The man had transferred a large sum of ₦100,000 into his personal bank account, expecting the full amount to reflect in his balance shortly after the transaction was completed.

However, when he checked his account, he was surprised to discover that the available balance was lower than the amount he had sent, sparking confusion and anger.

The issue was shared on X by the user identified as betsage24, and the post quickly gained attention.

According to him, after carrying out the transfer, he checked his balance and discovered that only ₦63,000 was available.

The huge difference between the transferred amount and what appeared in his account led him to immediately draw public attention to the matter and question what could have caused such a reduction.

December 31 marks not only the eve of a new year, but also the birthday of Dr Dakuku Adolphus Peterside—known as DAP—a public figure whose blend of political instinct and administrative discipline symbolizes leadership in Nigeria: grounded in service, shaped by learning, and focused on results.

At 55, Peterside’s path spans professions and institutions, beginning on December 31, 1970, in Biriye, Opobo Kingdom, in Rivers State—an area marked by both oil wealth and vulnerability. Growing up there posed early questions: What does development mean if the basics are missing? Who is responsible when plenty brings little dignity? Why does potential often end in disappointment?

Those who knew young Peterside recall resolve and curiosity that sought answers beyond the simple. Moving across different Nigerian cities broadened his view. He learned to see the country as a shared project, reinforcing his conviction that national renewal requires both local loyalty and national imagination.

Education shaped Peterside. He finished secondary school at Okrika Grammar School in 1986/87 and studied Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Science and Technology (now Rivers State University), specializing in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. This background built precision, process, and an intolerance for sloppy conclusions—habits that persisted into public life.

He returned to Rivers State University to pursue a Master’s degree in Management and later enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Port Harcourt. Along the way, he broadened his exposure through leadership programmes at institutions including the Harvard Kennedy School, the Kellogg School of Management, the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Stellenbosch Business School, and the Wharton School. In an era when many treat education as a credential rather than a craft, Peterside’s relationship with learning appears different: learning as a tool for clarity, and as a discipline of responsibility—an insistence that leadership should be prepared for, not improvised.

But education alone does not build or reform; it is practice that tests principles—revealed when challenges arise, and power tempts.

Peterside entered the political spotlight between 2002 and 2003 as Chairman of the Opobo–Nkoro Local Government Area during the tenure of Dr Peter Odili as Governor of Rivers State, during which he was recognized for implementing initiatives that improved local administration. Later, between 2005 and 2007, he served as Senior Special Assistant on Works to the Governor, contributing to major state infrastructure projects. From 2007 to 2011, he was Commissioner of Works under Governor Rotimi Amaechi—a role that placed him at the intersection where policy meets potholes and demanded practical delivery. In this capacity, he supervised significant road construction efforts and modernized public works processes. In a country where infrastructure is both a technical challenge and a political metaphor, the Ministry of Works is not merely an office; it is a classroom in which leadership learns either the discipline of systems or the habits of excuses.

From 2011 to 2015, he represented Andoni–Opobo/Nkoro Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives. Observers say he distinguished himself with uncommon insight and courage, sponsoring key motions on revenue allocation and transparency. This period sharpened his profile beyond local politics. His interventions on national questions—especially around revenue, governance, and development—cast him as a politician who spoke from the Niger Delta but refused to be imprisoned by regional sentiment. He carried his constituency with pride, yet framed its struggles within Nigeria’s broader crisis of institutional trust and performance. It is one thing to demand justice for your people; it is another to insist, publicly and consistently, that justice must be built into the architecture of the nation, not negotiated only when passions rise.

It was perhaps unsurprising, then, that in 2016 he was appointed Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), a position he held until 2020. During his tenure, Peterside initiated reforms that streamlined agency operations and enhanced maritime safety standards. Maritime administration is a demanding arena: technically complex, economically strategic, and crowded with competing interests. In such a space, leadership cannot survive on charm alone. It requires systems thinking, stakeholder discipline, and the steady temperament that can absorb pressure without losing direction—qualities that separate reform from performance and seriousness from showmanship.

