Alleged $9.7m terrorism financing: Court remands Bauchi Finance commissioner, others
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Wednesday, arraigned Yakubu Adamu, Commissioner of Finance, Bauchi State, and his co-defendants on alleged $9.7 million terrorism financing.
They were arraigned on a 10-count charge before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Adamu, the 1st defendant, was arraigned alongside Balarabe Abdullahi Ilelah, Aminu Mohammed Bose and Kabiru Yahaya Mohammed, who are the 2nd to 4th defendants, respectively.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts preferred against them by the anti-graft agency.
Following their not-guilty plea, EFCC’s lawyer, Samuel Chime, sought a trial date to enable them to present their witnesses and evidence in the case.
The defence counsel, Gordy Uche, SAN, however, informed the court of separate motions for bail filed on behalf of the defendants.
He said the motions, filed on Dec. 30, had been served on the prosecution.
Chime, who acknowledged the receipt of the bail applications, said a joint counter affidavit had been filed to oppose the request.
When the judge asked if the facts in the motions were the same, the defence lawyer explained that all the facts were the same except the averment that the 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants came voluntarily on their own accord to honour the EFCC’s invitation.
“The 1st defendant was arrested,” he added.
Justice Nwite then directed Uche to move his motions.
Moving the motion, the lawyer said the application sought an order of the court admitting the defendants to bail pending the trial.
He said it was attached with four exhibits.
He said after the prosecution served them with a counter affidavit, a further affidavit was also filed.
Uche said in their reply on points of law to the counter affidavit, there was nowhere in the proof of evidence that aligned with those conditions stated in Section 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.
He said the prosecution’s proof of evidence did not specifically link his clients to the offence of terrorism financing as alleged.
He urged the court to appreciate the circumstances and exercise its discretion in favour of the defendants.
“My lord, do not be carried away by the nature of the charge.
“I urge you to give it a liberal view and grant them bail on liberal terms,” he said.
The lawyer restated that the continued detention of Adamu had affected about 60,000 Bauchi State workers who were yet to be paid their salaries.
Responding, the EFCC’s counsel said a counter affidavit was filed to oppose the application for bail.
Chime prayed the court to refuse their bail applications, bearing in mind Paragraphs 15 and 16 of the commission’s counter affidavit.
In Paragraph 15 of the counter affidavit, the EFCC argued that it was firmly opposed to the grant of bail to the defendants, having regard to the terrorism-related allegations, the money laundering counts, and the magnitude of the sums stated on the face of the charge.
“That the 1st defendant/applicant (Adamu) is also facing another pending criminal charge bordering on money laundering at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in Charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/694/2025.”
Justice Nwite, who adjourned the matter until Jan. 5 for ruling, ordered that the defendants be remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the decision.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/705/2025, was dated and filed on Dec. 30 by Chime.
They were alleged to have conspired to provide funds in the aggregate sum of 2,300,000,000 U.S. dollars in cash for the benefit of Bello Bodejo and persons associated with him, pursuant to approvals granted by Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.
The said funds were alleged to be used, in whole or in part, to finance a terrorist or terrorist group.
The offence is contrary to Section 26(1) and punishable under Section 21(2)(a) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
They were accused of being involved in an arrangement which resulted in the sum of about 500,000.00 U.S. dollars being delivered in cash to Bodejo and persons associated with him for the purpose of terrorism and for the benefit of a proscribed terrorist group pursuant to approvals granted by Gov. Bala Mohammed.
The offence is contrary to Section 21(3)(b) and punishable under Section 21(4)(a) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Count four accused the defendants, including Jaja and Liman (who are at large), of having conspired to disguise the origin of the 2,300,000.00 U.S. dollars, being Bauchi State Government’s funds, routed through Bureau de Change (BDC) operators and other nominees and converting the same to U.S. dollars, for the benefit of Bello Bodejo and persons associated with him.
It said this was pursuant to approvals granted by Gov. Mohammed, having reasonable grounds to know that the said funds formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act.
