years. But if you ask them today, where are they now? They are on the floor, flat on the ground,” Kwankwaso added.

The NNPP leader urged the adherents and supporters of the ‘Kwankwasiyya Movement’ to learn from history and remain loyal to the NNPP ideology rather than making costly mistakes.

“I’m telling you this so you can learn from other people’s experience. Don’t try to learn from your own experience, sometimes it can be very, very expensive,” he said.
“Work together as a family. Support the ideology.”

LEADERSHIP reports Kwankwaso has not officially addressed the growing calls by some NNPP members within the Governor Yusuf administration in the state, local government and ward levels for the governor and the party leadership to move to the APC. Governor Yusuf has also remained silent on the development amid sustained speculation over his possible defection.

Nigeria recorded a strong external sector rebound in the third quarter of 2025, posting an overall Balance of Payments surplus of $4.60 billion.

This is a sharp shift from the deficit position in the preceding quarter according to data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, Hakama Sidi Ali (Mrs.), also announced that domestic economic activity strengthened further in December 2025, as the Composite Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) climbed to 57.6 index points.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the apex bank said, “the improvement was supported by a sustained current account surplus of $3.42 billion, supported by stronger trade performance, resilient remittance inflows, increased financial flows, and continued accretion to external reserves.”

According to the report, the goods account recorded a surplus of $4.94 billion during the period, reflecting higher export earnings. Crude oil exports rose to $8.45 billion, while exports of refined petroleum products increased by 44 per cent to $2.29 billion. 

The Bank noted that this trend points to “further progress in domestic refining capacity and Nigeria’s gradual transition from a net importer to a net exporter of refined petroleum products.”

Total goods exports were recorded at $15.24 billion, while imports of refined petroleum products declined by 12.7 per cent, resulting in a stronger trade balance.

Workers’ remittances also remained firm, with the secondary income account registering a surplus of $5.50 billion, out of which $5.24 billion came from inflows sent home by Nigerians in the diaspora.

Developments in the financial account contributed to the positive BOP outcome, as Nigeria posted a net lending position of $0.32 billion. Foreign direct investment inflows rose to $0.72 billion, while portfolio investment inflows were put at $2.51 billion. 

The CBN noted that these figures “reflect improved investor sentiment and continued non-resident participation in domestic financial instruments.”

Nigeria’s external reserves also recorded a notable increase, rising to $42.77 billion as at end-September 2025, compared with $37.81 billion at end-June. The Bank stated that this development strengthened the country’s external buffers during the period under review.

According to the CBN, the Q3 2025 Balance of Payments performance points to firmer external sector conditions, rising investor confidence, and the continuing effects of policy reforms in the foreign exchange market, monetary policy operations, and the domestic energy sector.

In a separate update, the CBN announced that economic activity gained more traction in December 2025, as the Composite PMI remained above the 50-point expansion threshold. 

The December 2025 PMI Survey put the Composite Index at 57.6 index points, which the Bank described as “the strongest activity momentum recorded in about five years.”

The report indicated that major employment-generating sectors sustained expansion during the month. Sectoral PMI readings showed agriculture at 58.5 points, industry at 57.0 points, while the services sector recorded 51.9 points, signaling broad-based growth in business output.

The Survey further revealed that 32 out of the 36 subsectors monitored recorded expansion in production levels, new business orders and employment. According to the Bank, the outcome reflects a steady recovery in domestic demand and rising productive activity, particularly within the non-oil economy.

The CBN attributed the improved PMI readings to the impact of ongoing macroeconomic stabilisation measures and efforts to support the operating environment and business confidence. 

It said these interventions continued to “bolster job creation, production efficiency, and overall optimism about economic prospects in the fourth quarter of 2025.”

The December PMI reading, the Bank added, strengthens expectations of a stable growth outlook as Nigeria moves into the new year.

A section of a building of NIA-AGRIC, a private rice mill in Birnin Kebbi in Kebbi State, collapsed on Tuesday, killing a worker, while five others were trapped under the metal wreckage of the facility.

Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, has visited the site as rescue efforts continued to save the five trapped victims.

Senator Tafida, who led a high-powered delegation on an on-the-spot assessment visit to the facility on Tuesday evening, said the visit was to ascertain the extent of the damage and oversee the emergency response.

A combined team of the State Fire Service and emergency response workers has been engaged in continuous efforts to locate and rescue the trapped workers.

Reports stated that the cause of the collapse was yet to be ascertained. However, the deputy governor assured that a full investigation would be launched after rescue activities.

Tafida pledged that the state government will continue supporting the rescue operation until all victims are brought out.

Residents of Jigawa State have expressed deep concern over the rising spate of road traffic accidents that killed at least 38 lives within four days.

They are calling for immediate revival of transport Policy introduced by the administration of former Governor of the state Sule Lamido.