Commenting on his roles, Dr Eretimi Tonu called Peterside “one of Nigeria’s foremost public intellectuals and political thought leaders,” highlighting his belief that leadership, rooted in responsibility, can redefine Nigeria. Supporters say Peterside sees public office as a trust to be earned.

Engr. Ahmed Ganu argues Peterside’s ideas have enriched public debate and inspired leaders. Ganu notes Peterside remains alert to ordinary Nigerians, advocating for accountable, development-focused governance.

Yet perhaps the most compelling dimension of this portrait is that it does not rely only on offices held. It leans equally on the life of the mind. Peterside has remained, by temperament and habit, a thinker and a writer—one who believes that Nigeria’s troubles are not only political but also intellectual; that a nation fails repeatedly when it stops interrogating itself honestly. A close observer describes his most recent book, Beneath the Surface, as a powerful collection of essays on Nigeria’s political life—candid in diagnosis, solution-oriented in tone—reinforcing his reputation as a voice that seeks to improve the country not by accident but by design.

His commitment goes beyond writing: Peterside mentors younger Nigerians, advises leaders, and coaches executives—quiet acts that help build continuity and national renewal.

At home, Dr Peterside is married to Elima Dakuku, a lawyer, and they have three children. His private life is where values are practiced daily, not in front of microphones but through routine responsibility.

As December 31 returns, the date prompts reflection on what a life represents. DAP’s story shows a leader who believes institutions can work, insists on accountability, and sees transformation as a sustained effort.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, has accused the Federal Government of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to “persecute” him and members of his cabinet for refusing to join the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Mohammed made the allegation, yesterday, while receiving an ambassadorial award for safety from the Institute of Safety Professionals in Nigeria.

Recall that on Tuesday, the EFCC arraigned Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, Yakubu Adamu, over alleged N5.79 billion money laundering.

Adamu is accused of conspiring with Managing Director of I.S. Makayye Investment Resources Limited, Ishaku Mohammed Aliyu, and one Muntaka Duguri, both currently at large, to launder N4.65 billion between June and December 2023.

But Governor Mohammed expressed sadness that despite constitutional immunity, he is being named in the EFCC motion, which targets members of his cabinet.

“As a governor, someone who is the head of the opposition, my commissioner has been kept and will not be released by the EFCC,” he said.

“Even when I have immunity as a governor, my name was stupendously mentioned in a motion in a court of law in Nigeria: me, Bala Mohammed.

“I woke up to a notification where I was told I am being accused of terrorism. I don’t have to say anything. I don’t even have to go to the public court. But certainly, politics has become something in Nigeria.

“The APC-led federal government thinks they can use the courts and institutions of government, like the EFCC, to persecute and prosecute Nigerians who are not within their own party.”

Mohammed, who chairs the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, said he would not bow to pressure allegedly being mounted on him through the prosecution of members of his administration to join the ruling party.

The governor said he had remained silent in the interest of peace and security but warned that he would no longer stay quiet if the federal government continued its actions.

“If they don’t stop, we are going to declare war. I assure you, we are not going to keep quiet any longer. I won’t allow anybody to criminalise me because I’m not in their party, and I refuse to join their party, and I will not join their party,” he said.

The Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has expressed optimism that 2026 will mark a period of renewed hope, institutional stability and steady national progress for Nigeria.

Akpabio noted that while the Executive arm of government continues to implement policies, the National Assembly remains firmly committed to its constitutional responsibilities of lawmaking, representation and oversight to ensure governance outcomes align with the aspirations of citizens.

According to him, the Senate will continue to provide legislative support where necessary, exercise oversight where required, and act in the best interest of national unity, economic stability and social justice.

He expressed cautious optimism that ongoing efforts to address insecurity, economic pressures, infrastructure deficits and youth unemployment would deliver more tangible results in the coming year, stressing that sustainable development depends on strong institutions rather than individual personalities.

“Our democracy is strengthened when institutions function properly and leaders remain accountable. The National Assembly will continue to work to strengthen these institutions and to ensure that public policy is people-centred and forward-looking,” Akpabio stated.