The offence is contrary to Section 21(a) and punishable under Section 18(3) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
In count eight, the defendants, including Jaja and Liman (who are at large), were alleged to have, sometime in the year 2024, conspired to disguise the origin of the sum of about 6,950,000.00 US dollars for the benefit of Yakubu Adamu, the Finance Commissioner, being proceeds of unlawful activity routed from Bauchi State Government’s funds through the BDC operators.
The offence is contrary to Section 21(a) and punishable under Section 18(3) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, among other counts.
NAN reports that Alhaji Bello Bodejo is the president of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.
Adamu, the 1st defendant, alongside a firm, Ayab Agro Products and Freight Company Ltd, is also facing another money laundering charge involving N4.6 billion before Justice Nwite.
In the six-count charge, Adamu was alleged to have committed the offence while acting as the Branch Manager of Polaris Bank Ltd, Bauchi, sometime between June 2023 and December 2023.
The defendants, alongside others, were alleged to have facilitated and agreed to the conversion, concealment and use of funds in the sum of about N4,650,000,000.00 availed by Polaris Bank under the guise of financing the supply of motorcycles to Bauchi State Government through Emmanuel Asomugha General Enterprises.
However, they were accused of not having supplied the motorcycles. (NAN)

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has warned that betraying the Kwankwasiyya movement would lead to political failure in Kano State.
Citing historical examples, Kwankwaso said since 1999, individuals have lost political influence after leaving the movement.
Kwankwaso’s statement comes amid rumors that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, might leave the NNPP for the APC.
In a video message shared widely online, Kwankwaso spoke directly to members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, urging them to remain loyal.
According to him, some former members enjoyed brief periods of progress after leaving the group, whether for a short time or even several years, but eventually lost their influence.
He pointed out that certain politicians in Kano once held power for nearly a decade but have since disappeared from the political scene.
Kwankwaso encouraged people to learn from past examples rather than repeating the same mistakes themselves, noting that personal experience can be a very costly teacher.
According to Kwankwaso: “Some of you have decided to cross the line to go to the other side, if you know them, advise them that nobody in this country or elsewhere has ever succeeded with betrayal, it doesn’t work that way.
“And if you are in doubt, look at our history even those from 1999 till date, all those who betrayed this group, they have never succeeded and I don’t know why.
“They may succeed temporarily on day one, two, three; year one, two. Some in this state were looking like they were succeeding for 10 years, where are they now? They are flat on the floor.”

In a country where security agencies are often judged by public drama rather than quiet effectiveness, the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2025 offers a markedly different narrative. Under the leadership of its Director-General, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, the Service has pursued reforms anchored on intelligence professionalism, inter-agency coordination and respect for the rule of law—outcomes that are gradually reshaping Nigeria’s internal security landscape.
Since assuming office in 2024, Ajayi has steered the DSS away from reactive enforcement towards intelligence-driven prevention. This shift became more pronounced in 2025, as the Service focused on penetrating terrorist cells, disrupting kidnapping syndicates and tracking arms-trafficking networks across the North-East, North-West and parts of the Middle Belt. Several threats were neutralised before manifesting into attacks, underscoring the value of proactive intelligence over post-incident response.
A notable feature of the DSS’s performance in 2025 has been improved inter-agency cooperation. Historically, rivalry and poor intelligence sharing weakened Nigeria’s security response. Under Ajayi, the DSS strengthened intelligence fusion with the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies, reducing duplication and enhancing response time. This coordination contributed to better situational awareness and more coherent security operations across multiple theatres.
Beyond operational outcomes, the DSS also recorded gains in institutional credibility. In a significant departure from past practice, the Service reviewed legacy detention cases, released individuals held without sufficient legal basis and complied with court orders on compensation. These actions attracted commendation from legal practitioners, civil society groups and public commentators, who viewed them as evidence that national security can be pursued within the bounds of the law.