The reactions followed three separate accidents recorded across Ringim and Dutse local government areas, leaving dozens dead and several others injured with properties worth millions of Naira destroyed.

It was reported on Friday that, no fewer than 11 persons lost their lives while 12 others sustained injuries in a crash along the Ringim–Sankara–Beguwa Road.

The accident involved a Volkswagen Golf conveying about 23 passengers. Preliminary investigations, according to the FRSC, linked the crash to overloading and excessive speeding, which resulted in a tyre burst and loss of control.

Barely two days earlier, another fatal accident in Dutse Local Government Area claimed 22 lives when a trailer conveying sand collided with two Gulf vehicles transporting passengers to a wedding ceremony along the Kwanar Huguna–Dutse Municipal road. The police confirmed that several others sustained injuries in the incident.

In a related development, five members of a family were also killed in a lone accident at Bandawa village in Ringim LGA when a vehicle reportedly veered off the road while trying to avoid a goat, hitting a tree. Two other occupants survived with injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

While reacting on the tragic incidents, some of the residents described the frequency of the accidents as alarming and unacceptable. They stated that the  state is blessed with relatively good roads, human factors particularly reckless driving, speeding, and overloading of passengers and goods are the major  causes of the deadly crashes.

A Dutse resident Malam Muntari said It is painful that people are dying on roads that are actually good, I think the problem is not the roads; it is the drivers. Some load vehicles beyond limit and drive with speed.

They lamented that the tragedies continue despite the state’s improved road infrastructure, therefore blaming Overloading, Reckless Driving Despite Improved Roads.

Another  residents also condemned the practice of conveying passengers alongside heavy goods, describing it as dangerous and irresponsible.

“It’s quite unfortunate, the boot of a car meant for goods is now a permanent seat of four passengers in Jigawa State while the goods are loaded on top of the vehicle ”

“A single commercial vehicle is now loading eleven to twelve full grown passengers, three in the front, four in the back and another four at the boot and if those passengers have children they will also be part of the vehicle”

They appealed to the FRSC, police, and other relevant agencies to intensify enforcement of traffic laws and punish violators to serve as a deterrent.

They also called on the state government to revive stricter transport policies introduced by former Governor Sule Lamido aimed at reducing casualties.

During the administration of former Governor Sule Lamido, he restricted commercial drivers vehicles to four passengers, one in the front seat and three at the back.

They noted that, the policy have saved many and If it is brought back and enforced, drivers will think twice before overloading their vehicles.

Residents also condemned the practice of conveying passengers alongside heavy goods, describing it as dangerous and irresponsible.

They, however, urged passengers to support in the fight against overloading and over speeding.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has officially begun its e-membership registration exercise across the 36 States and the FCT.

The National Chairman of the party, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda made this known in a post on his verified X handle on Wednesday.

Prof Yilwatda stressed that the exercise will take place at respective wards across the country.

A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber, Ibrahim Mohammed, captured by troops of Operation HADIM KAI in collaboration with hunters in Yobe State has revealed chilling details of how he was recruited, paid and deployed to carry out deadly attacks on worshippers in Maiduguri, admitting that he received up to N100,000 for suicide bombing missions.

Ibrahim, who confessed to involvement in the December 24 suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, said the operation was planned and executed under the directive of Boko Haram commanders operating between Adamawa State and the Mandara Mountains.

Zagazola quoted him as saying during interrogation: “My name is Ibrahim from Michika in Adamawa. We came to Maiduguri to plant bombs in Izala Mosque. We were sent by our leaders, Adamu and Abubakar, who gave us two IEDs to plant in the mosque.”

The suspect disclosed that suicide bombing had become a paid assignment within the terror network. “I was paid money ranging from N70,000 to N100,000 per mission,” he said.

The Gamboru Market Mosque attack claimed five lives and left 32 worshippers injured, plunging  Maiduguri town into confusion during the festive period.

Narrating how the attack was executed, Ibrahim said the operatives exploited periods when mosques were empty to plant the explosive devices.

“We came after Zuhur and Asr prayers when the mosque was empty. We entered pretending to pray. My colleague was digging to plant the IED in the middle of the mosque while I was digging by the side,” he said.

According to him, the devices were coupled and timed ahead of the Maghrib prayers.

“As Muslim faithful gathered to pray Maghrib, after the first raka’at, we detonated the bomb. We set the timing for five minutes. Shortly after, I ran to the market area,” he said.

Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas commiserates with the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ over the unfortunate demise of Seven members of the Union who lost their lives in a road crash on Monday.

In a statement issued in Jalingo on Wednesday morning and signed by Emmanuel Bello, Special Adviser, Media and Digital Communications to Governor Kefas, the governor also extends his commiseration to the families of Seven Staff of the Nigerian Television Authority NTA who lost their lives in the unfortunate fatal crash on their way to Gombe after attending a wedding in Kaltungo.