Looking ahead to heightened political activities as the country moves toward the 2027 general elections, the Senate President cautioned against divisive politics and what he described as false messianic narratives that could undermine national cohesion.

He warned that individuals who portray themselves as sole saviours often deepen divisions rather than resolve them, noting that democracy thrives on ideas, responsibility, accountability and respect for national unity.

Akpabio urged political actors to conduct themselves with restraint and a sense of national duty, assuring that the Senate would continue to uphold democratic norms, parliamentary discipline and the rule of law.

He also reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to constructive engagement with the Executive, the Judiciary and other stakeholders to build a more united, just and prosperous Nigeria.

The Presidency has said that only a madman would be comfortable handing over power to the former Anambra state governor and the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 Presidential election, Peter Obi.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said this on Wednesday while responding to Obi’s comments in Enugu, where he officially dumped the LP for the new African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Onanuga on his X handle wrote: “At his event, Obi’s bitterness was evident. What concerned me most were his references to books, professors, and other nations to buttress his belief that he has learnt from the masters and that Nigeria should be entrusted to him because he claims to know the secrets of national development.

“This posturing should be taken with a pinch of salt, coming from a politician who was an abysmal failure in a small state like Anambra, which he governed for 8 years.

“Because Obi sorely lacks the leadership pedigree, beyond being a successful importer, only the madman he consults in Onitsha would be comfortable handing over Nigeria to him.

“However, Obi’s reasoning is flawed. Nations are not identical, and what worked in Indonesia or the USA may not necessarily work in Nigeria.

“No leader can move a country forward by simply copying and pasting models from elsewhere. Nations require original thinkers, not copycats. Homegrown solutions are essential for proper development.

“This is precisely what President Bola Tinubu has been doing since May 29, 2023—a fact that Obi is too consumed by animosity and his small-mindedness to acknowledge.

“In less than three years, the Tinubu administration has restructured the economy, eliminated wasteful petrol subsidies, and reduced its dependence on the oil sector. The administration is focusing on gas development and has attracted both foreign and local investment to the industry.

“Foreign reserves have risen, and the exchange rate has stabilised. Inflation is decelerating. The administration has also embarked on ambitious road projects, such as the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry superhighways, which Obi and his associates consider impossible.

“With tax reforms beginning in January, the Tinubu administration is set to harmonise the historically fragmented tax regime, increase the tax-to-GDP ratio, enhance revenue, and boost prosperity.

“For the past two years and seven months, Tinubu has demonstrated effective leadership anchored in strategic policies and reforms.

Obi is so blind that he cannot see all these achievements, as he jumped from Labour to ADC, where he will play second fiddle and end up being Atiku’s running mate in 2027, like we witnessed in 2019.”

Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following the road accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, which claimed the lives of his two close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Sina Ghami.

In a joint statement issued yesterday by the Lagos State and Ogun State governments, both administrations once again commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and unfortunate.

The statement, signed by Mr Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, and Mr Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Ogun State, prayed that The Almighty grant the repose of the souls of the departed and give their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged from hospital late in the afternoon, though heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends. He was deemed clinically fit to recuperate from home.

The statement further disclosed that Anthony Joshua and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos earlier in the afternoon to pay their final respects to his two departed friends, as preparations were being made for their repatriation scheduled for later in the evening.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dapo Abiodun of Lagos and Ogun states, respectively, expressed deep appreciation for the public concern and the show of love and affection received following the incident.

They also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the fatherly support he provided throughout the process.

Furthermore, they extended appreciation to the team of doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi who attended to Anthony Joshua and others who sustained injuries, noting that the quality of care and professionalism were truly commendable.

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), which has replaced the now-defunct Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has unveiled its institutional brand identity (logo) as part of efforts to reposition the country’s revenue administration structure.

The agency came into operation following the signing of the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act 2025 by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025, marking a major shift in the legal and operational framework governing tax administration in the country.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, the Executive Chairman of the NRS, Zacch Adedeji, said the launch of the logo and accompanying brand elements represents an important milestone in the evolution of Nigeria’s revenue administration framework.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi, quoted him as saying that “the unveiling of the NRS identity reflects a renewed commitment to a more unified, efficient, and service-oriented revenue system, one that is aligned with Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda and global best practices.”