Public and individual commendations for the DSS leadership also became more visible in 2025. State governments and community leaders in volatile areas acknowledged the role of timely intelligence in preventing violence and restoring calm. Security analysts and retired officers praised Ajayi’s restrained leadership style, noting that his emphasis on professionalism, discretion and internal discipline aligns with global best practices for democratic intelligence agencies.
Notably, Ajayi’s evolving leadership profile also received recognition beyond traditional security circles. In 2025, the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI) recognised the DSS Director-General as a champion of press freedom, citing improved engagement with media institutions and a more restrained approach to press-related security issues. The recognition was significant in a sector historically defined by tension between security agencies and the media, and it reinforced perceptions of a leadership style inclined towards balance rather than confrontation.
Internally, the DSS experienced morale-boosting reforms. Welfare, training and career progression received renewed attention, strengthening professionalism within the Service. Training programmes were updated to address emerging threats such as cyber-enabled crime and transnational criminal networks. The appointment of the first female Deputy Director-General further signalled institutional maturity and a commitment to merit-based leadership.
Community engagement also formed a quiet but critical pillar of the DSS’s approach. By strengthening local intelligence networks and early-warning mechanisms in areas prone to communal tension, the Service improved its preventive capacity, reinforcing the principle that effective intelligence begins at the grassroots.
Nigeria’s security challenges remain daunting. Terrorism, banditry and organised crime have not disappeared. However, the DSS’s trajectory in 2025 suggests a clearer sense of direction. Under DG Tosin Ajayi, the Service has shown that intelligence work can be firm without being reckless, secretive without being lawless, and effective without undermining public trust.
If sustained, these reforms could help reposition the DSS as a stabilising force within Nigeria’s democratic framework—an intelligence institution defined less by controversy and more by quiet competence.
Bauchi State Governor, Sen. Bala Mohammed, on Wednesday, denied any involvement in terrorism, calling claims linking him to terrorist activities “shocking and absurd.”
“I was shocked to hear that I have been accused of terrorism as a sitting governor. I am not a terrorist, I have nothing to do with terrorism, and I will never condone criminality of any kind,” the governor stated.
The governor made the remarks at the Executive Chambers of the Government House, Bauchi, while receiving an Award of Excellence as a Safety Ambassador from the Safety Institute of Nigeria.
Mohammed described the allegation as ironic given his longstanding efforts to promote peace, security, and community development in Bauchi State.
“I have been an ambassador of safety without even knowing it until today. This award belongs to the people of Bauchi State. Together, we worked for peace and security, and together we earned this recognition,” he said.
The governor also expressed concern over what he described as the unjust treatment of his Commissioner for Finance, currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), calling the situation part of a broader pattern of political persecution.
“Despite my constitutional immunity as a governor, my name was mentioned in a motion before a court of law, while my commissioner remains incarcerated. These are troubling developments in a democratic society,” he said.
Bala Mohammed lamented what he called the shrinking space for tolerance in Nigeria’s political environment, stressing that political differences should not be criminalised.
“Politics has become something else in this country. You don’t have to denigrate people or label them criminals simply because they belong to the opposition or refuse to join the ruling party,” he added.
He said he had deliberately remained quiet in the interest of peace and stability but warned that silence should not be mistaken for weakness.
“I have kept quiet for the sake of peace and security and for the common people, but I am not a coward,” the governor stated.
Bala Mohammed also criticised the Federal Government’s fiscal policies, particularly the implementation of the new tax law, which he said would further impoverish Nigerians and weaken state governments.
He maintained that Bauchi State remains one of the most peaceful states in the North due to inclusive governance and cooperation across party lines.
“We have APC, PDP and NNPP in Bauchi, and we are living together in peace. That is democracy. That is tolerance,” he said.
Earlier, a Life Member of the Safety Institute of Nigeria, Dr Haruna Malgwi, said the award was given after a thorough assessment of the governor’s safety policies and interventions across the state.
“This institute does not give awards lightly. His Excellency met all the criteria and deserved to be honoured as a Safety Ambassador,” Malgwi said.