Governor Kefas noted that journalists, as members of the Forth Estate of the Realm play pivotal roles in shaping opinion and steering national discuss and so the sudden death of so many journalists at a time is a national disaster.

The statement reads in parts that “Taraba State governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas has received with shock the demise of Seven staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in an auto crash on their way to Gombe from a wedding in Kaltungo.

“Governor Kefas described the accident as a national tragedy. He added that the staff died in active service, stressing that their labour to the country would never be forgotten.

“Governor Kefas, who specifically condoled with the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), said that the union has suffered an irreparable loss. Dr. Kefas reiterated his support for the union, stressing that journalist welfare is key to press freedom in the country. He also condoled with the immediate families of the victims. Sympathising further with the family, he assured them that the service rendered by the deceased would remain indelible in the heart of colleagues and the general public.

“Meanwhile, Dr. Kefas has also condoled with the government and people of Gombe state. He prayed for the repose of the souls of the departed”.

‎A Nigerian man has reacted to the car crash involving former heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua.

‎Earlier, GistReel reported that Anthony Joshua, who recently defeated YouTuber boxer, Jake Paul, was involved in a car crash in Ogun State on December 29, 2025.

‎The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the deaths of two people, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, who were close friends and team members.

‎The boxer, seated in the backseat, sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

A group, National Grassroots Movement (NGM), has raised the alarm over the alleged plot to remove Godswill Akpabio as  Senate President.

The plot, according to the NGM, was a calculated move to destabilise the National Assembly and undermine President Bola Tinubu ‘s administration ahead of the 2027 election.

In a statement by the Hon. Tunde Felix, National Coordinator and Alhaji Musa Mustapha, National Publicity Secretary, the group fingered a prominent senator from the South south as the mastermind of the plot.

According to the NGM, the South south senator intends to take over as Senate President, alleging his desperation to cause confusion in the National Assembly.

The statement reads in parts: “The National Grassroots Movement raises the alarm over credible political maneuvers pointing to a well-coordinated scheme by a bloc of Northern senators to remove the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for selfish and destabilizing purposes.

‘This scheme is not motivated by principle, reform, or legislative conscience, but by desperation—a calculated power grab fueled by wounded pride and the pursuit of political relevance, aimed at installing a prominent Senator from the Southsouth as Senate President through orchestrated alliances and sectional maneuvering.

“The National Grassroots Movement views this as a dangerous escalation by the Senator, who has lost political confidence within the Presidency and is now seeking relevance by turning the National Assembly into a theatre of distraction—intended to slow, frustrate, and weaken the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“Senator Godswill Akpabio has provided steady and nationally balanced leadership to the 10th National Assembly, refusing to turn the Senate into an opposition arena. His collaborative approach with the Executive has been crucial in stabilizing governance at a time when Nigeria requires discipline, unity, and decisive action”.

The statement further reads: “While leadership changes in the National Assembly are constitutionally permissible, deliberately engineering such changes through premeditated alliances, sectional calculations, or personal vendettas—rather than genuine national interest and broad consensus—raises serious concerns about motive and its impact on legislative stability.

“The National Grassroots Movement condemns any attempt to weaponize ethnicity, region, or numerical strength to seize Senate leadership. The National Assembly must not become a battleground for personal scores or fading political influence.

“The Movement therefore warns, unequivocally, that Nigerians are watching. Party members are alert. Any effort to create crisis for narrow ambition will be resisted politically, exposed publicly, and rejected morally.

“The Senator must be reminded that the APC is not a vehicle for personal vendettas, nor is the National Assembly a tool to destabilize a government elected by Nigerians. Loyalty to the party, respect for institutions, and commitment to national stability must take precedence over personal ambition.

“The National Grassroots Movement calls on all party members, patriotic Nigerians, and democratic stakeholders to remain vigilant, reject manipulation, and defend institutional integrity. Sectional ambition must not override national interest, and anyone attempting to sabotage the Tinubu administration or destabilize the Senate will be held accountable

‘The National Grassroots Movement stands resolutely with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the leadership of the 10th National Assembly, and the Tinubu administration, and will mobilize politically and intellectually to defend legislative stability, party unity, and democratic order”.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has stated that Peter Obi will soon reveal the party through which he intends to contest in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview Tanko emphasised that the decision rests solely with Obi.

“A lot of people are waiting for Peter Obi to announce the party he will contest under.

“This shows that he is not only sought after in Nigeria but also admired globally—a truly valuable asset.

“We will allow Obi to make that announcement in his own time.

“He has consistently shown that he works closely with a coalition and is a team player.

“His eventual decision will make everyone happy. Obi has always been actively involved in this coalition, contributing to the political party it has produced.

“When he makes his pronouncement, it will be welcomed by all because he is committed to teamwork and to a Nigeria that is free from those who act against the country’s best interests.

“So, His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, will make his announcement very soon,” Tanko said.