Adedeji noted that the new institutional identity “signals continuity of purpose, strengthened institutional capacity, and a forward-looking approach to supporting taxpayers and national development.”

According to the statement, the NRS sees its renewed identity as part of a broader effort to build confidence and improve engagement with taxpayers across the country. It said, “The Nigeria Revenue Service remains committed to transparency, partnership, and service excellence. The unveiling of this new identity represents not an end, but the beginning of a strengthened relationship between the revenue authority and the Nigerian public — built on trust, clarity, and shared prosperity.”

The leadership of the National Assembly has moved to address growing public concerns over alleged discrepancies between the Votes and Proceedings of the legislature and the gazetted versions of recently passed Tax Acts, directing the Clerk to the National Assembly to release the Bills signed into law by the President for public scrutiny.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday night and signed by the Director of Information, Bulah Audu Bi-Allah, on behalf of the Clerk to the National Assembly, the legislature said the decision followed widespread calls for transparency over the controversial tax reforms.

According to the statement, the transmitted Tax Bills, including the certificate pages bearing presidential assent, will be made available to enable Nigerians to independently review the documents and verify the facts.

“In response to public calls for transparency, the leadership of the National Assembly has directed the Clerk to make available the transmitted Tax Bills duly signed by the President, including the certificate pages,” the statement said, noting that the move would allow the public to independently assess the authenticity of the documents.

The National Assembly disclosed that despite the intense public debate and interest generated by the tax reforms, formal requests for access to the documents had been limited.

“Despite widespread public interest, only a limited number of persons have formally requested Certified True Copies of the harmonised Bills, and all such requests have been processed,” it stated.

It encouraged Nigerians seeking further clarification to follow due process, explaining that interested persons may apply to the Clerk to the National Assembly, specifying the particular Bills required and paying the prescribed fees.

On concerns over the delay in the availability of the gazetted Acts, the statement clarified the roles of the institutions involved.

“The Clerk is also working with the Federal Government Printing Press to publish the duly certified and assented Acts in compliance with the law,” it said, adding that the gazettes are expected to be ready on or before January 1, 2026.

While noting that the Clerk initiates the gazetting process, the National Assembly stressed that the statutory responsibility for printing and publication rests with the Federal Government Printing Press.

The legislature also announced new measures to prevent similar controversies in the future as part of efforts to strengthen institutional processes.

“To strengthen institutional processes, the National Assembly is reviewing procedures for the transmission and gazetting of Bills,” the statement said. “Henceforth, all Bills for presidential assent will be routed through Presidential Liaison Officers, and no request for gazetting an Act of the National Assembly will be entertained by the Printing Press unless initiated by the Clerk to the National Assembly or his authorised representative.”

Reaffirming its commitment to openness and accountability, the National Assembly thanked Nigerians for their engagement, noting that public interest and constructive participation were vital to strengthening transparency, accountability, and professionalism in the legislative process.

The Lagos and Ogun State Governments have confirmed that British heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, has been discharged from hospital following the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, on December 29, 2025.

In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, the two state governments expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased, describing the incident as tragic and painful. They prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and for strength for their families to bear the loss.

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged from hospital late in the afternoon after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recovery from home. It added that the boxer was “heavily hearted and full of emotions” over the loss of his two close friends.

The release further disclosed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos earlier in the day to pay their last respects to the deceased, whose remains were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also appreciated the outpouring of public concern, sympathy and support following the incident.

The governors equally expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for what they described as his “fatherly support” throughout the period following the accident.

The statement also commended the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for their professionalism and quality of care in treating Joshua and others who sustained injuries in the crash.

If confirmed, the deal suggests the Libyan crisis is heading not towards genuine sovereignty, but a frozen conflict managed by external powers. The interests of Libyan leaders themselves, including Haftar, appear to be taking a back seat to the geopolitical calculations of foreign states.

The Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee (NBAA-CC) has warned that unresolved corruption allegations involving lawyers are undermining public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system and weakening the rule of law.