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has declined to restrain the Federal Government from going ahead with its January 1 timeline for the implementation of new tax laws in the country.
The court, in a ruling delivered by Justice Bello Kawu, turned down an ex parte motion filed by the Incorporated Trustees of African Initiative for Abuse of Public Trust.
Justice Kawu held that the court lacked the power to stop the implementation of legislation already signed by the appropriate authority, without concrete evidence of any wrongdoing.
He stressed that the litigant failed to adduce any evidence to warrant the grant of a restraining order against FG.
“I have considered the application together with the affidavit in support.
“I have also considered the submission of the learnt counsel for the claimant/applicant together with the judicial authorities cited, and I am of the strong view that the court lacks power to stop implementation of a law already signed by the appropriate authority without concrete evidence of any wrongdoing.
“At this preliminary stage, it will be difficult if not impossible to prove any wrongdoing because at this stage, the court should be careful not to touch on the main issue.
“It is my considered opinion that granting an injunction at this preliminary stage will be touching the subject matter in the main suit.
“It should be noted that once an Act is signed into law, it can only be repealed by the lawmakers or any offending section set aside by the court of law; be that as it may, an ex parte application cannot be used to set aside the coming into force of any Act already signed into law or gazetted.
“In view of the above, the implementation of the Tax Act 2025 and other related acts will commence on January 1, 2026, and continue to be in force pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion before this court,” Justice Kawu held in a certified true copy of the ruling that was delivered on December 23 but made available on Wednesday.
The court deferred further hearing in the case till January 9, 2026.
Specifically, the group had, in the suit, prayed the court to halt the planned implementation of the new tax laws, pending the resolution of controversies surrounding it.
Cited as defendants in the matter were the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the National Assembly.
In its motion marked M/17240/2025, the group sought an order of interim injunction to restrain FG, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the National Assembly, or any of its agencies from implementing any of the provisions of the gazetted Nigeria Tax Act (2025), the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (2025), the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act (2025), or the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act (2025) for any reasons, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.
It equally sought an order of interim injunction restraining the President, either by himself or through any agency of the Federal Government created under the Nigeria Tax Act (2025), the Nigeria Tax Administration Act (2025), the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act (2025) or the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act (2025), from implementing the provisions of the Acts in any states of the federation where applicable, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
Meanwhile, though the court refused to grant the interim orders, it, however, allowed substituted service of the processes on the defendants.
While it gave the plaintiff the nod to serve FG through the office of the AGF, it held that documents meant for the Senate President, the House of Reps Speaker, and the National Assembly should be served on them through the Clerk of the National Assembly.

Borno State governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has appointed the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, as the Chancellor of the State-owned Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri, Borno State.
Speaking at the presentation of the appointment letter to the monarch at his palace in Ile-Ife on Tuesday, Governor Zulum said the appointment was driven by the monarch’s passion to add value to the institution.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mallam Bukar Tijani, Zulum said Oba Ogunwusi, who currently serves as the Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is not only an advocate for quality education for youths, but also a royal father of many endeavours.
“We presented to His Imperial Royal Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, his appointment letter as the Chancellor of the Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. This university has been there, but it is having its first graduates under the new name. It is not a hidden secret but common knowledge that the Ooni of Ife is a royal father who has a lot behind him, not only in the education field but in other endeavours of life.
“He is also Chancellor to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and he also has his own University. So, His Excellency the Executive Governor is a very close person to the Ooni of Ife, and the Ooni has accepted to be the Chancellor of the university so that he can add value,” Tijani added.
Speaking on the bond between Ife and Borno Kingdoms, he said the relationship dates back centuries, and the appointment rekindled the ties between the two ancient kingdoms.
“The Ooni of Ife is not only a royal father in South-West Nigeria; he is a royal father in the whole of Nigeria, West Africa, and Africa. And as I have mentioned earlier, the Kingdom of Kanem Borno goes a long way, and the Ife Kingdom also goes a very long way.
“Both kingdoms are old kingdoms in Africa that have been there for more than 1,000 years. And this appointment rekindle this relations, and it is a testament that traditional relations can be rejuvenated in order to a better united Nigeria,” he added.
Responding to his appointment, Oba Ogunwusi applauded the Borno State government for finding him worthy of the appointment as he vowed that he would add value to the development and realisation of the institution’s vision.
He also traced the relationship between the Ile-Ife Kingdom and Kanem Bornu Empire, disclosing that their progenitors were cousins and they remain one of the oldest empires in Africa, which was never invaded by
external forces.
Ooni said, “I will not let you down, I will bring value to the realisation of the vision of the university. I am very passionate about education. This same
energy and passion that I am using for my own university and the University of Nigeria, I will bring to your univer sity.
“I have a strong connection with Kanem-Bornu. We are cousins, we have a strong bond, and we have a lot of things in common. We are the only
kingdom that was never overtaken by the Uthman Dan Fodio movement. If you go through history, we are the two oldest kingdoms.
“You are welcoming me back home. I love dynamism, don’t make me a figurehead9 chancellor, I want to add value, you should give me a task to deliver, I will do it gladly.”
The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCT, has sensitized hundreds of food vendors, hoteliers, quarries, plazas, business owners, Banks on double taxation in the nation’s capital.
The FCT lamented that despite clear and repeated judgments of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court affirming the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA’s exclusive authority over public health and environmental services, business owners in Abuja are bringing complaints of harassment by the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC.
During a sanitisation programme bringing together business owners from the hospitality, food, and service sectors, some of the owners complained of persistent demand notices, threats of sealing, and court summonses by AMAC, often for the same services they have already paid for under FCTA, raising renewed allegations of double taxation and regulatory abuse.
The controversy is anchored on two landmark court decisions that invalidated AMAC’s actions. In Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) v. Abuja Municipal Area Council (Suit No. FCT/HC/CV/546/2022), delivered on March 13, 2023, Hon. Justice Muawiyah Baba Idris declared AMAC’s 2020 Environmental Sanitation and Premises Inspection Bye-Law illegal and void for lacking the mandatory ministerial approval required under Section 43 of the Public Health Act.
The court held that AMAC had no authority to legislate or enforce public health regulations, describing the move as a usurpation of powers reserved for the Federal Ministers of Health and Environment.
That position was further reinforced on February 14, 2025, in Devyani International Nigeria Ltd. (KFC) v. AMAC (Suit No. CV/1642/2024), where Hon. Justice Y. Halilu ruled that food safety regulation, medical fitness certification, and environmental health services fall squarely within the FCTA’s jurisdiction. Relying on the National Health Act 2014, the FCT Establishment Order No. 1 of 2004, and the earlier decision in Dunes Investment & Global Services v. AMAC (July 12, 2023), the court described AMAC’s actions as unlawful trespass. It ordered a refund of N1,222,000 wrongfully collected and issued a perpetual injunction restraining AMAC from further enforcement.
The Director of Enforcement of FCTA, Ojo Adewale, who spoke to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, said, “So the challenge is that despite the provision of the law, the national constitution and the FCT Act which empowers us to carry out inspection, both to the food industry, construction, quality and everything, AMAC and other area councils, are trying… they are dragging this assignment with fct.
“Now the challenge is that they are trying to drag this assignment with FCT, but by question of the law, it is strictly, statically a duty of FCT, and they go about forcing people to pay to them. So it has been a very serious issue, you know, subjecting the operators of foods, hotels, companies to double taxation.
“And we want the public to know that even if anybody comes and want to hold your business for you to pay, then if you have the law in your hand, you can tell them that this law I’m looking at and this judicial pronouncement does not say I should pay you, therefore I will not pay you. I’d rather go to FCTA and make my payment,” he said explaining the reason for the enlightenment programme.