In a New Year message to mark the start of 2026 shared on Wednesday, the committee said that while the NBA recorded progress in institutionalising anti-corruption measures in 2025, prolonged silence and delays around high-profile corruption allegations posed serious risks to accountability and transparency.

The committee’s chairman, Babafemi Badejo, said a major milestone in 2025 was the approval by the NBA National Executive Committee for the establishment of Anti-Corruption Committees at branch levels nationwide.

He said the decentralised structure was intended to strengthen grassroots engagement, localise ethical oversight, and embed anti-corruption vigilance across the legal profession.

Mr Badejo also noted that the observance of World Anti-Corruption Day by several NBA branches in 2025 reflected growing professional commitment to public education and ethical conduct.

Looking ahead, he said the committee would intensify impact-driven interventions in 2026 through strategic partnerships, including collaboration with the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria and engagement with credible civil society organisations to deliver training, public enlightenment, and technical support programmes.

However, Mr Badejo said the committee’s reflections were tempered by deep concern over developments capable of weakening public trust in legal and anti-corruption institutions.

“The protracted and highly publicised corruption cases involving legal practitioners have gone beyond private legal problems into a critical test of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability, transparency and the realisation of the rule of law,” he said.

According to Mr Badejo, prolonged and widely publicised corruption allegations involving lawyers have evolved beyond private legal disputes to become a broader test of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability and the rule of law.

He cited the 2025 case of Tali Shani v.  Mike Ozekhome, which was adjudicated outside Nigeria and involved allegations of forged documents and identity manipulation, raising concerns about implications for Nigeria’s identity management and accountability systems.

Mr Badejo said while the Attorney-General of the Federation’s public announcement of an investigation into the matter was appropriate, but that yhe absence of follow-up communication, interim findings, or a clear timeline for conclusion was “damaging” to public confidence.

He added that such opacity undermined Nigeria’s obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption, particularly provisions on transparency in public administration, civil society participation, and protection for whistleblowers.

The committee disclosed that it formally offered technical assistance to support a credible investigation into the allegations but received no response from relevant authorities, describing the lack of engagement as a missed opportunity to reinforce institutional integrity.

The NBA Anti-Corruption Committee also aligned itself with recent remarks by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on the central role of the rule of law in combating corruption, warning that the rule of law could not be sustained amid systemic corruption.

At the branch level, the committee reported modest progress in 2025. It said the Idemili Branch in Anambra State introduced awards recognising exemplary court registrars, while branches in Kaduna and Barnawa partnered with agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to conduct public sensitisation programmes in English and Hausa.

The Ikorodu Branch was also cited for sustained anti-corruption advocacy.

For 2026, the committee said its priorities would include advocacy for transparent and time-bound investigations into corruption allegations involving legal practitioners, expanded ethics training for lawyers, stronger whistleblower protections, strategic litigation, and sustained policy engagement.

It also urged members of the legal profession to assess aspirants for NBA leadership positions based on integrity, policy clarity, and demonstrable commitment to combating corruption.

Mr Badejo said the committee remained committed to promoting accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct within the legal profession as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s justice system.

Final audio of trader who died in fire accident

A heartbreaking audio of one victim, Nze Obum, emerged online where he made desperate calls for help from under the debris.

Obum, a cloth merchant based in China, had reportedly returned to Nigeria for Christmas to support his wife, who had recently given birth, and sell goods at the market.

The collapse happened as Obum was retrieving remaining stock from his shop behind the plaza.

A trader Zacheaus Afolayan reportedly confirmed Obum’s death, saying his body was released to the family and taken to Anambra State for burial, Linda Ikeji reports.

Afolayan recounted Obum phoned him around 2 a.m. Thursday, trapped and pleading not to be abandoned to die, citing his children’s age. A second, weaker call came later that day.

Obum, visiting Nigeria only during holidays to trade, was helping his wife make sales when disaster struck.

Emergency responders recovered two bodies on Friday, identifying one as Obum.

The fire spread to higher floors and nearby structures, intensifying the chaos.