“And if you pay to FCTA, I want to state that clearly and AMAC want to still charge you for the same assignment, we have a legal unit who can actually stand for you. We cannot allow you after you’ve paid to us, and they still want to force you to pay to them. It will not happen. We have the legal department, and we have the legal officers who will actually go and defend them in the court anywhere they take them to.”
Rebecca Aminu, a business owner affected by the enforcement, expressed frustration while speaking to journalists. “We’ve complied fully with FCTA requirements, yet AMAC keeps issuing notices for the same certifications and threatening to seal our premises. This harassment is crippling small businesses in Abuja,” she said.
Another operator, Folorunsho Emmanuel, echoed similar concerns. “Once you pay FCTA, AMAC comes next asking for the same money for the same service. When you resist, you’re dragged to court. This double taxation is unsustainable,” he stated.
Speaking to the press, Alex Ogenna Ibe FCTA Legal representative, reiterated the subsisting court orders and warned against continued defiance. He cautioned that flouting valid judgments amounts to contempt of court and disclosed that the affected FCTA is already considering further legal redress to compel compliance and protect business operations.
The Port Authority Police (Western) Command has charged all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and heads of departments to remain vigilant and proactive, particularly as the command crosses over into the new year.
The Commissioner of Police, Toyin Agbaminoja, also emphasised the need to sustain a high level of alertness across all port formations to prevent criminal activities, protect critical national assets, and ensure the safety of port users, personnel, and the general public.
Agbaminoja stated this at the final management conference for the year as part of ongoing efforts to review operational activities, strengthen leadership coordination, and prepare the Command for effective policing as the year draws to a close.
She urged officers to maintain discipline, strengthen intelligence-led policing, enhance inter-agency collaboration, and uphold the command’s zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct.
She reassured stakeholders and members of the public of its unwavering commitment to maritime security, public safety, and the protection of Nigeria’s port environment during the festive period and beyond.
The conference, which had in attendance Deputy Commissioners of Police, Assistant Commissioners of Police, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs), provided a platform to assess the command’s performance, review maritime security strategies, and outline operational priorities for the new year.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Isaac Hundeyin, noted in a statement on Wednesday that a major highlight of the event was the formal decoration of the Divisional Police Officer, Roro Port Division, CSP Francis Araunah, who was promoted to the substantive rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP).
Agbaminoja congratulated the officer on his well-deserved promotion, noting that it reflects his dedication, professionalism, and consistent commitment to duty.
The command also held a valedictory session in honour of the outgoing Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ports CID, DCP Amabua Ashe, who has proceeded to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos.
The commissioner commended DCP Amabua Ashe for her outstanding service, leadership, and contributions to strengthening investigative and operational efficiency within the command, and wished her success in her new national assignment.
Also, Agbaminoja formally welcomed the new Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ports CID, DCP Folarin Adedeji, charging him to build on existing achievements and further enhance intelligence-driven investigations and professionalism within the Command.

Ibadan indigenes and residents have been urged to make New Year resolutions that will promote peaceful co-existence, unity, socio-economic rejuvenation, security of life and property, cultural values and monumental developments in all ramifications of life in Ibadanland.
The New Year celebration message was contained in a press release signed by Chief Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga, the Chief Press Secretary to His Imperial Majesty, Oba ( Dr ) Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja (Arusa1), the Olubadan of Ibadanland, while congratulating both the indigenes and residents of the ancient city for seeing the end of the year 2025 and happily entering the year 2026 hale and hearty.
The paramount ruler said, “I urge you all to be resolute on the progress and unity of Ibadanland to jointly realise the modern Ibadanland of our dream.
“As for me, I have resolved to use the rest of my life to serve God and humanity as a good example for others to follow,” the monarch further disclosed.
Oba Ladoja used the occasion to enjoin all Ibadan traditional title holders to key into his vision of moving Ibadan forward for the benefit of all, especially in the areas of security, urban renewal, putting an end to land grabbing, resuscitation of moribund companies and preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage.
He commended the security operatives in Ibadanland, as well as Oyo State, for their improved efforts in securing the lives and property of the people before and during the celebration, urging them not to rest on their oars.
He wished all and Sundry a happy and prosperous new year.

Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, reaffirmed his membership of the national coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging Nigerians to unite across political, ethnic, and religious lines to rescue the country from worsening socio-economic hardship and democratic decline.
The announcement was made at a historic gathering at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, which drew prominent leaders, former governors, legislators, youth, and women leaders.
The event was anchored by Sen. Victor Umeh, who masterfully explained the purpose and import of the gathering, with Chief Simeon Okeke serving as chairman. Chief Okeke highlighted Enugu’s historical significance as the capital of the old Eastern Region, calling on Igbos to ensure that the message of unity and progress was carried forward.
Obi told the gathering that Nigeria had reached a defining moment that required clarity of purpose, courage, and decisive collective action.
He said that as 2025 comes to a close, the country must embark on a new struggle for true independence, founded on self-determination, human equality, and national reunification.
He criticised a small political elite for capturing state institutions and diverting them from serving the Nigerian people, noting that many former beneficiaries of democratic governance had become complicit in electoral injustice and the erosion of democratic norms.
He warned that any attempts to manipulate or rig future elections would be resisted through lawful and legitimate means, stressing that the will of the Nigerian people is sacrosanct and non-negotiable.
Obi called for urgent reforms of the electoral process, including strengthening the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), strict adherence to electoral laws, transparent transmission of results, and credible elections in 2027 as critical steps toward restoring public trust and responsive governance.
Describing Nigeria as a nation in grave distress, Obi cited widespread poverty, youth unemployment, insecurity, and deepening disunity as evidence of governance failure.
He noted that over 130 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, while millions of young people remain unemployed, fueling frustration and despair.
Despite these challenges, he remained optimistic that Nigeria could be transformed into a functional, productive, and inclusive nation.
Obi argued that Nigeria’s fundamental problem is not a lack of human or natural resources but a failure of leadership and unity.
He condemned a political class that thrives on division, rewards mediocrity, and feeds on corruption, stressing that ordinary Nigerians are neither lazy nor incompetent but constrained by a system rigged against merit and hard work.
Drawing comparisons with Rwanda and Indonesia, he highlighted how nations with fewer resources had achieved remarkable socio-economic progress through honest leadership, national consensus, and effective resource management.
Obi also criticised current fiscal policies, particularly ongoing controversies surrounding tax laws, arguing that taxation should enrich citizens rather than deepen poverty. He warned that taxing the poor undermines national unity and fails to create wealth for the people.
The gathering witnessed a strong show of support from political and community leaders. High Chief Ben Obi emphasised that extensive consultations across the country had revealed the urgent need for credible leadership, describing the formation of a new Igbo political block as a patriotic mission to rescue the nation from callous leaders.
Victor Umeh announced that all Labour Party members, including Obi, had formally resigned to join the ADC. Emeka Ihedioha made a motion for all National Assembly members present to follow Obi into the ADC, seconded unanimously by Prof. Osita Ogbu.
Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, there and then, announced his resignation from APGA, pledging loyalty to Obi, while Aisha Yusuf declared her intention to become a card-carrying member of the ADC for the first time, inspired by Obi’s leadership.
Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, who was present, expressed his desire that Mr. Peter Obi become the presidential candidate of the ADC. “I am one of the old men who feel it is time to give room to younger people,” he said.
Many people representing various groups also spoke. The youth leader, Chinonso Obasi, added, “Today is a day that the Lord has made. With the youth actively involved, the movement will be essentially driven by young Nigerians.”
Speaking on behalf of women, Josephine Anineh emphasised that leadership vacancies in Aso Rock would soon open and that Peter Obi was best placed to occupy them.

David Mark, and Chairman of the ADC, highlighted the party’s founding principles of equality, justice, and progressiveness, praising the South-East’s support and pledging that the party would uphold internal democracy, respect its members, create jobs, and provide productive and inclusive leadership.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised one terrorist during an ambush operation in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation took place at about 6:05 p.m. on December 28 in the Ladantar area of Bama local government.
The sources said troops of the 151 Task Force Battalion, stationed at Forward Operating Base Mayanti, laid the ambush alongside volunteer forces along the Ladantar axis.
They explained that the ambush team came into contact with the terrorists at about 11:45 p.m., leading to a gun battle that resulted in the killing of one terrorist, while others “fled in disarray.”
The sources added that there were no casualties among the troops during the operation.
They also said the troops recovered a fabric mat believed to belong to the terrorists.

A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber, Ibrahim Mohammed, who was arrested by troops of Operation HADIN KAI in collaboration with local hunters in Yobe State, has disclosed details of how he was allegedly recruited, paid, and deployed to carry out attacks on worshippers in Maiduguri.
During interrogation, Ibrahim reportedly confessed to his involvement in the December 24 suicide bombing at the Gamboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, which left five people dead and 32 others injured.
The attack occurred during the festive period, throwing the city into confusion.
According to security sources quoted by Zagazola, the suspect said the operation was coordinated by Boko Haram commanders operating between Adamawa State and the Mandara Mountains.
“My name is Ibrahim. I am from Michika in Adamawa State,”he was quoted as saying.
“We were sent to Maiduguri by our leaders, Adamu and Abubakar, to plant bombs in an Izala mosque. They gave us two improvised explosive devices (IEDs).”
Ibrahim claimed that suicide bombing had become a paid assignment within the insurgent group, adding that he received between ₦70,000 and ₦100,000 for each mission.
“I was paid money for every operation I carried out,”he said.
He further explained how the attackers allegedly took advantage of periods when mosques were less crowded to plant the explosives.
“We went after Zuhur and Asr prayers when the mosque was empty. We entered pretending to pray,”he said.
“My colleague dug a hole in the middle of the mosque to plant the IED, while I dug by the side.”
According to the suspect, the explosive devices were connected and timed ahead of the Maghrib prayer.
“As worshippers gathered for Maghrib prayer, after the first raka’at, the bomb detonated. The timer was set for five minutes,”he said, adding that he fled toward the market area shortly afterward.
Security authorities have not yet issued an official statement confirming the full details of the suspect’s confession. Investigations are ongoing.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the official declaration of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the development as a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in Nigeria.
Atiku made the remarks on Wednesday in a statement shared on his verified Facebook handle, where he expressed optimism that Obi’s entry into the ADC would strengthen opposition politics and lay the groundwork for a government capable of delivering prosperity and peace to Nigerians.
“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Atiku said.
The former PDP presidential candidate said he was pleased to officially welcome the former LP presidential candidate Obi into the party, stressing that their collaboration would help foster a “virile opposition” that can effectively challenge the ruling party and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.

Yesufu made the declaration on Wednesday in Enugu, in solidarity with Obi following his defection from the Labour Party to the ADC.
She urged well-meaning Nigerians to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing the need for collective action to rescue the country.
“I have never been a card-carrying member of any political party, but I will be a card-carrying member of the ADC,” she said.
“Enough is enough. There is no more time for tears. We have cried too much.
“From this moment onward, we will fight for Nigeria. We will build a great nation.
“ADC will take Nigeria to a point where the son of a nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody,” Yesufu added.
Bandits have attacked a traditional wedding ceremony in Akunza, a Migili-speaking residential area of Ashige in Lafia local government area of Nasarawa state.
A youth leader in the community, who confirmed the incident, said at least three persons were killed in the attack.
He said several others sustained injuries of varying degrees, adding that women and children were among those injured.
According to him, the injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at a health facility.
He said the attack occurred while wedding festivities were ongoing, throwing the community into panic, adding that residents fled the area for safety as the gunmen opened fire.
“The attack happened during the wedding ceremony and people started running in different directions,” the youth leader said.
The motive for the attack was not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
